A bright moon hung in the sky, and the atmosphere was particularly chilly. Li Rui, however, moved swiftly like an ordinary person as he infiltrated the area. This place was filled with explosives, and the air was thick with the acrid smell of gunpowder. Li Rui covered his nose, trying hard to make no sound, and then directly climbed over the high wall.
With a thud, he landed on the ground, his hands supporting him as his sharp gaze observed the surroundings. There were no signs of abnormality, and Li Rui let out a long sigh. He slowly stood up and made his way down the path.
It felt as if he had entered the interior of an ammunition depot; as the smell of gunpowder grew stronger, Li Rui's footsteps became lighter, fearful of making any noise.
In the distance, several lights flickered on, and the sparse sound of footsteps made Li Rui heighten his vigilance. For the first time, he felt a sense of guilt akin to that of a thief; he could even hear his own heartbeat, which surprised him.
It turned out to be just a simple patrol team carrying flashlights. Li Rui patted his chest, trying to calm himself down. As the footsteps drew closer, he found a concealed spot to hide.
However, sometimes what one fears most is what comes to pass.
With a crack, Li Rui accidentally stepped on a twig, and the sound was enough to alert others.
The patrol team paused. "Wait a minute, I think I heard something," said a bald man who looked different from the others—likely the captain—as he waved for the team to stop.
Li Rui froze in place. Although it would be easy for this ten-member team to deal with him with just a wave of their hands, the awkwardness of the moment made him feel somewhat embarrassed.
The bald captain became alert, raising his weapon and slowly approaching the source of the sound.
Li Rui held his breath and closed his eyes before suddenly standing up.
Everyone raised their weapons in unison. "Who’s there?"
The captain shouted sharply, causing Li Rui—who was unarmed—not to dare resist. With a smile on his face, Li Rui said, "Boss, I'm a member of another patrol team taking a break here."
He lowered his head in a submissive manner.
"Hmm? You're from a patrol team?" The bald captain looked skeptical and scrutinized Li Rui closely. "Why aren’t you wearing patrol team attire?"
Li Rui quickly thought on his feet. "The uniform smelled terrible; I just washed it today and didn’t have it on yet."
"Hmph." The bald captain snorted coldly, looking at Li Rui as if he were a joke. The people behind him began to laugh, mocking Li Rui for not being hygienic.
Li Rui shyly scratched his head and smiled, while secretly hoping they wouldn't see through him.
Seeing Li Rui's silly smile, the Bald Captain reached out and struck Li Rui's head hard. "You little brat, what are you laughing at? I'm punishing you to patrol with me today. If you dare slack off, I'll beat you to death."
Li Rui rubbed his head, feeling quite painful, but he endured it. However, when he heard he would be beaten to death, he became unhappy.
The Bald Captain glared fiercely at Li Rui and pulled out a long whip from his pocket, which looked very sharp and frightened everyone around. Clearly, they had been beaten often in the past.
At this moment, Li Rui remained calm. "Boss, please don't! I won't dare again; just forgive me this once." Li Rui wasn't afraid of the Bald Captain but didn't want to deal with him right now, so he could only pretend to beg for mercy.
"Hmph, do you think you can ignore my words? Are you looking for death?" The Captain seemed to leave no room for negotiation and swung the whip toward Li Rui's arm. It cut through the air sharply and was incredibly fierce; a single strike could leave deep marks.
"Do you know who I am? I run this entire squad! What do you count for? I haven't rested yet, and you're already resting!" The Captain boasted again.
Li Rui certainly didn't want to be beaten. He quickly dodged the long whip with a swift movement. This surprising turn made everyone’s eyes widen. It wasn't that Li Rui's movements were cool; it was that he dared to defy the Captain's orders, which was truly bold. Everyone began to worry for Li Rui.
"Good boy, how dare you dodge my whip? I'll make sure you can't!" The Bald Captain was relentless and sneered as he swung the whip again toward Li Rui.
Crack! A loud sound echoed as muscle met whip, creating a shocking scene. The Bald Captain quickly realized that while Li Rui appeared unscathed, his own face felt a burning pain.
The Bald Captain looked bewildered, unable to believe what had just happened. His whip had clearly aimed at Li Rui, yet now Li Rui seemed completely fine, which was quite unexpected.
What was going on? Everyone turned their gaze toward Li Rui; it was indeed a strange occurrence.
Li Rui no longer wore a smile; his face turned cold. "Captain, do you think you can hit people at will?"
The Captain touched the blood mark on his face, his expression becoming even more menacing. "You really want to die!"
Then, a long whip sliced through the silence in the air. Li Rui showed no fear; he stood still as the wind gently lifted his clothes. The once fierce Captain was truly enraged!
In a flash, Li Rui swiftly snatched the Bald Captain's whip from his hand and kicked him down to the ground.
The Captain immediately felt a powerful force on his wrist, leaving him no room to resist, and then he was kicked away.
The Bald Captain lay on the ground, spitting out a mouthful of blood, and just as he tried to get up, Li Rui quickly stepped forward and stomped down.
Everyone was astonished that this person dared to rebel and treat the usually fierce Captain like this.
Li Rui held a whip in his hand, glaring at him fiercely. The Captain's heart raced in panic, "What are you going to do?"
With a loud crack, there were no more words; instead, the whip struck his face, leaving deep bloody marks.
Ah... The Captain screamed in pain, his face becoming a bloody mess from Li Rui's blows.
"Captain! Captain, your whip is quite impressive," Li Rui said with a smile, stepping on the Bald Captain and whipping him mercilessly.
Li Rui seemed to put even more force into it, starting to slap the Bald Captain's face while mocking him disdainfully, "Captain? Aren't you quite impressive?" At that moment, the Bald Captain could not respond; he coughed up blood, his eyes losing their fierce aura. In front of Li Rui, he appeared like a deflated balloon.
