Xu Qingyuan fell to the bottom of the well, and his last cry for help went unnoticed. However, that did not stop him from attempting to save himself.
The mermaid had him tightly bound, and in the pitch-black water of the well, he could see no direction at all. Moreover, there was neither light nor oxygen here.
Xu Qingyuan struggled desperately for a moment and finally managed to pull out one hand with great difficulty.
Unfortunately, just as he was about to draw his gun from behind him, the mermaid suddenly bit down on his neck.
He distinctly felt the sharp teeth of the mermaid pierce two blood holes near the shoulder area of his neck. A wave of intense pain surged through him, and then Xu Qingyuan's vision went dark as he lost consciousness.
After an unknown amount of time, when Xu Qingyuan opened his eyes again, three hours had passed since he was dragged underwater by the mermaid.
At this moment, it was already bright outside.
A ray of sunlight fell directly on Xu Qingyuan's upper body. He blinked his eyelashes slightly, feeling somewhat uncomfortable from the intense light.
However, what truly awakened him was the cross-shaped light refracted by the jewels.
Xu Qingyuan slowly sat up and discovered that he was in a strange cave that resembled a limestone cavern.
Looking around, he saw that the corners of the cave were piled high with treasures—various gems, pearls, and diamonds sparkling with dazzling brilliance, overwhelming to behold.
He was so stunned by this astonishing wealth that he couldn't speak; his mouth slightly agape and his eyes wide open.
The light from those jewels intertwined to create a dreamlike array of colors.
"This... this is simply unbelievable," Xu Qingyuan murmured to himself, unable to resist reaching out to touch the jewels.
Even though the Xu family was very wealthy, he had never seen so much jewelry before; it was piled up like a mountain.
At that moment, he felt a movement behind him.
The Mermaid appeared from behind, wrapping its strong arms tightly around his waist and abdomen, while its long tongue greedily licked at the exposed skin on the back of his neck.
Suddenly, as if recalling something terrifying, Xu Qingyuan shuddered, forcefully pushing the Mermaid away. He covered his neck with both hands and retreated in fear.
"Don't come any closer! You monster!" Xu Qingyuan shouted loudly.
After being pushed away, the Mermaid tilted its head, its eyes filled with confusion and curiosity, making a gurgling sound.
As Xu Qingyuan continued to back away, he kept a wary eye on the Mermaid. "What do you want from me?"
The Mermaid seemed to want to approach Xu Qingyuan but halted its movements due to his resistance.
Xu Qingyuan gasped for breath, looking around in an attempt to find an escape route.
A few rays of sunlight streamed into the cave; perhaps following this light would lead him out.
With a tense expression, Xu Qingyuan faced the Mermaid as he slowly backed away from the stone wall. After only a few steps, he suddenly realized that somehow his clothes had changed completely.
It couldn't have been this Mermaid that changed them, could it?!
Xu Qingyuan's face instantly turned pale.
This outfit fit him remarkably well; it was as if it had been tailor-made for him.
Xu Qingyuan furrowed his brows, not having time to think much. He kept a wary eye on the mermaid while slowly backing away.
The mermaid, seeing his movements, did not react aggressively. Instead, the corners of her mouth curled up in a strange smile that was difficult to decipher.
There was no standing water in the cave, and the mermaid's movements were slow and cumbersome, making this an excellent opportunity for him to escape.
He couldn't miss this chance!
With that thought, Xu Qingyuan took a deep breath, his gaze instantly becoming resolute. Without hesitation, he turned around and seized this rare opportunity, sprinting toward the cave entrance without looking back.
His footsteps quickened, creating a slight rush of wind.
Xu Qingyuan ran eagerly to the cave entrance but felt his heart sink as soon as he saw the scene before him.
Despair washed over him like a tidal wave as he realized that the cave was situated on a cliff by the sea.
Below him was the raging ocean, with waves crashing violently against the cliffside, producing a deafening roar as if they were going to swallow everything whole.
Xu Qingyuan's legs went weak, nearly collapsing to the ground.
In that moment of distraction, he felt the mermaid had somehow followed him and wrapped her arms around him from behind once more.
Xu Qingyuan could feel the mermaid's body pressed against his back; her cold and slippery touch sent chills down his spine.
He turned his head and saw the triumphant smile on the mermaid's face, which seemed to carry a hint of mockery and teasing.
He realized that something might be amiss.
Xu Qingyuan struggled desperately, trying to break free from the mermaid's grasp. "What do you want from me?"
The mermaid tightened her hold, making indistinct sounds while running her hands up and down his back, as if saying, "You need to behave."
Xu Qingyuan was both shocked and angry, the veins on his forehead bulging. "What are you trying to do?"
The mermaid glanced down at him but showed no sign of response; instead, she lifted him off the ground with a firm embrace.
Xu Qingyuan: "?"
He began to struggle violently.
"Let go of me!"
His frantic movements were so intense that the mermaid noticed several times he nearly brushed against the dangerous dorsal fin on her side.
Seeing Xu Qingyuan's disobedience, the mermaid decided to give his backside a playful slap.
Xu Qingyuan's face instantly turned red, and his ears flushed with embarrassment. He felt both humiliated and angry but ultimately had no choice but to endure and stop moving.
This male mermaid was massive, with a tail nearly four meters long; aside from the half-meter fin made of sheer fabric, the rest of its tail was as agile as a snake.
It seemed this was why he had been able to chase them all the way to the island throughout the night.
The mermaid held Xu Qingyuan and slowly swayed back, placing him once again on the stone bed.
Xu Qingyuan turned his head away from her, directing his gaze toward the jewels.
It was at this moment that Xu Qingyuan discovered that the stone walls inside these caves seemed to be adorned with murals similar to those he had seen on the stone walls of the forest the previous night.
Xu Qingyuan widened his eyes in surprise and began to observe carefully, forgetting about the small incident that had just occurred.
The lines of the murals were bold, and the colors were mottled, appearing to be better preserved than the ones he had seen earlier in the forest.
Xu Qingyuan's shift in focus puzzled the mermaid, who looked at his actions in confusion.
The mermaid leaned in, blocking Xu Qingyuan's view, prompting him to push its face away with a hand.
The murals here seemed to tell a story.
A group of people dressed in traditional attire from centuries ago knelt before a deity in the center of a circle formed by adults, their hands clasped together in prayer.
The image of the deity appeared vague and indistinct, with faint paint revealing only some outlines that resembled a serpentine creature. However, the upper half of its body took on a human form, reminiscent of characters from ancient myths of Country Z.
The mermaid felt a twinge of jealousy as it noticed that Xu Qingyuan seemed to be looking at those stone paintings. It then arched its tail and stood before him, looking down from above.
Suddenly, a massive shadow loomed over Xu Qingyuan.
He slowly raised his head and met the amber gaze of Ansheng.
