"Mr. Yan, can you come and keep me company?"
Yan Jien was about to go to sleep when he suddenly received this message, momentarily taken aback.
It was sent by Yan Weila.
Why is she suddenly inviting me?
Yan Jien was a bit surprised but quickly replied, "Okay, I'll be there soon."
He got dressed and immediately left for Yan Weila's rented apartment.
Upon entering, he saw Yan Weila sitting on the sofa, her eyes red and tear-stained.
"What happened?" Yan Jien asked with a frown.
"I had a dream..." Yan Weila said softly.
"What dream?" Yan Jien inquired.
"My daughter had an asthma attack..." Yan Weila said, tears streaming down her face again.
"..." Yan Jien paused for a moment before asking, "Where is your daughter now?"
"Back home," Yan Weila replied. "She has been coughing for the past few days, and the medicine isn't working; she might need to be hospitalized again..."
"What is your daughter's condition?" Yan Jien asked.
"She has an allergic constitution, easily gets fevers and coughs, and has pharyngitis; she gets sick every month..." Yan Weila choked out.
"That does sound a bit troublesome," Yan Jien said.
"Yes," Yan Weila sighed. "When her grandmother takes care of her, she often smokes; the smell in the house is overwhelming. Dou Dou grew up in such an environment; how can her health be good?"
"How old is your daughter now?" Yan Jien asked.
"She just turned six this year," Yan Weila said.
"How about going to the hospital for a check-up?" Yan Jien suggested.
"Let's wait until the weekend..." Yan Weila sighed again.
"What if Dou Dou changes to a different living environment?" Yan Jien proposed again.
"I'm already looking," Yan Weila said helplessly, "but I haven't found a suitable place yet..."
"Your daughter's condition might be related to genetics," Yan Jien thought for a moment and said, "but it also has a lot to do with her living environment."
"What do you mean?" Yan Weila asked.
"For example, don't let her come into contact with smoke, and don't let her eat random things; these could trigger allergies," Yan Jien said. "Also, you can give her T Liquid; it should be effective."
" T Liquid?" Yan Weila looked confused.
" T Liquid is a medication I developed that can improve physical condition, but it hasn't been clinically tested yet, so I don't know if there are any side effects..." Yan Jien explained.
"Then give me some; I'll take it home for her," Yan Weila said quickly. "If it works, I'll bring more next time."
"I'll buy some Lab Mouse tonight to conduct an experiment. If the data looks good, when I go back home tomorrow, my parents and your daughter can all have some," Yan Jien said.
"Well... thank you," Yan Weila said gratefully.
"You're welcome," Yan Jien waved his hand dismissively.
After that, the two sat on the sofa in silence, and the atmosphere felt a bit heavy. Yan Jien glanced at the time; it was almost one in the morning.
"It's getting late; I should head back," Yan Jien said as he stood up. "You should get some rest too."
"Stay a little longer," Yan Weila said softly. "I'm quite scared being alone..."
"Okay," Yan Jien nodded.
The two went out to the balcony.
Yan Jien looked at the damaged invisible security screen and said, "This security screen is broken; it needs to be fixed soon."
"I contacted a repair company, but they said they're too busy lately and it'll take a few days..." Yan Weila replied helplessly.
"I'll call them again during the day to follow up," Yan Jien said.
"Alright," Yan Weila nodded.
"By the way, where is your hometown?" Yan Jien asked.
"In Chuan Dong Province, Suining City," Yan Weila replied.
"That's quite far," Yan Jien said. "On my way back this time, I'll pass through Suining City. Why don't you come with me? I can take you straight home."
"Really?" Yan Weila exclaimed in surprise.
"Of course," Yan Jien nodded.
"That's great!" Yan Weila said happily. "I was worried about taking leave tomorrow, but since you're driving me back, it's no problem now."
"Yeah," Yan Jien smiled.
They chatted for a while longer, and the atmosphere gradually became more relaxed.
Yan Jien looked at the time and said, "It's getting late; I should head back."
"Stay a little longer," Yan Weila said softly.
"Okay," Yan Jien nodded.
The two returned to the living room and sat on the sofa.
Yan Jien gazed at Yan Weila's delicate, fair face and inhaled her faint fragrance, causing his heart to race again.
He quickly took a deep breath to calm himself down.
"Mr. Yan, are you... afraid of me?" Yan Weila suddenly asked.
"No," Yan Jien shook his head. "I just feel that my actions might cause you some trouble..."
"I'm fine," Yan Weila said softly. "I've gotten used to it over the years..."
"I'm sorry..." Yan Jien apologized.
"You don't need to apologize," Yan Weila shook her head and said, "You're a good person; you've helped me a lot, and I'm very grateful."
"I'm not as good as you think," Yan Jien said with a bitter smile. "I'm a mutant monster; I'm even afraid of myself..."
"How could that be? I think you're quite exceptional," Yan Weila replied.
"I used to think I was exceptional too, which is why I could never find a girlfriend," Yan Jien self-deprecatingly said. "Later I realized I'm a mutant; what girl would want to date someone like me?"
"..." Yan Weila fell silent.
"In Nanquan City, besides me, there's another mutant human," Yan Jien continued, "but I don't want to talk about her now; maybe another time."
"Okay," Yan Weila nodded.
"It really is getting late; I need to go back," Yan Jien said. "I'll contact you before I leave tomorrow."
"I'll see you off," Yan Weila quickly got up.
"No need; you should get some rest," Yan Jien waved his hand.
"Then I won't see you off," Yan Weila said, "but have another cup of tea."
"No thanks..." Yan Jien shook his head.
"Just one more cup," Yan Weila tugged at Yan Jien's arm, acting cute.
"Alright then," Yan Jien had no choice but to sit down again.
