As soon as I heard, I became anxious and hurriedly leaned over to look at the place on his phone, but he had already put it away.
"Where are you going? We're not here for tourism; we're looking for Mina. I have a feeling something is off with her right now..."
Before I could finish my sentence, Xiao Minxing's hand grasped mine.
We were both sitting in the back seat, and because I was feeling very nervous, my fingers and even my whole body were slightly trembling, with a chill continuously rising from my heart.
However, his hand was very warm. When his large hand covered mine, it enveloped my entire palm, and warmth slowly spread from that point to my heart, calming me down gradually.
His voice was calm, and he looked at me steadily for a few seconds before softly saying, "There's something suspicious about this. We can't rashly go to the place indicated by the other party; we need to find a way to contact the local police."
I could already understand what he meant, so I asked, "Then what address did you give the driver?"
"The nearest police station to the address he mentioned," Xiao Minxing replied.
Almost as he expected, after we arrived at the police station and reported the relevant information, mentioning what that person had said about the police station, they immediately made a call. Soon they confirmed that they hadn't received any such case in the past two days and hadn't heard of any girl with the surname Mina.
The situation quickly reached a conclusion: the person who called us was a scammer. But how did he get Mina's phone? And where had Mina gone became a mystery.
The police told us not to panic and to go to the address given by the scammer. They would send someone to follow us discreetly to see what the other party intended to do. To prevent Mina from being in danger with them, I needed to act as weak as possible so as not to attract their attention.
The police analyzed that there should be more than just my number in Mina's phone, and since that person specifically called me, it indicated that they were at least targeting women by name. Therefore, we needed to cooperate with him on the surface.
They even suggested that Xiao Minxing should not follow and let me go alone.
Before the police could finish speaking, Xiao Minxing directly said, "No way! I must go with her. Even if your analysis is correct, it's not suspicious for a girl traveling far away to be with her husband, especially in such an urgent matter. Besides, if that person is truly deranged, what will you do if you let her go alone?"
The police were somewhat taken aback by his righteous demeanor but ultimately compromised and said, "Alright then, but you must ensure that when you see the other party, you don't act rashly. It's best to stall him while we handle the rest."
After reaching an agreement, Xiao Minxing and I got into a car specially arranged by the police heading towards the address provided by that person. A police car followed us from a distance with officers inside.
I sat restlessly in the car, torn between the fear of where we were going and the worry that Mina might be in trouble.
Xiao Minxing, however, was surprisingly calm. One of his hands was still clasped with mine, while the other hand was constantly swiping on his phone, checking the location one moment and contacting someone the next.
The car twisted and turned before stopping at the entrance of a narrow alley where the taxi couldn't go any further, so we had no choice but to get out.
Since I had been keeping in touch with Mina over the phone, they instructed us to walk straight down the alley, which would require a turn at the end.
This place looked somewhat frightening; both sides were lined with dilapidated houses, and there were very few people around. The alley was about ten meters long. As we walked from one end to the other, aside from occasionally seeing clothes hanging out to dry from a two-story building, we didn't see a single person.
The deeper we went, the more scared I became, and I leaned closer to Xiao Minxing.
He, on the other hand, seemed invigorated by such an environment. Every cell in his body radiated a fighting spirit; his eyes were sharp like an eagle's as he scanned the surroundings. One arm held me tightly while his other hand was tucked into his pocket.
At the end of the alley, there was indeed a turn to the right. Following the information provided by our contact, we turned right onto an even narrower and deeper path. The ground was uneven with many puddles that required us to navigate carefully.
My palms were sweaty, my throat felt dry, and my voice came out hoarse as I managed to ask Xiao Minxing, “Are those police reliable? Why aren’t they following us in? This place is really scary.”
He lowered his head and leaned close to my ear, saying, “They know this area better; they've already entered from another side. You don’t need to be afraid; I’m here with you.”
His arm tightened around me, almost lifting me off my feet and pressing me against him. His strength and voice provided immense comfort, calming my heart significantly.
We soon stopped in front of a small building. The front door was made of rusty steel bars, allowing us to see inside from outside.
There wasn't a single person in the yard. Clothes were hanging on both the second and third floors, but the first floor was severely dilapidated; some rooms didn’t even have doors.
Xiao Minxing asked me to call our contact and let them know we had arrived.
On the other end, they quickly said, “Come in and go up to the third floor.”
Following their instructions, I pushed open a door on the third floor and was taken aback. Inside stood three or four men, all bare-chested, with tattoos on their backs and arms that looked particularly intimidating.
Xiao Minxing tightened his grip, pulling me back, but another door in the row of rooms opened, and two people walked out calmly, blocking our escape.
I didn't dare to move; I was scared no matter where I looked, and I couldn't even think about what Mina might be going through right now.
Xiao Minxing kept one hand protecting me while the other remained in his pocket.
I noticed that those people seemed more interested in the hand that he hadn't revealed. Since we entered, they hadn't said much, but a few of them were staring at his hand.
Even so, we were at a disadvantage; there were too many of them, and they had already surrounded us in the room from both sides.
Xiao Minxing spoke first, asking where Mina was.
One of the group responded; it sounded like the person who had called us. He calmly said that she was in their hands and demanded money from us.
Xiao Minxing nodded, as if he had anticipated this outcome, and directly asked how much they wanted.
They discussed the price like two merchants negotiating a deal, deliberately ignoring the danger we were in. My heart was almost in my throat as I kept glancing around.
The room was a combination of two rooms; inside there were only a few iron-frame beds and some scattered kitchen utensils. There wasn't even a closet; dirty clothes hung haphazardly in the corners or were piled on the floor.
There was no way to hide anyone in this room. Of course, they could be in another room. The most terrifying part was that we didn't know how many of them there were. This row of houses had five or six rooms; if each one had someone in it, then it wouldn't just be us two in trouble. Even if all the police came, whether they could rescue Mina was still uncertain.
