The four mercenaries were bold and ruthless. Driven by hatred, they even intended to harm the one or two-year-old child of the Yi Family. The cruel coldness of their actions was unbearable even for Zhuang Nianchen, who had a grudge against the Yi Family, let alone for Yi Qian, who shared their bloodline. Seeing the terrified expressions on the children's faces, the young man could no longer hold back. Although he resented Yi Lao San and the so-called grandfather and Uncle, he did not harbor hatred for the other members of the Yi Family. These children were innocent; if they wanted revenge, they should go after the real culprits instead of targeting children.
The young man bit his lower lip until it bled as he watched a child about to fall into the jaws of a zombie. He could no longer restrain himself and was about to rush down.
Bai Tang grabbed him and said, "Wait here, I'll go!"
With that, Bai Tang disappeared before their eyes. No one could see her movements clearly as she swiftly grabbed several children and tossed them beside Yi Qian. In total, there were six children; the oldest was only six years old, while the youngest was just over one. Holding a one-year-old baby and facing several pairs of confused and terrified eyes, the young man felt helpless and looked to his uncle for assistance.
Zhuang Nianchen was equally at a loss; having never been married, how would he know how to take care of children?
Thus, both of their equally bewildered faces turned towards Bai Tang.
Bai Tang scratched her head; she hadn't thought much while saving them, but after realizing these children were a handful, she thought to herself: protecting their safety—sure, she could do that—but taking care of them? No way!
"I have a friend in the martial arts world; their sect is located in Dongshan within City D. It should be relatively safe there. We can send these kids to them." After all, Dongshan Sect already had a baby; adding a few more children shouldn't be too much trouble!
"Wait? Is there still a martial arts world in this era?" Zhuang Nianchen asked in surprise.
Bai Tang smiled: "This world is vast. Alright, you two take care of these kids first; I’ll go get a vehicle!"
The Yi Family had plenty of good cars, but Bai Tang chose a utility vehicle parked outside the kitchen instead of one of those luxury sports cars worth millions. She moved all the ingredients from the kitchen into the back of the vehicle as gifts for Dongshan Sect and living expenses for the children. The Yi Family's kitchen catered to hundreds of people, so there was an abundance of food stored there. Bai Tang only took a quarter of it, filling up the cargo area completely and stuffing over ten bags of flour and rice under the seats in the passenger area. Just when it seemed there was no more space left, she waved her hand and stored the remaining food in her spatial pocket.
The four mercenaries were also scavenging resources; with their numbers, each drove a large cargo truck and had already taken half of what was in the Yi Family's warehouse. While their actions could be understood given their circumstances, their methods were excessive and their personalities cruel and twisted. Bai Tang did not want to see them any longer; taking advantage of their distraction while they continued to gather supplies, she drove away from the Yi Family base in her utility vehicle.
In order to reach City D quickly, Bai Tang drove at high speed. The young man and several children looked at her with shining eyes full of admiration. They stopped to dig for Crystal Cores when they arrived at City D; this delay cost them some time but they eventually made it there without further issues. The utility vehicle couldn’t go deep into the mountains, so when Bai Tang waved her hand to store it in her backpack, Zhuang Nianchen was left stunned. The woman before him seemed to move like a deity.
Bai Tang carried one child each while Zhuang Nianchen took another; three other children aged five to seven followed closely beside them. The mountain path was difficult to navigate, but none of the three children complained. Despite their young age, previous experiences had taught them that they were no longer pampered like little emperors; monsters roamed this world that had devoured their parents and grandparents. If it weren't for Sister Tang Tang saving them, they too would have been eaten by those monsters. Throughout their journey, Sister Tang Tang protected them; they needed to behave well and absolutely could not let her feel they were burdensome or she might abandon them to be eaten by monsters.
"Bai Tang?" Yuan Mingyi exclaimed upon seeing Bai Tang at Dongshan Sect's base. "Didn’t you leave City D? Why are you back? Where are your uncle and aunt?"
The Dongshan Sect is protected by a formation, and since it is located deep in the mountains with almost no human presence, there is no threat from Zombies. Aside from the occasional mutated animals and plants, it is very safe here.
"My parents are doing well; they are in a safe place. I came this time to deliver disciples to your sect!"
Yuan Mingyi saw a few young children and nearly dropped his jaw. "You... are you treating this place like a kindergarten?"
"Since you've already taken one in, what's a few more?"
"What do you mean 'what's a few more'? Do you know how difficult it is to take care of children?" Yuan Mingyi had been a caretaker for some time and knew well how troublesome kids could be.
"It's not like you're the one taking care of them! Don't you have several women in your sect?" Bai Tang rolled his eyes. "Besides, I'm bringing you a legacy; you should be grateful and accept them!"
"Ha! You're taking advantage and acting all innocent!"
"Heh, then you can choose not to accept these kids!"
"Get lost! Are we that heartless? The outside world is so chaotic; if we don't take these children in, are we just sending them out to die?" So, despite his tough words, Yuan Mingyi had a soft heart.
Bai Tang genuinely laughed and waved his hand, causing a cargo truck to appear in the open space.
"The supplies in the back of the truck can be considered as the children's food expenses!"
Looking at the bags of rice, flour, and potatoes inside the truck, Yuan Mingyi's eyes widened.
"Did you rob a grain depot?"
"No, I just happened to come across a base that was occupied by Zombies. I was worried that the supplies inside would go to waste, so I took them. All of it is for you, Dongshan Sect!"
"Thank you!" Yuan Mingyi said gratefully. What is the most precious thing in the apocalypse? It's resources! With so many supplies, the Dongshan Sect can last for two or three months.
"I should be the one thanking you. Thank you for helping me take care of these troublesome kids," Bai Tang said. "These children are very well-behaved, especially the three older ones. Having experienced the scene of zombies ravaging and killing their loved ones, they feel very insecure and are so sensible that it breaks my heart! They won't require much effort from you."
"They are now disciples of our Dongshan Sect; how could we not take care of them?" Yuan Mingyi replied. "At six or seven years old, it's the foundational age; I hope they can endure hardships!"
"They definitely can! They walked all the way into the mountains by themselves. They were exhausted, but none of them complained; they gritted their teeth and made it here."
"That's good. Only by enduring hardships can they cultivate true skills. In this apocalypse, these kids will have a chance to survive."
"Yes, I entrust them to you. Here, take this!" Bai Tang tossed a bottle of pills to Yuan Mingyi.
Yuan Mingyi opened the bottle cap and took a look, jumping up in surprise: "Antidote Pill?"
He had personally experienced the effectiveness of the Antidote Pill; it was a top-quality pill with a high chance of expelling the zombie virus.
Bai Tang revealed her white teeth: "Ah! I found some materials and made another batch. There are twenty pills in the bottle; that should be enough for you, right?"
"Enough! Of course it's enough!" Yuan Mingyi excitedly tightened his grip on the medicine bottle. "Thank you so much!"
Compared to a truckload of supplies, this bottle of pills is even more precious! With these twenty pills, they don't have to worry about turning into zombies!
"I'll leave the kids to you; I'm off!"
"In such a hurry? Where are you going?"
"I'm going to the capital!" Bai Tang said. "I want to find a few capable people I know; I hope my abilities can help everyone escape this apocalypse as soon as possible!"
The words were a bit too bold, and Yuan Mingyi was somewhat skeptical, but he didn't say much and sent Bai Tang and the others out of the mountain.
As they moved further into the Dongshan Mountain Range, it disappeared from view, and Yi Qian withdrew his gaze.
"Don't worry! With the Dongshan Sect as a guarantee, these kids will survive just fine," Bai Tang said to the young man. The flying sword could only carry two people, so they continued driving their car. There were flying vehicles for sale in the mall, but unfortunately, they were too expensive to afford.
"Thank you, Master!" The young man felt that his master was the best person in the world; not only had he saved him, but he had also saved his uncle and the children.
"Good person," Bai Tang grinned: "No need to thank me, young man! You need to be mentally prepared; the arduous journey of training has begun!"
Yi Qian was not afraid of hardship. Having suffered from illness for so long, he envied those young people who could run freely under the blue sky. Now he could run and jump... fulfilling a wish he had held for many years. Even if he felt exhausted like a dog, he was joyful inside. The spirit pearl within Yi Qian's body was truly a wonderful thing; with its help, Yi Qian reached the first level of Qi Refinement in just one hour and reached the second level in three hours. By the time they arrived in Beijing, Yi Qian had already become a master at the tenth level of Qi Refinement, equivalent to an early-stage Level Four Ability User. Currently, the strongest ability users in the country were only at the peak of Level Two.
As for individuals, Yi Qian didn't need to worry; Zhuang Nianchen was that peak Level Two Ability User. Bai Tang taught him how to absorb Crystal Core energy and how to kill zombies more effectively, which greatly benefited Zhuang Nianchen. Throughout this journey, both Yi Qian and Zhuang Nianchen underwent significant changes in temperament. If anyone who knew them before saw them now, they would never believe that these two men exuding fierce killing intent were just weak boys and refined scholars from a few months ago.
"Qian, once we reach Beijing Base, you should stay there! I know a few people with some status; if they're still alive, I can have them look after you."
The car entered the territory of Beijing. Although there was still quite a distance to the base, there were no signs of zombies anymore. In the fields by the roadside swayed crops that Beijing residents had hurriedly planted—though the land was polluted and many food crops could no longer be grown, some mutated plants managed to survive in contaminated soil. While these plants didn't taste great, being able to eat anything at all was something to be grateful for; no one would complain about taste.
