Yun Kexin nestled under the covers, using her body heat to warm Feng Yinxiao. From time to time, she would rub his cold head, face, and limbs. By dusk, she asked Shan Yue to deliver a message to Shanling, telling her to return to Duke's Residence for a while, as she planned to stay at Tian Zhuang for a few days and wanted them not to worry.
When Shanling delivered the message to Third House, Fu Lianyin intended to ask why she suddenly went to stay at Tian Zhuang. However, recalling Yun Kexin's previous "help" and that Yun Yang had mentioned that Seventh Young Lady would stay at Tian Zhuang after turning ten, she decided not to press further and simply told her not to stay too long.
Before dinner that evening, Shan Yue went to the kitchen and cooked with Shanling—rice was already prepared along with several dishes that Shanling had bought on her way to Tian Zhuang.
"Shan Yue, do you really think Seventh Sister can do this?" Shanling asked while washing vegetables. "You and Shining stayed in the room for a few hours; how was it?"
"Seventh Sister seems to have eased up; Young Lord isn't as stiff anymore," Shan Yue replied with a smile. "She lies on him and doesn't feel so cold."
"Hush! Keep your voice down!" Shanling shushed her, placing a finger over her lips. "Why are you speaking so loudly about this?"
"What’s there to be afraid of? There are no outsiders here," Shan Yue stuck out her tongue and laughed. "Shanling, don’t be so nervous."
"Nervous?" Shanling pointed at herself in mock disbelief. "You don’t know how annoying Ma Minghao is; he keeps pestering me with questions." Suddenly, her face flushed as she whispered, "I’m really afraid I’ll crack under pressure and spill everything."
"Brother Ma is just concerned about Young Lord; you can just 'comfort' him," Shan Yue chuckled. "Just hold on a little longer; Seventh Sister is going to give Young Lord a massage tonight. He should be fine soon."
Shanling nodded but then frowned again. "Shan Yue, do you think Seventh Sister is being too foolish? What she’s doing is ruining her reputation; how will she ever get married in the future…"
Shan Yue mischievously replied, "If Young Lord finds out, he will definitely marry her; I believe that."
"It's not that I don't believe Young Lord; I don't trust this world." Shanling's expression darkened as she spoke gravely. "'Good people are often taken advantage of. Good horses are often ridden.' Isn’t Young Lord just like that? I'm just afraid that between them… good things take time." She sighed after finishing her last sentence.
"Regardless, Seventh Sister is doing this to save Young Lord. We should be grateful to her," Shan Yue insisted. "Even if Young Lord truly changes his heart later or if circumstances change, I will always stand by Seventh Sister; I like having such a master."
Shanling smiled faintly and nodded. "Come on, let’s bring the food to Seventh Sister; she hasn’t eaten anything at all. She only drinks water every time."
At the door, Ma Minghao was still waiting—he had promised Shanling. He couldn't barge in while she was away.
"Shanling, Shan Yue, why won't you let me in?" Ma Minghao asked, eager yet maintaining his gentlemanly demeanor. "It's useless just standing here; what happened to the Young Lord? I'm really about to go crazy."
"Brother Ma, every time Shan Yue comes out of the room, she tells you about the Young Lord's condition," Shanling said with a feigned angry expression. "Why are you so anxious? You can't go in yet."
"But that's only what you say," Ma Minghao replied impatiently. "I can't feel at ease unless I see him myself."
"Don't you trust us?" Shanling shot him a sharp look. "Brother Ma, you've been with the Young Lord; you should understand that the most important rule for a guard is obedience!"
"No, I just want to take a look," Ma Minghao said helplessly. "When can I go in?"
"Seventh Sister will be done by noon tomorrow," Shan Yue interjected, noticing the rising tension between Shanling and Ma Minghao. "As soon as she is finished, we will let you in," she paused and added patiently, "Brother Ma, it's not that we are doing this on purpose; there are indeed some inconveniences. Please wait just one more night. How about having a meal first? You've been standing here for a while..."
Listening to their words, Ma Minghao softened from his initial firmness and gave a verbal assurance, thus he stopped pressing them and went along with the girls.
Shanling remained outside while Shan Yue entered the inner room with a food box.
"Sister, it's time to eat," Shining approached the bed and said to Yun Kexin. "You haven't eaten anything."
"It's fine, I'm not hungry," Yun Kexin replied with her brows still furrowed. "You all eat first."
"Not hungry?" Shan Yue disagreed. "Sister, whether you are or not, you still need to give the Young Lord a massage later. That requires energy, and you'll have to stay up all night; how can that work?!"
Yun Kexin stubbornly insisted, "I really don't have an appetite." She turned her face away, her hands folded over Feng Yinxiao's chest as she gazed at his pale yet slightly flushed handsome face. She smiled faintly, "This method really works; I can feel the blood flowing through his veins, and his heartbeat is clearer and steadier than this morning."
"Sister, is this true?" Shining whispered excitedly, unable to resist leaning toward the bed to take a closer look at the still unconscious Feng Yinxiao. She smiled and said, "It's much better than when we just brought him back yesterday. At least his face isn't deathly pale anymore."
"And Young Lord's hand, you should feel it too," Yun Kexin said, suppressing her trembling body. "And also his breathing, check that as well."
"I'll do it," Shan Yue said as she took hold of Feng Yinxiao's hand that was exposed outside the blanket. After holding it for a while, she placed her hand under his straightened nose to test it and nodded repeatedly. "His breathing is clearer and deeper than yesterday."
"This is wonderful," Shining said cautiously, controlling her volume as she smiled. "I believe that after Sister finishes massaging Young Lord, he will wake up soon and be saved."
"Sister, I beg you again to get out of bed and eat something," Shan Yue said to Yun Kexin with more empathy. "A person is made of iron, and food is steel. With strength, we can save others better, right?"
"You don't understand," Yun Kexin explained calmly. "It's so hard to warm up the bed now. If I leave to eat, it might cool down again, and I worry all my efforts will be in vain—"
"So Seventh Sister means..."
"Let me hold him for a while longer. When I feel his heartbeat return to normal and his body temperature noticeably rise," Yun Kexin finished in one breath. She initially intended to stop speaking but saw that the two maidens still looked unconvinced, so she promised, "How about this? I'll eat something before I get out of bed to massage Young Lord."
Only then did Shan Yue smile brightly and say, "Alright, then I'll wait by the table with Shining Sister for you. Call us if you need anything."
As she finished speaking and pulled Shining to leave, Yun Kexin called out to them: "Wait a moment, Shining, Shan Yue. Give Young Lord some warm water; he can't swallow food and can only drink water."
Shining and Shan Yue responded and went off to follow Yun Kexin's instructions to feed Feng Yinxiao some water before returning to the table to eat something simple while keeping an eye on the situation by the bed.
During the night, Yun Kexin felt Feng Yinxiao's heartbeat was slightly faster than before, and his body was warming up as well. She touched his forehead, cheeks, neck, shoulders, arms, and palms in turn before bringing her lips close to his nose, feeling a faint yet warm breath brushing against her face. Yun Kexin felt it was time—by now it was already four o'clock in the morning and dawn was breaking.
"Shining, Shan Yue, help me move the clothes and screen over here and place them in front of the bed," Yun Kexin turned her face toward the two waiting by the table and whispered her instructions. "Then wait outside the screen."
"Yes, Sister..." The two maidens moved the screen from against the wall and hung Yun Kexin's clothes on it before standing in the middle on the other side of the screen.
Yun Kexin gently got out of bed, took off her clothes, and quickly put on her outfit. Only at that moment did she feel shy, fearing that Feng Yinxiao might suddenly wake up, which would be too awkward. Fortunately, nothing happened; he remained with his eyes closed, lying quietly.
Yun Kexin walked out from behind the screen and hurriedly ate a few bites of the food Shan Yue had just warmed up. Then she went around the screen and pushed Feng Yinxiao back into bed. She sat outside and said, "Shining, Shan Yue, I'm about to start. Don't come over; I'll call you if I need help." "Yes, sister," the two maidservants replied in unison from outside the screen.
Yun Kexin first placed her hands near her mouth to take a breath, then placed them side by side on Feng Yinxiao's broad chest and began to massage him vigorously from top to bottom. She tirelessly worked from his shoulder blades to his neck, then from his chest to his abdomen, varying her strength until Feng Yinxiao's upper body turned completely red. She then shifted to his arms and back, grabbing, pinching, kneading, rubbing... Finally, her hands felt as if they were on fire with soreness and fatigue before she paused for a moment to catch her breath, wiped the sweat from her forehead, and continued massaging his legs and feet.
"Uh—" The burning sensation and dull pain in his body finally brought some awareness to the unconscious Feng Yinxiao as he tilted his head slightly and let out a soft hum.
Yun Kexin was startled but did not pull back her hands. Seeing that he was feeling pain brought a comforting smile to her face as she gently "exerted power" with her soft hands on Feng Yinxiao's body, just easing up on the pressure because she could feel the heat in her palms—his body temperature was slowly rising. Soon enough, his breathing became heavier...
After resting for a moment, Yun Kexin exerted great effort to change Feng Yinxiao into clean clothes—a brand new robe that she had asked Ma Minghao to buy in the morning, which Shining had brought into the bedroom.
When she got out of bed, she realized that massaging was no trivial matter; it was truly a "physical job." She had never felt this exhausted in her life. The benefit was that due to their "union," the coldness that had filled her body inside and out was gradually dispelled by the massage. She felt hot and warm. (To be continued)
