Shangguan Residence The dazzling gate was pushed open with a strong force. She quietly looked over, and her Water-colored eyes brightened a little. She thought she would return and never see him again. Yet on such a bright morning, seeing his returning figure made her unconsciously smile.
Shangguan Shaoyi saw the smiling Cheng Mo Su and was momentarily stunned. Jiang Yating hurriedly stepped forward to brush off the dust from his medal, which shone with a clear brilliance under the sunlight. She smiled slightly and said, "Tonight, General Ruan and Madam Ruan will be leaving. I was thinking of hosting a farewell banquet at home for lunch. What do you think?"
He remained silent, his figure standing straight, ignoring Jiang Yating's surprised gaze as he walked in front of Cheng Mo Su and said, "You're leaving; let me see you off."
"No need," she replied softly, trying her best to show him a smile. He chuckled and suddenly grasped her hand. She was taken aback, looking at the dazzling buttons on his uniform and then into his deep, dark eyes. She bit her Rose-Colored Lips, feeling something inside her heat up intensely, leaving her no time to think as she followed his steps out.
He opened the car door for her, and she sat in the passenger seat while he stared ahead. She secretly studied his chiseled profile as usual. Under the sunlight, her delicate features were coated with a layer of serene luster. He glanced back at her, feeling a tightness in his chest as he pressed down on the accelerator, speeding away.
"Where are we going?" she asked as she noticed the car speed increasing and the scenery flashing by.
He raised an eyebrow but did not answer her question. The light was softened by a gentle barrier as he said softly, "Are you afraid I'll take you away?"
Her heart skipped a beat; she actually wished he would take her to an unrecognizable place. However, she felt a heavy weight in her heart, knowing his ambitions—how could she dare to hope for such a thing? Looking at the unfamiliar surroundings made her pause. "You... where are you going? Aren't you afraid of leaving the Concession Area..."
He turned to her with a smile and simply said, "Hold on tight; I'm going to accelerate."
The car drove extremely fast; she didn't dare to breathe freely, her heart racing rapidly, causing her to feel flustered. One hand was on the steering wheel while the other held her cool palm, wrapping her small fist in his warm grasp. A faint blush appeared on her face as he pressed the brakes. She looked out the window and was taken aback.
Reluctantly releasing her hand, he opened the car door for her. She slowly stepped out and gazed at the frozen lake before her, which resembled that lake in Feng Province. On that night when she was fifteen, beside that lake, he had placed a ring on her finger and promised their future.
Now, everything had changed, yet he remained true to his original intentions.
"This is something I discovered by chance; this place resembles the lakes of Feng Province so much. The past has become empty, just like a dream," he said calmly, with a hint of fatigue and pallor in his eyes.
She couldn't help but shiver slightly, offering a faint smile as she gazed at the pristine lake surface, imagining the clarity after the snow melted. The water would eventually ripple, and those fleeting years would also grow weary. She looked up at him; how calm and intelligent he was, how could he not see her true identity, and how could he not understand her intentions?
She didn't want to expose it; she only wished to cherish this last moment with him.
He reached out and pulled her into his embrace. The fragrance of her flowing hair wafted through the cold air and into his breath. He took off his military coat and draped it over her shoulders. She smiled gently, listening to his voice slowly resonate in her ear, "I really don't understand what you young ladies are thinking, running out dressed so lightly in the middle of winter."
She bit her rose-colored lips, feeling a pang in her nose, her heart heavy with sorrow. Her eyes lowered, reddening, "May I be like the Star Lord, shining brightly every night."
He chuckled softly, "Bound by marriage, love without suspicion."
He looked at her delicate figure, paused for a moment, then continued, "Mosu, standing quietly with you at this moment makes me feel content."
She rubbed her eyes with her hand, feeling the hot tears about to overflow beyond her control. She had to turn away, her shoulders trembling slightly. "Shaoyi, I..."
She couldn't finish her sentence; her throat felt choked. Her fair and tender palm covered the tears that fell silently, filled with pain and sorrow. He felt a heavy suffocation in his heart and instinctively pulled her into his arms. His pitch-black eyes reflected her fragile form, echoing with melancholy.
He held her tightly, wishing he could merge her into his very being; everything else became unimportant.
Their initial meeting, the tumultuous separation—those once tangible moments of happiness now slipped away with time. He had once been cold and ambitious. She had also been innocent and quiet, always by his side. They had decided to face life together but ultimately could not withstand the waves of fate. They slowly overcame one peril after another but were destined to diverge on different paths.
If the Shangguan Family still thrived and the Cheng Family had not retreated from society, what direction would the world take? Now that external enemies invaded and prosperity faded away, society grew cold and indifferent; everything had turned into an unexpected outcome for them. It was because of schemes and intrigues that they were separated from their past.
He leaned against an Old Tree, and she nestled in his arms. He did not ask, and she did not say anything. They simply watched the Snowflakes drifting in the air, changing their shapes, while the Fragrance in his embrace slowly spread into the air. He lowered his gaze to her gentle smile, feeling that her Clear and Graceful Countenance was drifting further away from him, ultimately disappearing.
There were still traces of a ring on her Ring Finger. She extended her delicate Fingertips and smiled softly at him. Understanding her gesture, he took the ring she offered with her other hand and slowly slid it onto her Green Onion Jade Fingers. She smiled slightly, and his Jet-Black Eyes sparkled with a brightness like stars.
She leaned against his Shoulder, her burning tears turned icy by the Snowflakes, leaving a damp spot on his shoulder. He quietly held her without saying a word. She gazed at his sharply defined Face, and the dimming night made her feel uneasy.
In the end, she had to leave.
She bit her Rose-Colored Lips and raised her tear-filled Water Eyes. “Shaoyi, let’s go back.”
He paused for a moment, holding her soft little hand. He had once vowed in his heart that as long as she was alive, everything would be fine. Now that she stood before him in good health, his wish had been fulfilled; he dared not ask for more.
“Cheng Mosu,” he called her name, pouring all his love into it. She responded slowly, stunning time itself.
Fate arises and fades; life is already empty.
As heavy snow fell, dreams of parting lingered in several places.
