Xiao Minhui was silent for a moment on the other end, and in the end, she didn't tell me what it was about. Instead, she said, "Let's talk tomorrow. There are indeed some things I need to discuss with you, but it's better to do it in person."
After hanging up the phone, Mina came over and asked me, "When did you get so close to Eldest Sister Xiao?"
I shook my head and said, "I find it strange too. I don't even know her phone number. How close could we possibly be?"
She looked at me thoughtfully for a while before saying, "It seems things are a bit complicated. This woman is somewhat shrewd. If you're really going to meet her, I suggest you inform Xiao Minxing in advance, or I can just accompany you."
My view of Eldest Sister Xiao was different from hers. In the few encounters we had, especially the last time at the Xiao Family, she bluntly mentioned Xiao Minxing's illness, which ended up being quite awkward. Neither Xiao Minfeng nor Xiao Minying spoke up. In the end, she stayed behind but didn't get Old Master Xiao to agree to her request.
From this perspective, she wasn't as shrewd as imagined; perhaps among the siblings, she was one of the more naive ones.
Of course, it could also be that she had her own motives, which made her vulnerable. If she didn't need anything at all, she probably wouldn't care about anything either.
Mina interrupted my thoughts and asked, "What's wrong? Did you think of something?"
I shook my head and said, "No, but she's not as intimidating as I thought. I'll just go meet her tomorrow."
Mina looked at me for a while before saying, "That's fine; you can handle it however you want. But you mentioned you already made plans with someone today. Who is it? Your situation is special now; I worry for you when you go out."
"It's not as serious as you say, right? If that's the case, should I just stay in your little building and not go out?" I smiled at her.
Mina remained noncommittal: "At least until this matter is properly handled, try to go out as little as possible. What if you run into Xiao Minxing again? If he acts out of anger and does something rash, no amount of regret will help afterward, right?"
The two of us chatted while having breakfast. After Mina left for work, I tidied myself up a bit and waited for the time I had arranged with Su Qian.
Around ten o'clock, he called and said he was downstairs at Mina's place and asked me to come down.
Once I got into the car, I deliberately looked into his eyes. They were bright and full of life, and his complexion was good—no signs of fatigue from staying up late—which was quite surprising.
Su Qian smiled and asked me, "What's wrong? Is there something on my face?"
I felt a bit embarrassed by his question and lowered my head to say, "It's just that it's rare to see someone looking as good as you do. I'm just curious; you seem to often stay up late. How come you still look so energetic?"
Su Qian turned his head to glance at me and said, "There’s a secret to this. Do you want me to tell you?"
Without suspicion, I nodded immediately and said, "Sure, then I won’t have to worry about staying up late making me old. I can sleep whenever I want."
He laughed even more at this, his mouth stretching into a grin that revealed his beautiful white teeth.
After a while, he said, "You can’t stay up late right now. Not just for yourself, but also for the little one. And your health isn’t great to begin with—have you forgotten what the Doctor said? You need to take care of yourself and worry less."
His eyes were focused on the road ahead as he continued speaking, each word and sentence gentle and caring. Occasionally, he would turn to look at me with a warm smile.
This calm and peaceful atmosphere had never existed between me and Xiao Minxing.
He was always too intense; whenever I was with him, I was mostly tense and could never relax. But Su Qian was different. No matter how nervous I felt, it seemed that being with him allowed me to slowly unwind.
At first, I thought he might really have some psychological skills that made him good at conversation. But gradually, I realized it wasn’t like that at all; he carried an aura that made people feel at ease. It wasn’t just me—others felt the same way. As long as they were willing to sit down and chat with him, they would quickly find themselves feeling happy.
A person like this is rare to find, even if it’s just as a friend.
When I looked at Su Qian again, he happened to glance over as well. Our eyes met in the air before he naturally turned back to the road ahead and asked me, "Where do you want to go for a walk? I don’t think I’ve ever asked for your opinion before; today is an exception—ladies first."
Since moving into Mina's house, I had become particularly lazy. On most days, not only did I avoid walking, but even sitting for long periods made me feel tired; all I wanted was to lie around all day.
But deep down, I knew this wasn’t good for my condition. The problem was that my knowledge of places in Haicheng was quite limited, so I could only look at Su Qian and say, "I’ll go with whatever you decide; I don’t know where’s good."
He smiled and said, "Alright then, as long as you listen to me, things will be easy."
I found it a bit strange; we had come out to discuss matters, yet after meeting up, Su Qian didn’t ask a single question. It felt like we were just out for fun today; he wasn’t in a hurry to know why I suddenly made such a decision.
Feeling anxious myself, I spoke up first: "So, about what happened last night—do you have any thoughts on it?"
At this point, we were already in Central Park in Haicheng—not an especially luxurious place but full of life. There were many elderly people and children enjoying their time under the sun in groups of three or five.
Su Qian and I walked along the path deeper into the flower beds and woods. It was relatively quiet here, but because there was less sunlight reaching this area, it felt somewhat cool.
He took off his coat and handed it to me, saying, "Put it on a bit, don't catch a chill."
I looked at him, noticing he only had a thin shirt underneath, and shook my head, saying, "I'm fine, it's not cold. You should put it back on."
He didn't say anything more; instead, he shook the coat open and draped it over my shoulders, saying, "Do you know why even when the weather isn't too cold, a man should still wear a coat when going out?"
I was still thinking about the question I had asked him earlier that hadn't been answered, so when I heard his question, I turned to look at him in confusion.
Su Qian smiled and said, "It's just a chance to show some courtesy at this moment."
My face felt inexplicably warm as I turned my head to the side.
Although I knew he was just joking, I still felt a strange sensation inside.
Fortunately, he didn't continue down that path but instead returned to my earlier question: "After what you said last night, I've thought about it carefully. However, before talking to Xiao Zong, I want to ask you something first."
I immediately asked, "What is it?"
Su Qian stopped walking and looked directly into my eyes as he asked, "Do you know anything about Xiao Zong?"
This question wasn't difficult at all. Without much thought, I replied, "Not really. Even though we... are married, being together always feels awkward. I don't even know why; it's like two fireballs that can never merge together—when they come together, they just explode."
