Bai Tang watched the figure of Yu Luocha until it disappeared, slowly descending to the ground. The starry sky tonight was bright; even without the moonlight, one could see the blurred scenery around. The Morning Star rose slowly in the east, representing hope after the night. In the garden, a young man waited with hope for Bai Tang.
"He has left; no one will trouble you anymore," Bai Tang said to the young man.
The young man let out a long sigh, finally relieved after half a year of anxiety.
"Thank you!" the young man said sincerely.
Bai Tang waved her hand, "I helped you because of Mei Mei; just treat her well."
The young man clenched his fist and promised, "Even if it weren't for your kindness, I would treat her well. She will be my beloved wife."
Bai Tang brushed past the young man, "Remember your vow; if you betray Mei Mei, I will make your life worse than death, Brother-in-law!"
Until Bai Tang returned to her room, the young man relaxed his fist and smiled—a lighthearted smile. After more than ten years, he had finally escaped the nightmare of Yu Luocha. He would have a wife and eventually children, living a stable and ordinary life. As for the so-called martial world, he had no intention of getting involved! The steward lowered his head; before uncovering the truth, he never expected that seemingly weak woman could possess such a cruel heart—bribing one of the midwives to drug his wife during childbirth. Footsteps approached outside the study; the steward knew that it wasn't an ordinary servant since he had instructed others not to approach the study casually. Upon opening the door, it turned out that it was indeed his wife's personal maid.
"What's wrong, my lady?" Li Laoye asked anxiously. He thought that his wife's maid coming to find him at such a late hour meant something was wrong with her health, and he was worried.
The maid bowed to Li Laoye and replied, "The lady is in good health. She woke up feeling well and asked me to call Master to her room to discuss something."
"I'll go right away!" Li Laoye immediately set aside his worries, following the maid to Lady Li's room.
Lady Li's current room was the delivery room. According to custom, Li Laoye should not enter, especially since it was customary for the male head of the household not to see women during their confinement period. However, Li Laoye and his wife shared a deep bond, and he paid no mind to these taboos as he entered Lady Li's bedroom.
Lady Li was leaning against the bedpost, looking well, which relieved Li Laoye's anxious heart. Li Feidao was not in the room; he had been taken by the wet nurse to another room to sleep.
"My lady, how do you feel?" Li Laoye sat by the bed and took Lady Li's hand.
Lady Li smiled, "I feel great, even better than before my pregnancy. The White Divine Doctor's medicine is extraordinary."
Li Laoye smiled back, "That's good to hear. My lady, did you call me for something?"
Lady Li's smile faded: "You all leave!"
The maid and other servants bowed and quietly exited the room.
"My lady?" Li Laoye also lost his smile, sensing that his wife knew the truth.
"Who is the mastermind behind Lin Wenbo?" Lady Li asked. During childbirth, due to pain and danger, she hadn't noticed Lin Wenbo's actions. But upon reflection, it was strange that her strength had inexplicably vanished; she didn't believe that no one had acted against her.
As expected, Li Laoye sighed and said, "It's Shuixin."
"How could it be her?" Lady Li was incredibly shocked, followed by a surge of anger from betrayal. "I treated her like a sister, and she did this to me!"
Li Laoye quickly comforted his wife: "Don't get angry; it's not worth ruining your health over such a woman."
"Did you already know the true nature of this woman?" Lady Li asked.
"This..." Li Laoye hesitated for a moment but decided to tell his wife the truth, "She once seduced me, but I did not agree."
Lady Li said, "Was that when you suggested I drive her out of Li Garden?"
Li Laoye nodded, "Yes!"
Lady Li felt a tightness in her chest; her judgment had been so poor that she had brought a femme fatale into Li Garden, who not only coveted her husband but also wanted her and her son's lives.
"Am I very foolish?"
Li Laoye quickly shook his head, "No, you are just too kind-hearted. You did nothing wrong; the one at fault is that woman. She is inherently wicked and has nothing to do with you. Look at Water Spirit; she was also saved by you, yet Water Spirit is filled with gratitude. Your actions back then were not wrong."
Bai Tang sat on a branch, munching on an apple while listening to the couple's conversation. From their discussion, Bai Tang learned about the identities of the two women: Shuixin and Water Spirit. Shuixin was once a renowned courtesan and was the beloved confidante of Li Laoye's elder brother. Li Laoye originally had an older brother who was also talented and was supposed to marry Lady Li. One day, while socializing at a brothel with friends, Elder Brother Li met Shuixin and was captivated by her beauty and talent. He even defied Old Master Li, stating he would not marry Lady Li but instead take the courtesan as his legitimate wife. In a fit of anger, Old Master Li expelled Elder Brother Li from Li Garden and arranged for his son to marry Lady Li instead. Fortunately, after their marriage, Li Laoye and Lady Li got along well and fell in love with each other, leading a happy life together. After being expelled from home, Elder Brother Li used his savings to redeem Shuixin from the brothel, and they enjoyed a harmonious life together for a time. However, Shuixin was an ambitious woman who chose Elder Brother Li because of his status. She believed that even though he had been expelled from Li Garden, he was still Old Master Li's biological son and that Old Master Li would eventually forgive him. Indeed, as she expected, Old Master Li summoned his eldest son back before passing away. However, although Old Master Li forgave Elder Brother Li, he did not leave the family estate to him but instead to Li Laoye, leaving Elder Brother Li with only a portion of the inheritance. Perhaps out of sorrow or disappointment, Elder Brother Li met with an accident on his way back home after returning to Shuixin and died. Naturally, the inheritance left by Old Master Li returned to the Li Family. All of Shuixin's calculations came to nothing.
