I felt a chill run through me. Weicong grabbed his hair, his expression grave. Our efforts, our love for Haohao, seemed to pale in comparison to these comments.
"Did we... did we really do something wrong?" My voice trembled with uncontainable pain, filled with uncertainty. We finally experienced firsthand that the online world is a double-edged mirror; it can reflect the goodness of the human heart but also magnify ignorance, prejudice, and evil.
Weicong tightly held my hand. "No, we did not do anything wrong. We are just doing what we believe is right, fighting for the respect and understanding that Haohao deserves."
But what was even more devastating was yet to come. Someone posted another video after the one of Haohao lying on the ground, and it wasn't one we recorded. It was still Haohao, but from a different angle, portraying him as a completely uncontrollable "little neurotic."
Although the recorder said nothing, the image of Haohao seemingly only knowing how to scream loudly and hit randomly would undoubtedly lead to misunderstandings!
A flood of malicious comments followed. "What autism? Isn't that just mental illness?" "He looks like he's mentally challenged." "He shouldn't be brought out like this; he should be kept at home." "Isn't it embarrassing to take such a child out?" "Are his parents sick too? How could they bring out such a child?" "He won't hurt anyone, right?"...
I bit my lip until it bled, my body trembling uncontrollably! Weicong's veins bulged on his neck as he clenched his fists tightly!
How can there be such malicious and dark-minded people in this world? Haohao is only a five-year-old child; how can they say such inhumane things? Don't they have children? Don't they have sick relatives? Don't they have their own undisclosed issues?
The only thing we can be thankful for is that Haohao won't pick up his phone to watch videos by himself! But for me and Weicong, this situation feels even more devastating than when the doctor announced that Haohao has Autism. We are afraid that the strange looks from others will hurt our son, who doesn't understand anything and has no ability to protect himself!
This incident has made our previously hesitant hearts become resolute. We must do something! The environment where Haohao will live in the future will mainly be our community. As long as the people in the community can gradually understand him, his future life won't be too difficult!
We decided to invite some representative people from the community to our home, allowing them to witness and experience Haohao's uniqueness firsthand. "Do you think they will come?" I asked Weicong anxiously. "I don't know, but we have to try," he replied, though uncertain, his attitude was firm!
In the following days, we visited one family after another, sincerely facing half-open doors and hesitant faces, and in the end, they all nodded! There is one very important person we need to invite first: the director of the Behavioral Development Department, a leading authority on Autism intervention, and also Haohao's attending physician—Dr. Jiang.
To our surprise, as soon as Dr. Jiang heard about what we wanted to do, he immediately agreed. Our family began to get busy. Weicong was organizing promotional materials while I was preparing props for Haohao's performance. I told Haohao that Mom and Dad hope he can express what he wants to say in front of everyone just like he did during kindergarten, using words from animated shows! He seemed to understand a little and nodded his head!
