Since I resigned to accompany him, he seems to have learned to read my expressions. The last thing he wants to see is me crying.
"Haohao, come here to Mommy. Can you sing 'You Look So Good When You Smile' for Mommy? That way, Mommy will be very happy and won't cry!"
I coaxed Haohao, trying to shield him from the influence of those around us. He was indeed focused on making sure I didn't cry, so he found some tissues from who knows where and gently wiped my eyes while softly singing.
"You look so good when you smile, like the flowers in spring..."
His soft and sweet voice, with perfect rhythm and timing, captivated everyone around him.
"I want a toy car, I want a toy car," the voice of Aunt Wang's grandson brought everyone back to reality.
"Haohao, Grandma Wang's little brother is getting ready to go to kindergarten, but is he too young?" I set up the scenario for him.
"You can take care of him," he said in a silly voice mimicking Daddy Pig.
"Are you sure George can go to kindergarten?" he then switched to the voice of Peppa Pig's little girl.
"Yes, he'll adapt," he switched back to Daddy Pig's voice.
"Okay, he can come to kindergarten," he returned to Peppa Pig's voice.
"Hmm hmm, hmm hmm, dinosaur." The not-so-clear voice of George the pig emerged.
Next came Little Lamb Su Xi's soft and delicate voice.
As the story progressed, he flawlessly recited all the lines of the characters from "George's First Day at Kindergarten" (an episode from Peppa Pig), presenting them in the voices of different characters from the cartoon. Although his voice lacked the depth of an adult's, his emotions were perfectly replicated.
One person performing an entire scene.
Everyone couldn't help but applaud, especially those who had watched this cartoon with their children. Their applause was like summer thunder, warm and invigorating.
After consulting with others, we uploaded the complete video of the exchange meeting online.
"Honey, come quick and look!" I called out excitedly, my voice filled with surprise.
On the screen was our uploaded video.
There are scenes of Haohao "talking to himself," as well as moments focused on singing. Below the video, there are hundreds and thousands of comments and likes. Netizens gather their words into streams of warmth that fill our hearts.
"This child performed so wonderfully; his innocent smile has touched me all day!"
"I didn't expect him to have such acting talent at such a young age; his future is limitless!"
"We support you; don't give up because of others' misunderstandings. Haohao is your pride and also ours!"
My heart was instantly filled with warmth, as if a beam of sunlight pierced through the clouds, illuminating our world.
"I've never seen such a moving performance. Although Haohao doesn't look at us, he has grasped the character so well."
"This child is a genius; he has an incredible vocal range!"
Every comment felt like a shot of adrenaline, invigorating our weary bodies and minds. It made us believe that even if the world kisses us with pain, we must respond with song.
"My child is also Autism; you all are doing so great! Learning from you!"
"This child is truly amazing; his memory is astonishing."
"Autism is not scary; what’s scary is our prejudice and misunderstanding."
"Haohao, your parents love you very much; they are always by your side. Keep it up!"
"Haohao, you are the most beautiful flower!"
I tightly held Weicong's hand, filled with gratitude. Sometimes happiness is just a word of encouragement from others! Days passed by, and we worked hard to plant seeds.
"Haohao, what do you want to say? Give..." I held Haohao's hand.
"Excuse me, this is for you," Haohao said seriously to everyone, although his gaze often wandered elsewhere.
We began taking Haohao out more frequently and started taking him on long trips. To ensure Haohao wouldn't be hurt, I prepared hundreds of small cards in advance, on which I wrote:
"My son is on the Autism spectrum, and I apologize for any disturbance he may have caused you! Thank you for your understanding, and may happiness and health always be with you!"
I attached a stress-relief toy in a blind bag to each card!
Every time I took a long-distance bus, I brought Haohao to every seat.
"Haohao, listen to the coach. Look, do it like Mommy!"
I took him to swimming lessons, and fearing he wouldn't follow the coach's instructions, I learned alongside him.
When taking him to intervention classes at the center, I gradually stepped back from the classroom while accompanying him from the very beginning, trying to generalize what I learned from the therapist into our daily life.
We also communicated with more families with Autism.
There were many comments from Autism parents in the video as well.
I realized that many families face even more challenges; some couples have divorced because of it, while others have slowly given up on rehabilitation interventions due to financial pressure. Some children simply cannot be accepted in regular educational environments.
It began to take root.
"I heard Haohao read the text with everyone?"
Some parents from kindergarten actively asked us about Haohao's situation, expressing their desire to help him better.
People in the community took the initiative to greet Haohao while intentionally ignoring his unusual behaviors.
"Haohao, you are amazing!" The first words neighbors often said upon seeing us were directed at Haohao.
Their eyes no longer held doubt or rejection; instead, they reflected appreciation and encouragement.
"There's an art exhibition in the community tomorrow; bring Haohao to take a look; he might be interested!" The community Secretary also called. "Wife, thank you!"
"Honey, thank you too!" We exchanged glances and held hands tighter.
We believe that as long as we don't give up, one day Haohao will find his place in this world where he can shine.
"Mommy, where are we going?" Haohao looked at me, nodding his head.
Haohao no longer only spoke in "cartoon" language.
"To kindergarten, okay?"
"Yeah, to kindergarten, to play with friends, okay?" he responded to me.
"Of course, sweetheart; Mommy and Daddy will go with you." I hugged him tightly, my voice choked with emotion.
