"Don't—" Dai Chun Ni cried and shouted, struggling to break free from the two strong women. She rolled and crawled to Yun Kexin's feet, her head knocking against the ground with a thud. "Seventh Young Lady, I truly have no other intentions. I was just speaking up for my sister and Fifth Young Lady. Please let me off this time. From now on, I will definitely control my mouth, I will change, I will definitely..."
I believe that people can recognize their mistakes and correct them, but I do not believe that a dog can stop eating shit! Yun Kexin coldly stared ahead, unmoved: "Dai Chun Ni, you really are someone who does not do what is right and instead acts like a dog!"
"Substitute Concubine, I cannot make this decision," Yun Kexin said, lowering her head to pick at her nails, concealing the cold smile at the corner of her mouth. "The one who suffered humiliation and almost faced misfortune tonight is Yun Yan, not me. You are asking the wrong person."
Dai Chun Ni crawled towards Yun Yan's feet with an understanding look, knocking her head repeatedly against the ground:
"Fourth Young Lady, please say a word for me. Let the gentlemen and ladies present spare me. I am here to apologize to Fourth Young Lady..." Amidst her pleas for mercy, the Substitute Concubine crawled over to Yun You and Yue Ziyun's feet, saying, "Lord Marquis, Second Madam, I just have a loose tongue; whatever comes to mind I say without malice. Please spare Chun Ni and ask the Lord and Seventh Young Lady for mercy..."
As Dai Chun Ni wailed like a ghost in despair, Yun Kexin looked up at her father and mother. Seeing their complex expressions filled with anger, she thought:
There will come a day when I will make Fu Lianyin crawl like Dai Chun Ni to plead for mercy from her parents!
"Fourth Young Lady, one should spare others when possible," Yun You said to Yun Yan expressionlessly as if Dai Chun Ni were invisible. "Third Uncle, Third Aunt, and Fifth Sister have already come to apologize in person; that is enough."
Yun Yan glanced at Dai Chun Ni and reluctantly nodded.
But Dai Chun Ni still did not dare to get up because the Third Master and Seventh Young Lady had yet to speak; this matter was not over.
She turned her head, her dark face full of creases, looking tearfully at Yun Yang and Yun Kexin, hoping they would speak.
Deep down, she secretly resented herself for miscalculating; she had failed to flatter them and ended up in trouble herself. Fu Lianyin was indeed as she had thought before—at critical moments, either standing by watching or slipping away faster than a rabbit.
"Substitute Concubine, there is one thing I must clarify," Yun Kexin slowly spoke but with a cold tone. "You just said you 'found Fourth Sister in no time.' Do you know how far we ran in the rain? If it weren't for a kind young man who rescued us, Fourth Sister wouldn't even know where she is right now!" Thinking of this made Yun Kexin furious as if a cat were scratching her heart; her voice rose significantly. "Do you know that Yun Ke has fallen ill because of this and cannot participate in the autumn examination?! Our hard work in searching seems so simple when it comes out of your mouth! It was clearly Fifth Sister's foolishness that nearly caused a disaster, yet you are here nonchalantly covering up for her! If I were to slap you a hundred times or splash you with dirt, it would be what you deserve!"
"Yes, yes, yes, Seventh Sister is right," Dai Chun Ni weakly echoed repeatedly. She finally understood Seventh Sister's power and said in shock, "It was all my momentary confusion; I only wanted to protect my sister and Eldest Sister. I didn't want any rift between mothers and daughters or sisters. In my heated state of mind, I said many biased things." Dai Chun Ni paused slightly, casting a sidelong glance at Fu Lianyin and Yun Ran with eyes full of hatred. "Now that I've come to my senses, regarding tonight's incident, Fifth Young Lady indeed cannot escape responsibility; she should kneel down and apologize to Third Young Master and Fourth Young Lady." The last sentence was delivered with a cold smile.
Yun Ran widened her eyes in shock and anger; she had just been helped up by Yun You and hadn't even warmed her feet on the ground yet now had to kneel again—especially in front of the offspring of Second House whom she disliked!
“Substitute Concubine is not bad,” Yun Yang looked at Yun Ran and said indifferently, “Regardless of the cause, Fifth Young Lady, you must pay a price for your recklessness. You cannot let Fourth Young Lady be frightened for nothing, and Yun Ke Ming has also missed the autumn examination…”
Yun Ran sneered. She knew she could not escape this situation tonight. She walked in front of Yun Yan and knelt down, saying, “Fourth Sister, Ran’er kneels here to apologize!” Yun Ran bit out these words through clenched teeth.
“Fifth Sister, you may rise,” Yun Yan turned her head away, unaccustomed to having her peers kneel before her, and said coldly, “It’s all in the past; there’s no need for this—”
“The matter may be in the past, but some people are not done yet,” Fu Lian Yin said with a sly smile as she glanced at Dai Chun Ni, then walked up to Yun Yan and smiled, “Fourth Young Lady, although tonight’s incident was caused by Fifth Young Lady miscommunicating, it was also due to my misunderstanding and well-intentioned meddling. Therefore, I kneel here to apologize to you!”
Fu Lian Yin was about to bend her knee when Yun Yan stepped on Fu Lian Yin's foot and said coldly yet calmly, “Auntie, I have made it clear that the matter is in the past. Do you want me to shorten my lifespan?”
Yun Kexin admired her sister's quick thinking: it was absolutely unheard of for an elder to kneel before a younger person. If Fu Lian Yin knelt down today, she would gain a good reputation while Second House would forever bear the blame of “children without guidance” and “disrespecting their elders.” Their father’s title as Marquis would even be jeopardized!
This Fu Lian Yin was not only cunning but had also become “flexible”! Yun Kexin sneered inwardly.
“Third Sister-in-law, you are being too serious; Fourth Young Lady cannot bear this,” Yue Ziyun coldly interjected, then turned to Yun Yang and said, “Third Brother, we appreciate your and Third Sister-in-law’s concern for Ran’er. Let us keep this quiet; Yun Ke is currently ill and needs peace to recover.”
“In that case, let this matter rest for now,” Yun Yang said. “Second Brother, Second Sister-in-law, Third Brother expresses his gratitude here. We will certainly rectify our family conduct upon returning home to prevent further incidents.” He paused slightly and addressed Fu Lian Yin, Yun Ran, and Dai Chun Ni, saying, “You should thank the Marquis and his wife as well as Fourth Sister… then return to Third House.”
Dai Chun Ni let out a long sigh of relief; she had finally escaped a calamity but still felt dazed.
“Xin’er, don’t go back to Third House tonight; stay here and talk with Fourth Sister,” just before leaving, Yun Yang suddenly stopped and instructed Yun Kexin, “Also help Second Uncle and Auntie take care of your cousin.”
“Yes, Father,” Yun Kexin replied with a grateful smile. “You still have court tomorrow; rest early. I’ll return to Third House early in the morning to see you off.”
Yun Yang patted her head and smiled, “Good girl.”
After the people from Third House left, Yun Kexin followed her parents to Yun Ke's room. Sitting on the edge of the bed, she placed her hand on her brother's forehead and felt the heat radiating from him—he still had a fever, and his face lacked color.
"Xiner, don't worry too much," Yun You said, gently shaking Yun Kexin's shoulder. "He just took the medicine; it won't take effect so quickly. Your uncle needs four hours."
"I understand," Yun Kexin replied without turning around, her eyes fixed on the sleeping Yun Ke. She spoke softly, "I'm just here to keep my cousin company."
"It's late now; everyone should go back to their rooms and rest. In the evening, Ke'er will be looked after by the nanny and the maid," Yue Ziyun said as she took Yun Kexin's hand. "Seventh Young Lady and Fourth Young Lady, come with me."
They went to Yun Yan's chamber, where Yue Ziyun personally made the bed and helped the two children change their clothes before tucking them in.
"Fourth Young Lady, your mother wants to ask you something," Yue Ziyun said, frowning slightly as she lowered her voice. "After dinner, did you really encounter a human trafficker at the night market?"
"I'm not sure," Yun Yan recalled the situation carefully. "I only remember that old woman was quite aged yet still wore makeup, speaking in a strange tone, and there were two fierce-looking men with her."
Yue Ziyun's eyes sparkled as she pondered for a moment before shifting her gaze to Yun Kexin. "Seventh Young Lady, tell Auntie, during dinner, who was sitting closer to you, the Substitute Concubine or your mother?"
"The Substitute Concubine was standing behind me, and my mother was sitting to my right," Yun Kexin answered.
"Since both were so close, why did one hear clearly while the other misheard?" Yue Ziyun murmured to herself, a hint of shadow passing through her narrowed eyes.
