This time, Yan Jien did not fall into a deep sleep after losing control and overeating like before; instead, he woke up shortly after. He remembered everything that had happened, as if he had played a first-person slaughter game, and now the game was over.
Looking at Professor Fang's remains, Yan Jien felt a bit shocked.
"Buzz..." His phone vibrated.
Yan Jien took out his phone; it was a call from Yan Weila.
"How are you?" Yan Weila's anxious voice came through the line.
"I'm fine, don't worry," Yan Jien replied, coughing slightly.
"Then I'll come down to get you," Yan Weila said.
"No need, it's inconvenient for you to bring Dou Dou. Just wait for me here; I'll be up in a bit," Yan Jien refused.
"Alright, just be careful," Yan Weila reminded him.
After hanging up the phone, Yan Jien struggled to stand up, but the movement pulled at his wounds, causing him to gasp in pain. He checked his body and found that the wounds were still oozing blood; he probably woke up too early and had not regained his self-healing ability yet.
"It seems I have to wait a bit longer," Yan Jien thought helplessly.
Earlier, he had entered a state of uncontrolled frenzy, his consciousness clouded, retaining only the instincts for killing and eating while blocking out the pain from his injuries. Now that he was awake, he suddenly felt pain all over his body.
"Awoo..." A wolf howl echoed from a distance.
Yan Jien frowned slightly; had Professor Fang's subordinates come looking for him? He felt worried; given his current condition, if he encountered enemies, it would likely end badly for him.
"Buzz..." The phone vibrated again.
"Are you coming up?" Yan Weila's concerned voice came through the call.
"Not yet; has Dou Dou fallen asleep?" Yan Jien asked.
"Not yet; she's crying and asking for you," Yan Weila replied with fatigue in her tone.
"Tell her I'll be back soon," Yan Jien said.
"Okay," Yan Weila responded.
After hanging up the phone, Yan Jien felt anxious; in his current state, he couldn't move at all—was he going to have to spend the night here?
"Buzz..." The phone vibrated once more.
It was still a call from Yan Weila.
"I thought about it and decided to come down to find you," Yan Weila said.
"Don't, it's inconvenient for you to bring Dou Dou," Yan Jien quickly stopped her.
"What should I do then?" Yan Weila asked.
"You take Dou Dou back first, I'll be back soon," Yan Jien said.
"No way, I can't leave you here alone," Yan Weila firmly disagreed.
"Dou Dou is hungry; you take her back to eat, and I'll be back shortly," Yan Jien persuaded.
"But..." Yan Weila still hesitated.
"Don't worry, I'm fine," Yan Jien reassured her.
"Alright then," Yan Weila finally agreed.
After hanging up the phone, Yan Jien breathed a sigh of relief.
The reason he insisted on not letting Yan Weila come down was mainly because he was afraid of scaring Dou Dou. After all, Dou Dou was just a child; seeing him in his current state would surely leave a psychological scar.
Yan Jien lay on the ground, waiting silently.
About half an hour later, the bleeding finally stopped.
Yan Jien endured the pain and stood up. Although the bleeding had ceased, the wound was deep, and any slight movement caused intense pain.
"Sigh..." Yan Jien sighed and limped down the mountain.
Although he was severely injured, he could still manage to move.
Yan Jien dared not linger; he worried that Professor Fang's men would catch up with him.
After a difficult journey, Yan Jien finally returned to the city area.
It was already late at night, and there were few vehicles on the street.
Yan Jien hailed a cab and returned home.
"How are you?" Yan Weila came over, looking at Yan Jien's disheveled appearance with great concern.
"I'm fine," Yan Jien shook his head.
"How did you get hurt like this?" Yan Weila's eyes turned red.
"It's a long story," Yan Jien smiled bitterly.
"Sit down; I'll help you run a bath," Yan Weila helped Yan Jien to the sofa and then turned to go into the bathroom.
Yan Jien watched Yan Weila's busy figure and felt a warmth rise in his heart.
Before long, Yan Weila finished preparing the water and helped Yan Jien into the bathroom. After taking a shower, Yan Weila dried Yan Jien's body and applied ointment. By the time everything was done, it was nearly two in the morning.
"You've suffered," Yan Weila said, gently stroking Yan Jien's cheek.
"It's my fault for dragging you and Dou Dou into this," Yan Jien replied apologetically.
"Don't say that; you did it to save us," Yan Weila shook her head.
"By the way, how did that guy end up like that?" Yan Weila suddenly asked.
"I’m not sure; he might be some kind of mutated creature," Yan Jien frowned.
"Mutated creature?" Yan Weila was surprised.
"Yeah, I suspect there might be other mutated creatures in this world," Yan Jien nodded.
"Doesn't that mean we could be in danger at any moment?" Yan Weila said fearfully.
"Don't worry; I will protect you," Yan Jien said, holding Yan Weila's delicate hand.
"Okay." Yan Weila gently nodded and leaned against Yan Jien's shoulder. The two embraced and fell asleep without a word.
The next morning, when Yan Jien woke up, he found that his wounds had scabbed over, and his self-healing ability was slowly recovering.
"It seems that as long as I'm not dead, my self-healing ability will always be there," Yan Jien thought to himself.
"You're awake?" Yan Weila beside him also opened her eyes.
"Yeah," Yan Jien nodded.
"I'll go make you breakfast," Yan Weila said.
"What about Dou Dou?" Yan Jien asked.
"Still sleeping," Yan Weila replied.
"Oh." Yan Jien responded and picked up his phone to check the news.
"Today's headlines: A man in Youjiang City lost control and bit a drunken man to death..."
"Another case of losing control?" Yan Jien's pupils constricted.
