People in City D are luckier than those in other parts of the country by several times, and the Bai Family is even luckier than the people of City D. Bai Tang is both an Elixir and a Gene Enhancer, nourishing them, making their bodies incredibly strong. When the apocalypse broke out, they were all at home, and after waking from a coma, each of them awakened their Ability. Bai Dad awakened the Wood Element Ability, Bai Ma awakened a water-based Ability, Wu Xuemei awakened a soil-based Ability, while Xing Xiaokang also awakened a soil-based ability like her mother. Only Ai Wanxi awakened a strong offensive Fire Elemental Ability, but due to his age, his Ability was low, and he could only produce small flames to ignite wood. However, this was still very useful; in the early days of the apocalypse, their combined Abilities helped them greatly. When the water supply was cut off, Bai Ma used her water-based Ability to condense enough water for everyone to drink; when there were no vegetables or fruits, Bai Dad could stimulate growth, with Wu Xuemei assisting.
In the initial days of the apocalypse, the Bai Family dared not leave their house due to the terrifying flesh-eating Zombies. It wasn't until a week later that they slowly overcame their fear and ventured out to fight the monsters. By this time, the military had already entered the city, and Bai Dad and Wu Xuemei acted alongside the soldiers. During his time with Lin Wenbin, Bai Dad had become skilled in martial arts and could eliminate a single Zombie with one strike; while learning martial arts from him, Wu Xuemei also used her Ability to kill enemies. After a month, her growth in Ability was the fastest, successfully transforming from an ordinary housewife into a strong and powerful Ability warrior.
Due to minimal destruction in City D, supplies were not an issue. The government encouraged citizens to kill Zombies, exchanging their kills for supplies.
"Many people are afraid to kill Zombies. However, the government provides jobs so that everyone can work hard for rewards. Although the amount earned is not much, it is barely enough for one person to get by," Wu Xuemei explained to Bai Tang about the current situation in City D. "After the apocalypse, many industries collapsed while others began to rise. The most sought-after jobs turned out to be farmers and workers; of course, doctors and researchers are also in demand. Many former big bosses and white-collar workers can now only repair city walls!"
"The sudden drop in temperature caused many people to freeze to death. The government immediately organized everyone to make winter clothing, which saved most lives. Tang Tang, the jade ornaments you gave us are truly wonderful; they can resist the cold. If it weren't for those pieces of jade you gifted us, Kang and Xi would probably have suffered greatly; now they haven't even gotten sick—all thanks to you!" said Wu Xuemei happily. After experiencing all the disasters of the apocalypse, being able to reunite as a family was the happiest thing.
"Of course! Those pieces of jade are not ordinary jade; they are called Warm Jade, which can regulate body temperature when worn," said Bai Tang proudly. "Fortunately, I had foresight and gave each of you one."
"Yes, yes! You do have foresight," agreed Bai Ma joyfully. "But I’m not bad either; I hoarded several boxes of instant noodles! Otherwise, we would have starved."
At the beginning of the apocalypse, the Bai Family, fearing flesh-eating Zombies, did not dare to go outside. They relied on leftover food from their refrigerator and two boxes of instant noodles that Bai Ma had previously bought at the supermarket to fill their stomachs and survive through the initial panic.
"Yes, yes! Thanks to you, Mom! The instant noodles you bought helped not only our family but also helped out with Ling Xin and them," said Bai Tang, nodding vigorously.
"Right! You came back from Magic City. How are Ling Xin and them?" asked Bai Ma.
"They should be fine!" replied Bai Tang. "I rushed back to find you all and gave them some dissolved medicine made from a Peiyuan Pill, along with plenty of food. They won't turn into Zombies, and if they ration their food carefully, it should last them two or three days. By then, they should have escaped the city!"
"You've been heading home since the beginning of the apocalypse; how come it took over a month for you to return?" asked an astonished Bai Ma. "Don't you have the skill of Swift Travel? Why didn't you use it?"
Bai Tang frowned: "The system was affected by the erosion of the Zombie Virus, causing it to restart automatically. Besides using my backpack, I couldn't use any other skills or functions."
"Poor girl! You must have suffered quite a bit this past month!" said a concerned Bai Ma. The child had risked everything just to come back because she worried about her parents. "I'll go make you a bowl of instant noodles!"
"Mom, no need! I'm not hungry!" Bai Tang stopped Bai Ma, "And I haven't suffered at all. Really, except for traveling and killing Zombies, I've been eating and sleeping well the whole way, no hardship."
"Huh, how could you not suffer while rushing through such heavy snow? Look at you, your face has gotten thinner!"
"Really? I don't feel that way," Bai Tang touched his face, "I feel like nothing has changed! Mei Mei, have I really lost weight?"
"You have!" Wu Xuemei nodded seriously.
"It shouldn't be! How could I possibly lose weight!"
"It's definitely from being hungry."
"I wasn't hungry at all! Not to mention I already had a lot of food packed in my backpack, along the way, my companions and I also found plenty to eat."
"Really not hungry?"
"Not at all!" Bai Tang nodded and took out food from his backpack: noodles, flour, rice, various vegetables and meats.
"This is meat from a mutated cow; it doesn't differ much from regular beef," Bai Tang held up a piece of bright red meat to introduce to his family, "And it contains a little energy inside, which is good for the body when eaten!"
"Can we eat meat from Mutated Animals? Is it poisonous?" Bai Dad asked.
"We can eat it! I guarantee it's non-toxic!"
Bai Dad slapped his thigh: "As long as we can eat it! I'll go tell Zhang the Squad Leader right now!" With that, he stood up and ran out of the house before Bai Tang could respond.
Bai Tang blinked in confusion: "What's going on?"
Bai Ma explained to her daughter, "Zhang the Squad Leader's unit is stationed just outside our district. Your dad often follows Zhang the Squad Leader's team on missions and is quite familiar with them. Now that you've mentioned such important news, your dad naturally wants to hurry and inform him. You know, the soldiers haven't had enough to eat for a long time."
"Isn't there enough food in City D?" Bai Tang asked.
"City D has a decent stockpile of supplies, but there are also many survivors, so there's not much for each person. Especially since the heavy snow came so suddenly, many crops have been frozen to death. The base has restricted the amount of supplies distributed, and the soldiers can only eat about one-sixth of what they used to," Wu Xuemei explained, as she had the most contact with the military aside from Bai Dad.
"Doesn't the government have enough food reserves for survivors to last two or three years? Do they really need to be this frugal? Once the snow melts, can't we just replant crops?"
"You need to relax!" Bai Ma sighed. "Who knows when this snow will melt! And even if it does melt, there's no guarantee that the land won't be contaminated. The Zombie Virus can turn people into Zombies; who knows what it will do to the land? If any crops grown in contaminated soil contain the Zombie Virus, then anyone eating them would turn into a Zombie!"
"That shouldn't happen, right?" Bai Tang said. "Even if there is Zombie Virus, it should be very little, right? The people who are still alive must have antibodies in their bodies; eating a bit of virus shouldn't cause any problems."
"That's a naive assumption!" Wu Xuemei replied. "What if someone eats food produced from contaminated land and turns into a Zombie? We can't take that risk!"
"Then we can only find a way to solve the Zombie Virus!"
"You think you can handle it? The government has already gathered scientists to research it, and there are scientists working on Soilless Cultivation Technology! However, we in City D simply don't have any talent in this area; we can only hope that scientists from other bases figure it out and let us know."
"The challenges humanity will face in the future will become increasingly severe!" Bai Tang shared her thoughts after much contemplation. "Mom, once the system reboot is complete, I'll take you all to live in Red Mansion World! This world is too dangerous; I can't rest easy with you here. I've already dealt with the Big Ass Police Fairy in Red Mansion World. Although there’s no water or electricity which might be uncomfortable at first, it's safe and has a good environment. I'll buy you a big Zhuangzi so you can enjoy an ancient pastoral life."
"Go to Red Mansion World?" Bai Ma was tempted. The arrival of the apocalypse and the rampant Zombies had terrified her. Although she had adjusted her mindset afterward, she preferred a simple yet safe life over one filled with anxiety.
"We're all going?" Wu Xuemei was no longer afraid of Zombies after killing many of them, but she had to consider her son. In such an apocalypse, how could she ensure her child's survival?
"Yes. I'll take you back and then come back!" Bai Tang nodded.
Bai Ma was startled and grabbed her daughter's hand tightly. "It's so dangerous here; why would you want to come back?"
Bai Tang patted Bai Ma's hand for comfort and said, "Mom, don't worry. After the system restarts, I will have powerful skills. How can I be afraid of these Zombies? Since I have the ability, I naturally want to come back and help everyone. I hope that my efforts can save more people!"
"In that case, we won't leave either. We'll stay in this world with you and help you save people," Bai Ma replied.
"No!" Bai Tang quickly shook her head in refusal. "You don't have much ability. Staying here will only make me worry. It's better for you to go over there so that I have fewer concerns."
"But..." Bai Ma wanted to say something but was interrupted by Bai Tang. "Mom, you don't want me to get hurt because I'm distracted taking care of you, do you?"
What else could she say? Although Bai Ma was worried about her daughter, she knew that once her daughter made up her mind, there was nothing she could do to change it. Moreover, her daughter was doing this to help more people; how could a mother stop her?
"Do as you wish! Just remember not to get hurt!" Bai Ma sighed.
Bai Tang's eyes turned into crescent moons as she smiled. "Mom, don't you trust your daughter's abilities? It's only me who gets to bully the Zombies. How could any Zombie hurt me?"
Bai Ma replied irritably, "Don't be so stubborn! Your system is unreliable; who knows when it will malfunction again!"
Bai Tang paused for a moment before chuckling, "The system restart was just an accident because of the Zombie Virus invasion! Look at how even the grand Earth has faced the apocalypse because of the Zombie Virus. It's normal for the system to be down for a while!"
"You're just talking nonsense!"
After being out for half an hour, Bai Dad returned with a young man in military uniform around thirty years old following him. Looking at the insignia on his shoulder, Bai Tang realized he was the Zhang the Squad Leader mentioned by Bai Dad. Zhang the Squad Leader came to thank Bai Tang and confirm which Mutated Animals were edible and which were not.
"Except for originally venomous creatures like Venomous Snakes, Poisonous Scorpions, and spiders, most Mutated Animals are edible," Bai Tang said. She had a good impression of Zhang the Squad Leader. He was a soldier worthy of respect. Bai Tang held all soldiers in high regard; they stepped forward in times of crisis to rescue ordinary people from the clutches of Zombies, risking their own safety without time to worry about their families at home. They were ordinary yet extraordinary.
"That's great! With the Mutated Animals, the soldiers will be able to eat their fill!" Zhang the Squad Leader happily thanked Bai Tang. If the soldiers couldn't even eat enough, how could they kill Zombies and protect the public? This news from Bai Tang solved a major problem for them. There were large breeding farms around City D, and Zhang the Squad Leader decided to report to his superiors immediately and go to the breeding farm early tomorrow morning to gather some Mutated Animals, keeping part for breeding and giving part to the soldiers as extra rations.
"When you go to the breeding farm, be careful. Not all animals will turn into Mutated Animals. Some may turn into Zombie animals. The threat from Zombie animals is greater than that of regular Zombies of the same level!"
"Thank you for the reminder!" Zhang the Squad Leader said gratefully.
After sending off Zhang the Squad Leader, Bai Tang informed Bai Dad about the decision to send the Bai Family to the Red Mansion World. Bai Dad frowned, believing that going to the Red Mansion World was akin to being a deserter. Thousands of Huaxia compatriots were living in danger; how could he leave like a coward? Even if he couldn't help everyone, he should stay and share their hardships!
In the end, it was still Bai Tang's words that convinced Bai Dad.
"I will take on your share as your daughter! If you and Mom are safe, I can focus on saving more people!"
"Then it's settled!" Bai Dad sighed. "But with Earth in such a state, what can you do to restore it to its former condition?"
"It's impossible to restore it completely, but I want to help the government adapt to the current state of Earth as much as possible. If they can't adapt, then they should leave Earth!"
"Leave Earth? Do you want everyone to immigrate to Blue Star?" Bai Dad asked in surprise.
"That's the last resort. If possible, I don't want everyone to leave Earth. There are Tuzhu on Blue Star, and without high technology as support, Earth won't be able to compete with Blue Star and Tuzhu," Bai Tang said. "Once I stabilize things for you, I will go to the Future World and bring back some technologies that can be analyzed with current Earth technology. Yes, if Ability Users evolve further, they should be able to pilot at least the lowest level of Mecha."
Bai Dad's eyes sparkled: "Tang Tang, if my Ability becomes stronger, can I also pilot a Mecha?"
"Theoretically yes! But we can't overlook the need for physical strength training," Bai Tang replied, puzzled. Did Bai Dad want to conquer the entire Red Mansion World with Mecha?
