Traveling with Yuan Mingyi and Tian Yanran was quite easy; both had high Combat Power, making it effortless to deal with the slow-moving low-level zombies. The three of them almost crushed everything in their path. By the fifth stop, Yuan Mingyi awakened his Earth-type ability, and by the eighth, Tian Yanran awakened her Ice-type ability. Bai Tang envied them; her system had not fully rebooted, and her semi-digitalized body could not be transformed into an ability user like the others. However, Bai Tang slightly revealed her backpack, claiming she possessed spatial abilities. Upon learning this, Yuan Mingyi and Tian Yanran were overjoyed and entrusted all their belongings to Bai Tang for safekeeping, allowing them to travel light.
"The car is almost out of gas; we need to find a gas station," Yuan Mingyi said to the other two after checking the fuel gauge. His vehicle was a Land Cruiser; although it was sturdy, it consumed a lot of fuel. The gasoline they had collected along the way was nearly depleted, and if they couldn't find a gas station soon, they would have to abandon the Cruiser and rely on public transport.
"Let me take a look!" Tian Yanran pulled out a map and began to study it. "There's a town ten kilometers west; let's go there to find a gas station!"
The navigation system had malfunctioned, and the map wasn't as detailed as an online search engine. Fortunately, both Yuan Mingyi and Tian Yanran had good directional sense and could read maps, preventing them from going off course—relying on Bai Tang would have been disastrous since she had a slight tendency to get lost.
After driving for about twenty minutes, they spotted the tallest building in the town. Instead of entering the town, Yuan Mingyi circled around outside. A few scattered zombies caught the scent of living humans and chased after the car. Tian Yanran leaned out of the window with her long gun, taking them out one by one.
"There's a gas station over there!" Bai Tang pointed to the right, alerting Yuan Mingyi.
Yuan Mingyi directed the car toward the gas station. Outside, numerous vehicles blocked the road; Bai Tang's backpack proved useful as she effortlessly moved the obstructing cars aside into a nearby field. The Cruiser was able to enter the gas station smoothly.
"Something feels off!" Bai Tang stopped the other two from getting out of the car.
"What feels off?" Yuan Mingyi had already unbuckled his seatbelt and turned around in confusion.
"It's too quiet!" Bai Tang said warily as she stared at a building inside the gas station where heavy breathing could be heard, suggesting someone was severely injured. Aside from that sound, everything else inside was eerily silent, but Bai Tang sensed an extremely terrifying presence lurking within that sent chills down her spine.
"Everyone must have run away; naturally, it's quiet!" Yuan Mingyi said dismissively but remained alert. Throughout their journey, Bai Tang's instincts had helped them avoid danger several times.
"If people ran away, what about zombies? There isn't even a single zombie in this gas station; that's too abnormal!" Bai Tang got out of the car and took out her sword from her backpack, gripping it tightly.
Yuan Mingyi and Tian Yanran also noticed something unusual at the gas station. They both tightly gripped their weapons and got out of the car, leaning against the trunk.
"What do we do now?" Yuan Mingyi asked.
Bai Tang stared intently at the house. "You two go refuel the car. I'll check inside the house!"
If there were any dangerous things inside, they must be eliminated to prevent future victims from falling into their traps.
Just as Yuan Mingyi agreed, a sudden rush of foul wind hit him. Startled, he quickly dodged, managing to avoid a fatal blow to his throat, but his face was slashed with a long and deep cut, black blood oozing from the wound.
Such speed! Both Yuan Mingyi and Tian Yanran were terrified. With such speed, they couldn't possibly react in time! Tian Yanran fired a shot, but missed the enemy's clothing. The suddenly appearing Zombie evaded Tian Yanran's attack, lunging forward and grabbing her, pulling her back toward the house.
"Yanran!" Yuan Mingyi felt both heartbroken and anxious. Ignoring his injury, he rushed after them. Unfortunately, his speed was no match for the Zombie; by the time he had run halfway, the Zombie had already taken Tian Yanran back into the house.
Bai Tang hurried after him. The scene she had just witnessed distracted her, reminding her of a moment in Yi Tu Long where Wei Yixiao captured an Emei Disciple to drain her blood. Wait, Tian Yanran was also an Emei Disciple!
Seeing Yuan Mingyi recklessly about to charge into the house, Bai Tang grabbed him. "Wait!"
Yuan Mingyi shook off Bai Tang's hand. "If we wait any longer, Yanran will be in danger!"
"If you charge in like this, not only will you not save Tian Yanran, but you'll also lose your life," Bai Tang said coldly. "There are two breathing sounds inside; Tian Yanran is still alive!"
"Since Yanran is still alive, we need to hurry in and save her!" Yuan Mingyi was frantic with worry.
"I'll go in first, follow closely behind me!"
Bai Tang opened the door, and her Longsword immediately thrust forward. A piercing scream echoed as Bai Tang felt the sword pierce flesh and encounter resistance. With a horizontal slash, an arm along with its shoulder was severed and flew away.
The injury triggered the Zombie's ferocity, causing it to recklessly lunge at Bai Tang, its foul mouth filled with sharp fangs aimed at her throat. This was exactly what Bai Tang wanted; she raised her left hand to block her throat, allowing the Zombie to bite into her arm while her right hand swung the Longsword towards the Zombie's neck. With a crunching sound, the Zombie's head fell to the ground.
"Watch out!" Yuan Mingyi called out, and Bai Tang hurriedly retreated, only to discover that there was more than one Zombie inside the room, including a baby-like Zombie. The speed of this smaller Zombie was even faster than that of the larger one, and in an instant, Bai Tang had several new wounds on her body.
"Earth Spike!" Yuan Mingyi activated his Ability, causing numerous spikes to erupt from the ground, trapping the Zombie within a two-meter circle. However, the Zombie was not only fast but also had astonishing jumping ability; it kicked off the ground and attempted to leap out of the spike circle. Bai Tang swept her Longsword to block the Zombie's movement from above while Yuan Mingyi launched another set of spikes from below. The Zombie let out a shriek and suddenly jumped up, breaking through Bai Tang's blockade, its sharp claws reaching for her face.
Bai Tang quickly dodged; she did not want to be disfigured. Taking advantage of this moment, the Zombie lunged at Bai Tang and bit down on her throat. Bai Tang felt a sharp pain as a chunk of flesh was bitten off. Fortunately, she reacted quickly enough that her throat wasn't completely severed. She wrapped her arms around the Zombie tightly against her chest, and Yuan Mingyi quickly handed her a sword, which she used to decapitate the Zombie.
Bai Tang sighed in relief, loosening her grip and letting the Zombie's body fall to the ground. She stepped back and leaned against the wall to rest. This battle had been extremely perilous; if she had been careless for even a moment, her life could have been lost.
