It was a rainy night.
The last bus slowly pulled over to the side of the road, and Ming Li dragged her weary body off the bus.
As the bus's taillights gradually disappeared into the darkness, she stood alone at the bus stop, sheltering from the rain. She looked up at the not-so-small curtain of rain in front of her, sighed helplessly, and reluctantly took out her folding umbrella from her bag, opening it and stepping into the rain.
She hated rainy days; whether wearing a raincoat or holding an umbrella, she always ended up soaked, making everything inconvenient.
She had stayed late at work today, and now, close to midnight, there were no pedestrians on the road except for the occasional whizzing vehicles.
Her apartment was a distance away from the bus stop. Although she had experience walking home at this hour, perhaps because of the rain, there was an inexplicable chill and eerie feeling in the air. Ming Li thought to herself as she took a deep breath to calm her nerves.
After walking leisurely for a while, she began to feel that something was off...
Though not very obvious, it seemed there was another set of footsteps besides her own?
Ming Li started to pay attention to that extra, jarring sound. The footsteps seemed deliberately synchronized with her pace, making both sounds almost overlap. If one didn't listen closely, it would be hard to distinguish between them—this realization made her instinctively alert.
...Was someone intentionally following her?
Thinking this, she deliberately slowed down her steps and then suddenly stopped and turned around—
She saw nothing but the dark road behind her, illuminated by the dim streetlights, appearing empty.
Ming Li widened her eyes and carefully scanned her surroundings, confirming that there were no hidden figures in the shadows before turning back around with a puzzled mind.
...Had she misheard?
After all, with the sound of the rain pouring down, any subtle noise should be hard to distinguish; how could she possibly differentiate it so clearly...
It must be her overthinking. Ming Li let out a quiet sigh.
However, just a few steps forward, she heard that sound again—the sound of water being drawn, almost identical to her own footsteps but not belonging to her.
She wasn't sure if it was an illusion, but this time the footsteps seemed closer to her...
Ming Li immediately stopped and turned around sharply—
There was still nothing behind her.
An indescribable chill surged from the soles of her feet up her spine. Without thinking, Ming Li turned and ran.
Even so, she could still clearly hear those footsteps following her like a shadow.
This time, as she ran, she looked back to confirm that there was truly no one behind her, yet that sound that didn’t belong to her continued to trail closely behind.
Was it an illusion? Was it because it was too dark and she was too scared that she mistook the sound of the rain for footsteps and frightened herself?
Though she kept trying to calm her panicked emotions, she still dared not slow down. It wasn't until she reached the entrance of her apartment building that she finally felt safe enough to stop.
Standing under the entrance light of the apartment building, Ming Li put down her umbrella and couldn't help but lean on her knees, gasping for breath.
It was nothing. She had confirmed that no one was following her; everything was just her overactive imagination... Ming Li kept repeating this to herself.
Until her breath finally calmed down a bit, her gaze suddenly fixated inexplicably on her calves, and an unsettling scene from a horror movie she had watched a few days ago involuntarily surfaced in her mind—
It was said that if you bent down and looked through your legs, you could see an existence not of this world...
Thinking of this, Ming Li couldn't help but force a smile.
No, no, no, that's just nonsense! After all, it's just a movie...
But she did hear those footsteps that seemed to follow her everywhere, and she indeed saw no one around...
Movies are all lies.
So... she just wanted to... confirm...
It shouldn't be... right?
As if tempted, Ming Li slightly parted her legs and slowly bent down—
There, right behind her heels, was a pair of muddy bare feet.
