After that mysterious phone call, I felt as if I had been pushed to the edge of an unknown cliff. I knew that the next step could send me plummeting into the abyss, but curiosity and a sense of mission drove me to move forward.
I began to analyze that email seriously. "M is waiting for you"—what could this M possibly mean? My thoughts raced, and suddenly, an idea struck me: perhaps M stands for "Midpoint"!
If Z is the endpoint, then what would the midpoint be? I quickly wrote down Alphabet, counting to the middle—M is exactly the 13th letter!
But this discovery brought not answers, but more questions. Thirteen is considered an unlucky number in many cultures. Is this some kind of warning? Or does this number itself hide some kind of secret?
As I was lost in these thoughts, my phone buzzed again. This time, a string of coordinates appeared on the screen.
I entered the coordinates into the map and discovered they pointed to a subway station in central London. More specifically, it directed me to platform 13 of that station.
My heart raced. This was definitely not a coincidence.
Taking a deep breath, I grabbed my coat and rushed out the door. Night had fallen, and London's streets were shrouded in a thin mist. I took a taxi to the subway station, filled with anxiety and anticipation.
However, when I arrived, I encountered a strange phenomenon: there was no platform 13 at all! The platform numbers jumped directly from 12 to 14.
Standing on the empty platform, I felt a wave of confusion wash over me. Was this all just a prank? Just as I was about to leave, I noticed a strange symbol on the wall at the end of the platform.
It was an encircled M.
I approached for a closer look and suddenly realized that the M was actually a clever mechanism. I gently pressed it, and the wall silently slid open, revealing a hidden passage.
My heart raced uncontrollably. This was undoubtedly a trap that could pose deadly dangers. But I knew that if I backed down now, I might never uncover the truth.
Taking a deep breath, I stepped into the passage.
Inside, it was pitch black, with only sporadic glowing letters on the walls providing faint illumination. I moved cautiously forward while keeping an eye out for anything unusual around me.
Suddenly, I heard a soft sound behind me. I turned sharply only to see that the entrance had closed off. Now, my only choice was to keep moving forward.
After about ten minutes of walking, I arrived at a circular room. In the center stood a pedestal with a book on it.
As I approached, I realized it was a dictionary. But this dictionary was different: each page contained only one word, and all those words started with M.
I flipped through the dictionary and suddenly noticed that each word had a string of numbers beneath it. These numbers looked like some sort of coordinates.
At that moment, the walls of the room suddenly lit up, transforming into a massive screen displaying a world map.
I began inputting the coordinates from the dictionary onto the map. With each confirmed coordinate, a point would light up on the map. When I finished entering all the coordinates, these points formed a pattern.
It was a gigantic M, spanning across the entire globe!
I gasped in shock. What did this mean? Did Alphabet Society's influence really extend worldwide?
At that moment, a voice echoed from all directions:
"Congratulations, Matthew White. You have passed the first test."
I cautiously looked around, "Who are you? What does all this mean?"
"We are the Guardians, the protectors of the power of letters. And you, Matthew, are the chosen one. The blood that flows in you controls the essence of language."
"But why me?" I asked, confused.
"Because your name, your experiences, everything about you points to this mission. Now, you face a choice: join us and learn how to wield your abilities; or leave this room and pretend this never happened."
I fell silent. This choice was too heavy. If I chose to join, I might lose my current life; but if I chose to leave, I might regret it for the rest of my life.
"I need time to think," I finally said.
"Time is now, Matthew. Because in the world of language, every word, every letter can change the course of the world. And you are the one who can control this power."
I took a deep breath, knowing I had to make a choice. In this world built on words, I seemed to become a bridge connecting reality and mystery.
No matter what my choice was, I knew my life would be forever changed. But perhaps, this was my destiny. In this universe woven from 26 letters, I, Matthew White, might be the key to unlocking the ultimate puzzle.
"I choose..." I began slowly, my voice echoing in the empty room.
