He approached her, reminding her of that distant night when she first learned his true identity. That night, he had also stepped closer to her, leading her into the beautiful world of his imagination. Today, he was doing the same, but this time, where would he take her—heaven or hell?
He opened his arms and gently pulled her into his embrace. He remained silent, holding her as time drifted and emotions shifted. After a long while, he finally spoke softly, "Mo Su, come with me for a walk."
Walking under the moonlight was not new to them, but the feeling was entirely different from before. She glanced at her watch; it was three in the morning. The streets were empty, with not a single shadow in sight. All they could hear was the sound of the gentle breeze and see their reflections walking side by side. He held her hand and walked slowly without a destination or words, just strolling down the street, through alleys, past the lake, watching the sparse stars and listening to the birds chirping.
After a while, he finally chose a spot to sit down. It was a flower grove where magnolias were in full bloom, their white petals shining brightly and exuding a delicate fragrance under the moonlight. She gently touched the flowers, feeling joy at their pure beauty. Shangguan Shaoyi smiled and said, "These flowers are like you, Mo Su—elegant and pure." She blushed slightly and shot him a playful glare without responding.
He spoke quietly again, his voice low as he shared, "In these past few days on the battlefield, I almost thought I wouldn't make it back." Cheng Mo paused, Water-colored Eyes looking at him with concern. He smiled and ruffled her hair gently. "But just thinking of you kept me going. War is no child's play; strategy, deployment, tactics—all are crucial. These things can be forged through talent or accumulated experience. However, there is one thing that cannot be easily cultivated."
"What is that?" Cheng Mo asked curiously.
Shangguan Shaoyi smiled faintly as he took her delicate hand and placed it over his heart. "A hardened heart."
"Some hearts are cruel; some are bloody; some are open-minded. But my heart is hardened." He raised an eyebrow with a smile at the corners of his lips. "I have had things, lost things, and regained things. These experiences have given me a tough exterior. But do you know what lies at the core?"
He turned to look at Cheng Mo Su; the moonlight illuminated her face softly, casting a gentle glow on her fair skin. She looked at him with Water-colored Eyes filled with confusion as she awaited his answer. He gently pulled her closer and whispered in her ear, "It's you."
"Me?" Cheng Mo Su found it hard to believe.
"Yes," Shangguan Shaoyi nodded. "When I sought refuge in your home, it was my lowest point. I appeared cold and proud on the outside but was filled with malice and fear inside. If you hadn't kept approaching me, I might have stopped believing in anyone in this world. When I returned to the North to seize power, you were always by my side. Do you remember that day when Zhang Chiqi took you hostage? Suddenly you pulled the trigger; fortunately, there were no bullets left in the gun; otherwise, I can't imagine what I would have become without you. Mo Su, this gentle affection is what gives me a hardened shell and reminds me that even in this cruel and dark world, there are still beautiful feelings."
Her hand slowly fell down; surrounded by magnolia flowers, her skin looked like snow against them while her Water Eyes resembled ink. After a moment of silence, she softly replied, "I'm not that important."
He adjusted her posture firmly; his pitch-black Eyes were filled with anger. "Whether you're important or not is determined by me—not by you."
"But right now, all I can do is hold you back," she said somewhat self-destructively.
"Having you here makes me feel at ease."
"If it weren't for me, you would still be fighting and wouldn't stop your pace," she said defiantly, her long eyelashes fluttering slightly.
He smiled; she really was a child at heart. "You're not wrong, but without you, I might become as cruel and tyrannical as Lin Hongyao."
"You wouldn't," she looked into his eyes, feeling a bit uneasy. Biting her lip, she asked, "Would you?"
"I would," he raised an eyebrow, speaking in a half-joking tone. "So if you don't want to see the world suffer, just stay by my side, okay?"
Cheng Mo obediently nodded, only then realizing she had been drawn into his words and made a promise contrary to her initial decision. A bit annoyed, she pouted and said, "You usually don’t talk much, but when you do, it’s so persuasive that all the resolutions I finally made get changed by you."
"To keep you by my side, I'm willing to try any method," he said with a gentle smile, tightening his embrace around her arm. In the moonlight, his fierce gaze on the battlefield softened with warmth.
She bit her lip, feeling somewhat anxious. She pulled her small head out of his embrace and said, "But Miss Shangguan..."
"With my sister around, you don't need to worry."
"But I can't help you. If one day you get tired of me..."
"If success relies on your help, then I would be too useless," he chuckled lightly, serious yet gentle. "You don't have to do anything; just stay home happily every day and take care of yourself. Don't think about so many troublesome things; that would make me very happy, understand?"
She closed her eyes and silently prayed, hoping that God would allow her to be willful.
She buried herself in his embrace again, her voice as soft as a whisper, "I understand." He stroked her head, holding her tightly, afraid that she would leave his side again. After an unknown amount of time, he felt his chest dampened by a warm liquid; he knew she was crying again. Although he felt pain for her tears, he understood that these were tears of joy and happiness.
He held her delicate little hand, feeling something poke him. Looking down, he saw the ring he had bought for her, glimmering softly in the moonlight. When she noticed his gaze on the ring, she smiled and said, "I was actually ready to leave and return the ring to you, but... I just can't bear to..." Her voice grew softer, "I'm afraid I'll forget our memories. I read somewhere that human memories are very fleeting; things from long ago feel like distant dreams. I don't want to..."
"We won't be distant dreams." He interrupted her, dispelling the unease in her heart. "We will be together forever; you can rest assured." She lifted her eyes, which were filled with a hazy mist; the moonlight spilled into her gaze, casting a faint halo.
His eyes were filled with warmth as he smiled and said, "The marriage certificate was written hastily. I originally wanted to write a line from an ancient poem I once read, but others said it was too sentimental and it wouldn't look good if others saw it."
She became interested and asked eagerly, "What was it?"
He looked at her steadily and gently said, "To become husband and wife through hair-binding, love without doubt."
She was taken aback for a moment, feeling a lump in her throat. Her fair cheeks blossomed with two shallow dimples. "I have one too."
"Really?" He raised an eyebrow, waiting for her to continue.
"May I be like the Star Lord and the moon, shining brightly together every night."
