The two said no more. He slowly took her small hand, but she sidestepped to avoid him. Seeing his brow furrowed, she couldn't help but smile lightly. "I need to freshen up."
He raised an eyebrow, nodded, and sat down on a nearby chair, watching her gather her hair into a soft bun. She turned to look at him, and her clear, bright eyes sparkled like water. "Alright, let's go."
They went downstairs, where Fengyin had already prepared breakfast. Nan Wan and Cheng Yi sat side by side, waiting for the two of them to take their seats.
Shangguan Shaoyi held Cheng Mo Su's delicate hand carefully, as if holding a fragile porcelain doll, his gaze filled with tenderness. She smiled slowly at him and then noticed her father. Realizing that her hand was tightly held and couldn't be pulled away, she blushed and said, "Dad."
"Su'er, you're awake." Cheng Yi smiled at her. "Come sit down."
"Yes." She was still unaware that her father and Shaoyi had reconciled and felt a bit uneasy, glancing between the two. Shangguan Shaoyi found it amusing and pulled her to sit down, pouring her a glass of water. The gentle ripples in the sunlight shimmered softly as she smiled gently and took a small sip.
"Father-in-law, about what you mentioned yesterday..." Before he could finish his sentence, Cheng Mo Su beside him choked on the water and started coughing. He frowned slightly and hurriedly helped her catch her breath. "Why are you drinking so hastily?" His tone carried a hint of concerned reproach. She was momentarily taken aback, not knowing how he could say "father-in-law" so naturally.
Nan Wan couldn't help but chuckle. "Miss Cheng, there's no need to panic. These two reconciled even before you woke up yesterday."
Cheng Mo Su looked at Shangguan Shaoyi and then at her father, feeling a wave of joy rising in her heart, expanding like it wanted to burst out of her body. Shangguan Shaoyi seemed to remember something and introduced, "This shop owner is quite remarkable; he is Mr. Nan Wan from the Shanghai Nanbang and also our savior."
"Oh?" Cheng Mo Su turned to look at Nan Wan. When she first arrived at the inn, she sensed an indescribable mystery and extraordinary charisma about him. Now that she learned he was the famous Nan Wan, it wasn't surprising; however...
She slightly furrowed her brows, recalling that her father had mentioned Nan Wan and Jiang Shaohao were sworn brothers and that Nan Wan had once helped the Zhu Family eliminate her Cheng Family.
Nan Wan seemed to see her doubts and spoke candidly. "Miss Cheng, back then I didn't recognize you and naturally had to accept Shaohao's request. But now that we know each other, I feel you have a calm demeanor and maintain your true self even in chaotic times. You pursue your feelings with determination; I have always acted according to my heart and genuinely consider you a friend. I will never do anything to threaten your Cheng Family."
She smiled lightly and picked up the cup of water in front of her. "Thank you, Mr. Nan. If I still have any doubts, it would be judging a gentleman with the heart of a petty person. I will toast with water instead of wine, thanking you, Mr. Nan, for saving me and..." Her fair face showed a slight blush. "...and my husband."
These two seemingly insignificant words struck directly into his heart, creating a wave of tenderness that filled him intoxicatingly. He couldn't help but smile as he raised his cup, his black eyes shining. "I will toast with tea instead of wine, as a sign of respect."
"Thank you, Mr. Shangguan, Consort Shangguan."
Feng Yin stood to the side, quietly wiping away her nearly overflowing tears. She had grown up alongside Cheng Mo Su and had witnessed her growth firsthand, seeing how she fell deeply in love with Shaoyi and how she escaped from her binding family, how heartbroken she was, and how she searched for her husband across miles. Now, the young lady had finally found happiness; everyone sighed at how deeply Shaoyi cared, but who knew the determination behind the young lady?
Cheng Yi coughed twice, interrupting the warm scene they had finally managed to create. "Shaoyi, have you thought about my suggestion?"
Shangguan Shaoyi frowned slightly, and Cheng Mo Su's heart sank. She understood her father well enough to guess his proposal. Before Shaoyi could speak, she said, "Now the land is ravaged, corpses are everywhere, and war is rampant. We need talents like Shaoyi; please don't let him take me away. He must stay."
Everyone was taken aback. Cheng Mo Su spoke calmly and lightly as if it were just water, but it was the result of countless struggles and deep contemplation. Shangguan Shaoyi's bright eyes trembled slightly as Cheng Mo Su's gentle profile quietly rippled in his gaze, making him want to stay for a lifetime.
Her delicate fingertips lightly touched his large hand. He smiled and clenched his fist tightly, looking steadily at Cheng Yi. "The rise and fall of a nation is not the responsibility of an individual; it is for those who benefit from it to scheme. The rise and fall of the world is everyone's responsibility. Now that Japan's ambitions are clear as day, as long as I have life left in me, I will fight against them to the end."
Cheng Yi paused for a moment before shifting his gaze to Cheng Mo Su. "Su Er, what about you? What do you think?"
She smiled lightly and looked down at the clear water in the glass cup. Her voice was soft like water rippling gently. "Dad, I've made up my mind." She raised her gaze seriously to Cheng Yi. "Wherever he is, I will be there too."
At that moment, all restlessness in the air seemed to stop; every breath was clear and distinct. Their smiles when they looked at each other felt like an eternal painting—unchanging through time.
Cheng Yi sighed as if he had anticipated this outcome long ago. "Shaoyi, I once held many prejudices against you because your ambitions were too great and your strength unstable. I feared handing Su Er over to you would cause her suffering. But now you have matured and understand the urgency of matters; Su Er is no longer that naive girl who acted on impulse without thinking things through. The decision you both are making now must have come after much struggle and consideration."
He stared intently at Shangguan Shaoyi. "Shaoyi, I entrust my daughter to you. No matter when, you must protect her well and not let anyone harm her in the slightest."
"Rest assured, Father-in-law, such a thing will never happen again," he replied firmly, his words resolute.
"Very well." Cheng Yi nodded. "If one day you change your mind, I will not hesitate to bring Su'er back to my side."
"That is impossible. Unless I die, my feelings will not change even the slightest bit." He answered without hesitation, his Black Eyes shining brightly.
Cheng Yi nodded and walked over to Cheng Mo Su, placing her delicate hand into Shaoyi's palm. "This is a special time; I fear you cannot hold a grand wedding. But at this moment, I sincerely entrust my daughter to you, hoping you will treat her well."
Shangguan Shaoyi nodded solemnly, as if making a lifelong promise.
Cheng Mo Su's eyes turned slightly red. The happiness she had longed for quietly descended upon her. Although the journey had been incredibly tortuous and difficult, the outcome was ultimately good; her father had finally accepted the person she deeply loved.
With tears in her eyes, blurring her father's face, she embraced him and whispered, "Dad... thank you..."
Cheng Yi smiled gently, patting her back to soothe her emotions. "Su'er, I just want you to know that everything I do is for your own good, all of it."
