"Madam, you... you are making it very difficult for me," Shen Mingliang said, blocking Jiang Yating from rushing into the command center, feeling helpless.
"Is that so? What’s so difficult about it? I am Shaoyi's wife; it is only natural for me to come here to see my husband. You stopping me from entering is simply inhumane." She raised her eyebrows, her red lips slightly curling.
Shen Mingliang felt that women were extremely troublesome. The more he thought about it, the more he felt that his own wife was like a celestial being, never causing trouble and allowing him to enjoy peace. He forced a smile and said, "I really can't allow it. The Young Marshal has instructed that no one is to enter the command center. Please don't make it difficult for me."
"No one is allowed?" Jiang Yating bit her lip corners, her delicate brows showing a cold and unwilling light. Hmph, if the person coming was Cheng Mo Su, she feared that Shangguan Shaoyi would carry her in on a grand sedan chair!
Ignoring Shen Mingliang's words, Jiang Yating charged straight inside. Shen Mingliang didn’t dare to reach out to stop her, fearing for the safety of the child in her womb. If anything happened, even if the Young Marshal did not blame him, he would still have to take his own life.
Jiang Yating was clever; seeing that Shen Mingliang did not stop her, she sat down against the wall on the cold ground. Her beautiful brow trembled slightly; although she was prepared, when the chill hit her, she could not withstand the cold and twisted her facial expression.
"Oh no! Madam, why are you sitting on the ground? It's cold down there; please get up!"
"I know that Shaoyi is not in the command center today." She smiled knowingly, a hint of curiosity in her eyes. "Otherwise, with his personality, he would have come out long ago to chase me away."
Shen Mingliang was taken aback; even in the cold winter, beads of sweat began to form in his palms. He thought back to when he accompanied the Young Marshal to battle against thousands of enemies without fear. Now faced with a woman, he found himself at a loss and could only sigh and speak honestly: "Yes, today the Young Marshal went to the camp to visit the wounded soldiers."
"Oh?" Her eyes brightened as a plan formed in her mind. "Then I will trouble Deputy Officer Shen to take me there."
"This..." Shen Mingliang scratched his head awkwardly. "Madam, you should prioritize your health. The wounded soldiers in the camp might disturb your pregnancy; it would be too much of a loss if something happened."
Jiang Yating nodded, her red lips curving higher as her eyes sparkled in the winter sunlight. "Since Deputy Officer Shen is unwilling to take me there, I will just sit here until something happens. If anything goes wrong, I will tell my sister that it was Deputy Officer Shen who made me angry and caused me to accidentally..."
Before she could finish her sentence, Shen Mingliang immediately waved his hand in surrender and said, "Alright, your ladyship! Please don’t say such ominous things! I will take you there right now!"
Jiang Yating smiled lightly, supporting herself against the Wall as she stood up. Suddenly, she felt a bit dizzy, and her vision darkened, causing her complexion to pale slightly. This startled Shen Mingliang quite a bit, and he hurriedly said, "Madam, what's wrong? Please don't scare me; I can't handle it!"
"It's nothing." She pinched her pulse; it was still relatively steady. Perhaps it was due to worrying too much recently and eating too little that had led to her severe anemia. She smiled at Shen Mingliang and gestured for him to lead the way, saying, "Please guide me, Shen Deputy Officer."
The Command Center only had one open military vehicle left. With no other choice, the two of them got into the vehicle. Although it was noon and the sun was shining brightly, the mild light did not provide her with any warmth. The crimson color of her lips slowly faded, and she strained to hold herself up, gripping the handrail with her delicate fingers. Her eyes were bright and fixed straight ahead, while the cold wind whistled past her ears, making her restless; she was barely holding on through sheer willpower.
"Madam, if you're not feeling well, I can take you back..."
"Shut up! If you dare take me back, I'll jump out of this car!" She glared at him, and Shen Mingliang quickly fell silent, focusing intently on driving as they entered the Injured Soldiers' Camp.
When the wheels stopped rolling, she braced herself with her arms and jumped out of the vehicle without acknowledging Shen Mingliang's offer of support, walking straight inside. She paused for a moment, looking at the dilapidated building ahead; the rotten smell wafted through the air and slowly invaded her breath.
She couldn't suppress the turmoil in her stomach and leaned against a small sapling before retching violently.
Shangguan Shaoyi happened to be standing at the door. He was momentarily taken aback upon seeing her but frowned when he noticed how unwell she looked.
She lifted her gaze and met his Ink-black eyes. However, his expression no longer held only disdain; there was a hint of an emotion she couldn't quite describe. She smiled faintly and stepped inside. He quickly reached out to stop her and said sternly, "What are you doing here?"
Her gaze drifted past him to the injured soldiers who were curiously watching her. Suppressing her inner panic, she smiled gently at them and said, "Today I came with Young Commander to visit you all. I hope you recover soon and reunite safely with your families."
Shangguan Shaoyi was momentarily stunned, a cold glint passing through his eyes. "You should go back..."
"Madam! Madam has come to see us!" one of the Wounded Soldiers exclaimed in excitement. "We heard that Madam is pregnant; we didn't expect you would come to visit someone like me in such poor health."
Jiang Yating turned her gaze to him. He had been destroyed by the artillery fire, looking almost unrecognizable. She suppressed the churning acid in her stomach, revealing a gentle smile and soft eyes as she held his hand and said, "This is what I should do. You are not worthless; your existence has value. You cannot give up on yourself. You must recover soon. Both your family and the Country need brave people like you."
Her words unexpectedly touched the hearts of the Wounded Soldiers. The emotions they had suppressed for so long surged forth, leading to tears and sobs.
She turned her face, intending to smile proudly at Shangguan Shaoyi, but fatigue and inner weariness overwhelmed her, causing her to fall backward. Shangguan Shaoyi hurriedly supported her slender waist, furrowing his brow as he picked her up and placed her in the car.
Fresh air rushed in as she breathed, slowly bringing her back to consciousness as she opened her eyes.
"What are you doing here? This is not a place for you. Go back and rest!" His tone was stern, but she silently smiled; he indeed showed some concern for her.
She bit her pale lips, wanting to gently nestle in his embrace and smell the faint scent of gunpowder. Suddenly, she froze, recalling her father's words from yesterday.
A sense of indescribable anxiety and helplessness filled her heart. She closed her eyes and said, "Alright, I will go back to rest, but can you come back to keep me company tonight?"
Shangguan Shaoyi was silent for a moment; deep within his dark pupils was a profound light. "I can't tonight; I have a dinner meeting with Ruan Yu to discuss important matters. You should have heard your father mention it."
"Oh." She responded without emotion, lowering her gaze. "Then how about you take me with you tonight?"
He narrowed his pupils and let out a cold laugh, not noticing her increasingly pale cheeks and dimming eyes. "If it's just to eavesdrop on my conversation with Ruan Yu, you could have just asked directly instead of going through all this trouble." He paused, his gaze sharp as ice. "Fine, I will agree to your request."
