I desperately told myself to hold on. If Xiao Minxing found out about this plan, not only would nothing get done, but he might even kill me first.
He was so domineering that he wouldn't tolerate anyone trying to scheme or manipulate him. Even in the Xiao Family Ancestral Home, he could disregard the carefully laid plans of others and walk away without a second thought. To him, I was merely a woman he could use, and I certainly couldn't exceed his control.
My toes were lifted off the ground, my body stretched for a long time, and the force he used to grip my chin made it hard for me to breathe, causing my eyes to sting.
But I didn't say a word and didn't dare to look into his eyes. I lowered my gaze, focusing on the tip of my nose in the light.
Finally, Xiao Minxing released his grip.
Just as my legs touched the ground, I started to fall again but was caught by him in time. I felt his warm fingertip brush against the corner of my eye, as if something wet was being wiped away.
I looked up at Xiao Minxing. His face was as dark as the sky before a heavy rain, and his gaze had long since withdrawn.
After a long while, he said, "If you can stand, go eat."
I made an effort to straighten up and watched him head to the dining room first. Only then did I let out a long sigh and touch my still-painful chin as I followed him.
The meal was tasteless for both of us. Despite my efforts to shove food into my mouth, I couldn't tell what I was chewing; it felt like wax—bland and hard to swallow.
Xiao Minxing also showed little interest. He didn't bother with pretense; after just a couple of bites, he threw his chopsticks onto the table and turned his face to look out at the night.
We got home around nine o'clock. He ignored me and went straight to take a shower and sleep.
But I couldn't sleep at all. I felt like my soul had left my body, my mind cluttered with various thoughts, none of which made any sense. Just then, my Mobile Phone rang.
Although it was a very small ringtone, it still startled me in the extremely quiet room.
I almost jumped out of my chair and picked up the phone without even looking at the number.
On the other end was a man. After he said several sentences, I finally realized it was Lu Yi Heng.
His tone was very calm, but it carried a strong sense of confusion: "I know you met Yishan today. What exactly happened? Does Xiao Minxing know?"
I steadied my nerves before replying, "It's nothing much, just a chat between women. I've already told you, there's no need for him to know everything."
Lu Yi Heng paused for a moment on the other end, and when he spoke again, his tone had changed to one that was solemn and serious: "Mrs. Xiao, I don't know what exactly happened between you two, but I want to advise you on one thing: he really can't handle any more stress, so please think carefully about your actions."
This statement gave me a slight fondness for Lu Yi Heng; at least as a friend, he genuinely cared for Xiao Minxing.
It also confirmed my previous thoughts: his condition was serious and had worsened due to stress, which had a lot to do with me.
"I understand, thank you for your reminder." My tone was polite yet distant.
I didn't want to have any entanglements with the Lu family. It wouldn't be long before they would have an even better relationship with Xiao Minxing. I didn't need to worry about these things at all, and I would distance myself from their lives. Therefore, there was no need to distract myself dealing with insignificant people during this brief time.
However, after hanging up the phone, I found it a bit strange.
My phone had never informed him; only Lu Yishan knew. How did he find out?
Could it be that Lu Yishan had already told him about our plan?
If that's the case, then there's nothing to be done. With Xiao Minxing's personality, once he finds out about this, the sky will surely change color, right?
The more I thought about it, the more terrifying it became. I hurriedly grabbed my mobile phone and called Lu Yishan again.
She picked up quickly, but it was so noisy on the other end that I couldn't hear what she was saying. It seemed like she was in a bar or some similar place; the music and chatter were so loud that communication was impossible.
I had no choice but to hang up and sat alone by the window in a daze.
However, Lu Yishan was even more formidable than I had imagined. I even regretted reaching out to her, but once the arrow is shot, there’s no turning back.
She had already entered the Xiao Family openly and without hesitation.
The next afternoon, before Xiao Minxing got off work, Lu Yishan actually showed up at our door with a bunch of bags.
I almost thought my eyes were playing tricks on me. If we hadn't agreed beforehand, I would have wanted to grab a stick and chase her away.
Once she came in, she dumped her things in the living room and said, "Prepare a room for me."
I stared at her in disbelief and asked, "What did you say?"
She even rolled her eyes at me and said, "Didn't you say you needed my help? Now that I'm here, go prepare a room for me."
I really felt like this girl was incredibly clueless; she seemed more out of it than I was.
"Are you okay? Do you realize what you're doing? Do you think Xiao Minxing won't know? Do you believe he'll just kick you out when he comes back? If you're coming over, you need a legitimate excuse for him to bring it up himself. Do you think this is a hotel where anyone can just come and stay?"
I tried to speak to her in a better tone, but I just couldn't control myself.
Lu Yishan still looked unconvinced: "Do you know who Xiao Minxing is? He's been in the business world for so many years; what kind of tricks hasn't he seen? The more you try to outsmart him, the worse it will be for you. On the contrary, this kind of nonchalant attitude may seem thoughtless, but it's exactly what he likes, and it will definitely keep him in check."
I didn't quite believe it; after all, Lu Yishan and Xiao Minxing were old acquaintances. They used to be so close, so she should know him better than I do, right?
Maybe she was right. With Xiao Minxing's intelligence, playing tricks under his nose would be like walking into a trap. However, if this woman was here as his friend's sister and ex-girlfriend for a couple of days, and she was already here, he probably wouldn't throw her things out.
She just wanted me to clean her room? Dream on.
"You should just wait here for him to come back. Whether or not you can stay is another matter; let's not disturb the peace of the room."
After saying that, I went back upstairs. Even though we were teaming up for Xiao Minxing's sake, it wasn't for her, so there was no need to please her.
Lu Yishan wasn't unfamiliar with this place; she must have come here often before.
After I went upstairs, I heard the TV in the living room turn on downstairs at a loud volume. As for what this young lady was doing, I had no interest in checking.
My feelings were extremely conflicted; I hoped that when Xiao Minxing returned and saw her, he would kick her out, yet I also hoped he would let her stay. If that happened, my position here would become increasingly smaller.
Thinking about this made me smile bitterly.
In the Xiao Family, when did I ever have a position?
