The night deepened a little more as she stood by the window, the cool breeze gently brushing against her fair, snow-like face. The perfectly white earrings she fiddled with made a soft rustling sound. She stood there, Cheng Yi silently watching her back, knowing that she was holding back pain and reluctance within her heart, unsure of how to comfort her in that moment. 0

After a long silence, he slowly approached and patted his daughter's shoulder. Seeing the moisture gathering in her bright eyes, he couldn't bear to look any longer and said, "Do you want to have some late-night snacks?" 0

"Mm." She nodded and followed her father to the dining room. Her gaze drifted toward the tightly closed door on the other side; the return of the boat ticket was at midnight, and Shaoyi was probably inside planning how to regain military power. She felt it was best not to disturb him. 0

The dining room was neither too big nor too small but particularly elegant, with a purple-blue tablecloth adorned with exquisite candlesticks, radiating just the right amount of warmth. A faint light spilled onto the floor, casting a soft glow throughout the room. She gently pulled out a chair and sat down slowly as the butler brought over a small plate of snacks and coffee, the fragrant aroma enveloping her. 0

Her delicate fingers held the silver knife and fork beside her, suspended in mid-air, but ultimately halted by her troubled thoughts. 0

Cheng Yi sighed; he observed every move of his daughter. Suddenly, he felt a twinge of resentment toward his own selfishness but didn't want his daughter to return to suffering. His conflicted emotions had nowhere to be released, so he softened his voice and said, "Try this; see if it suits your taste. If you don't like it, I'll replace the cooks tomorrow." 0

She didn't eat either; her watery eyes were cast down lightly, her feather-like long eyelashes fluttering slowly. "Mm, it suits my taste." 0

"Mosu." Cheng Yi's tone became slightly stern. "You hardly ate dinner; if you don't eat something now, your body won't hold up." 0

"It's fine." She replied softly but met Cheng Yi's concerned gaze, feeling a momentary pause in her heart. She reached for the fine tea leaves in the tea cabinet. "I still prefer drinking tea." 0

Cheng Yi nodded and casually turned on the radio. The voice seemed to come from a distant place, quietly drifting through the air. 0

"Recently, Manchuria has been established in Northeast China; it is reported that the last emperor..." Cheng Yi abruptly turned off the radio without looking at Cheng Mosu's expression, awkwardly tugging at the corner of his mouth. "It's late now; let's finish eating and go to sleep." 0

Cheng Mosu gently bit her rose-colored lips, feeling as if that gentle female voice from earlier had transformed into a heavy weight pressing down on her heart like a large stone, making it hard for her to breathe. Unable to suppress her emotions any longer, she stopped her father's footsteps and said, "Dad, please forgive my unfilial behavior; I..." 0

Cheng Yi turned around and looked at her intently. Her Water Eyes were calm yet exceptionally firm. He sighed, knowing that his daughter had made her decision. Although he felt heartbroken, he understood that he should not intervene. With his hands clasped behind his back, he walked toward his room, his silhouette carrying a sense of loneliness and helplessness, his heart heavy with sorrow. 0

She remained silent, sitting quietly. The already tranquil night was now devoid of any sound. In the fleeting light and shadows, those old matters seemed to have passed so long ago. She could not bear to see his cold demeanor any longer and did not want his black-and-white eyes to be filled with bloodshot veins. 0

“Mosu.” She snapped back to reality upon hearing Father’s voice and got up to walk into Father’s room. Cheng Yi looked exhausted, pinching the bridge of his nose. The tobacco pipe on the table was made even colder by the moonlight, and his voice carried a hint of chill. “Mosu, have you thought it through?” 0

“Yes.” She replied softly, her tone flat and unruffled. 0

“Dad only has you left as family; you are my only concern now.” His voice was particularly deep, echoing loneliness in the night. “If anything happens to you, I truly…” 0

“Dad, I won’t get into trouble; Shaoyi will protect me.” She interrupted Father’s worries firmly. 0

Cheng Yi glanced at her. His daughter had grown up; she could no longer be kept by him. Although he had known this early on, he still made a gamble, which turned out to be a complete failure. The air was filled with his helpless sighs as he opened the drawer and took out a ticket. “Go back with him; I bought two tickets.” 0

Her pupils tightened slightly, an indescribable bitterness surged within her. Her voice choked as she grasped Father’s hand. “Dad, I’m sorry… I know I’m unfilial for not being able to stay with you, but… if I don’t follow Shaoyi, I will never find peace in this life.” 0

“I know; you don’t need to say more.” He glanced at the nearby Rosewood Clock, his gaze distant as he intentionally concealed his reluctance to part ways. “Time is running out; go with him. There’s no need to say goodbye because one day we will meet again.” 0

She fell silent for a moment and stopped speaking, understanding Father’s meaning. She turned around and closed the door gently; the soft click interrupted the peaceful life she could have had. She smiled lightly, feeling a sense of relief as following Shaoyi—whether it was a perilous path or a dangerous situation—no longer mattered. 0

Shangguan Shaoyi opened the door and immediately saw her gentle smile. He paused for a moment, feelings of reluctance and tenderness alternating within him, threatening to overwhelm him. He slowly approached her; she wore a light blue long dress and quietly cast her gaze toward him. The elegant and serene smile on her face struck directly into his heart, painting it with freshness. 0

“Cheng Mosu…” He feared that if he continued to look at her, his hardened heart would waver. Concealing his reluctance, he reached out to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear from her snowy forehead. “I’m leaving.” 0

"Mm." She responded emotionlessly, her delicate fingertips hooking onto his broad palm, the corners of her lips smiling, her eyes filled with affection. "Let's go." 0

He frowned slightly, looking at her tightly clenched hand. "Cheng Mosu, what are you doing…" 0

"I told you, wherever you are, I will be there too." He stared at her in a daze, a slight twitch at his temple. The clear ripples in her eyes seemed to seep into his heart. He straightened his back, though it carried a hint of stiffness, as if in disbelief. 0

"Cheng Mosu, it's very dangerous to go this time. You should stay here and wait for me." His breathing became constricted as he gazed at her gentle countenance. She shook her head, a faint smile swirling on her lips, her gaze soft yet resolute. 0

"As for Father-in-law..." 0

"Don't worry, Dad agreed." Cheng Mosu no longer looked at him; she simply tightened her grip on his hand, her eyes like water as she slowly leaned against his upright figure, peeking out with her delicate head and smiling brightly. "Shaoyi, you will protect me, right?" 0

"Of course." Without a second thought, he replied. In his dark and deep eyes were traces of joy and pain. His gaze fell upon her beautiful countenance, feeling an overwhelming sense of depth and tranquility. He wrapped his arms around her firmly, his tone resolute as if making a priceless promise. "Cheng Mosu, I won't let you suffer even the slightest harm." 0
