The next morning, I first went to the library and quickly selected a few books I needed. It was only after I rushed out that I remembered Ye Guang was still ill and might not come at all.
It's somewhat sad for people sometimes. If Ye Guang hadn't said those things to me, if his mother hadn't approached me in that way, as a friend, I should have gone to see him regardless of everything. In fact, when we studied together in the past, I always thought he was quite a decent person. But now, because of all this, I can only force myself to be cold-hearted.
On the other hand, if it weren't for these issues, perhaps he wouldn't have fallen ill? Keeping my distance from him isn't necessarily a bad thing; he's just a passerby in my life who will eventually disappear. It's better to withdraw early and give him back his peaceful time.
There were still many things to do in the morning, but since I hadn't slept well last night, I started to get a headache after returning from the bookstore.
At first, I tried to tough it out, but as time went on, the pain intensified. Eventually, I couldn't hold on any longer and had to get up and walk around the room.
It was at this moment that Mina called me and seriously brought up yesterday's matter again—finding a nanny.
I pressed my temples and replied, "Didn't we discuss this yesterday? I've already told you the reason; why are you bringing it up again today?"
She sighed deeply on the other end and said, "The more I think about it, the more inappropriate it seems. You are now a pregnant woman, and a working one at that. If you don't think of yourself, you should think of your child. With your current lifestyle, you're so busy that you even skip meals. What if your child ends up malnourished when they arrive? By then, it will be too late for you to cry."
I really didn't want to argue with her any further; my headache was getting worse. But Mina continued without stopping, as if she had a mission to sell me on hiring a nanny.
After about ten minutes of her relentless persuasion, this workplace elite managed to wear me down. I weakly said, "Fine then, but I'm not free to go today. How about you accompany me this weekend to check out the Housekeeping Company?"
Mina immediately agreed and promptly hung up.
I truly couldn't sit still any longer and got up to go back to my room to sleep.
This nap was deep and lasted long enough that when I woke up, it was already dark outside.
There were two missed calls on my phone—one from Su Qian and another from an unknown number.
As I sat on the bed waking up, I scrolled through my phone considering whether or not to call back.
Since divorcing Xiao Minxing, my contact with Su Qian had become very rare. Many times I even forgot he existed in my life. When I thought about it again, I felt guilty for having used him before.
Perhaps Su Qian genuinely wanted to help me; it was just that I overthought things.
Although he was known as a notorious playboy, he had shown friendship towards me. That alone is worth being grateful for.
Thinking of this, I called back, but the phone rang for a long time without anyone answering, until it hung up by itself.
I didn’t mind; he was always very busy, especially at night. It should be normal for him not to answer or not hear the phone ring.
I got up and started washing up, then heated some milk and bread from the fridge, taking them directly to the Study Room to eat while looking at the books I had bought during the day.
When that unfamiliar number called again, it was already past eight in the evening.
I had slept most of the day and felt energized at night. I also felt a new inspiration for the painting in my hands, so I hurried my movements, trying to draw everything I had thought of as quickly as possible.
So when I saw an unfamiliar number on my Mobile Phone, I didn’t pay much attention. I just glanced at it and put my Mobile Phone down on the table to continue with what I was doing.
However, this time my Mobile Phone kept ringing. Even though I had set it to vibrate, the buzzing sound on the table was still quite loud, and I eventually had to answer it.
To my surprise, it was Guan Mingyue's voice.
I immediately tensed up. As soon as I recognized her voice, I blurted out, “Dr. Guan, why are you calling me? Is something wrong with Xiao Minxing again? Where is he now? Is he still at your Hospital? I'll go over right away.”
Guan Mingyue's voice was relatively calm. She waited until I finished speaking before replying, “It's not him; it's Su Qian.”
“Ah?” It took me a moment to process this twist. Although I had seen Su Qian call her before and thought they might have known each other for a long time, hearing her say Su Qian's name still felt strange.
Most importantly, I didn’t know what had happened to Su Qian or why she was calling me.
Guan Mingyue didn’t say directly but asked if I could come to the Hospital.
I put down what I was holding and talked to her while changing my shoes. After grabbing my keys from the Entrance, I headed outside.
However, as soon as I reached the parking lot downstairs, I unexpectedly saw Xiao Minxing there.
He must have just arrived; he was still standing by his car door. When he saw me, he frowned slightly and walked over.
Even after such a long time apart, facing him made me feel nervous.
I tightly gripped my bag and watched him approach step by step, almost breaking into a sweat.
But Xiao Minxing's expression was strange. He initially looked unhappy when he saw me, even showing some impatience and resentment. However, after walking up to me, his face became much calmer, and his tone wasn’t as forceful as before.
He glanced at the bag in my hand and said, "Are you going out?"
I nodded.
He lightly said, "Hmm," and added, "Let's go. I'll take you so you won't have to come back for anything later."
I felt a bit flushed and secretly looked at him, but he just stepped aside to let me pass, neither rushing to head back nor pushing me to go.
I wanted to refuse; after all, it was about Su Qian, and I still didn't know what it was about. What if he just wanted to invite me out for a meal with Guan Mingyue or something else?
Wouldn't that be asking for trouble in front of Xiao Minxing?
Even though it seemed like my relationships were none of his business, I knew better than anyone how much he meant to me and that I couldn't completely disregard him, so I stood there, unable to move.
But Xiao Minxing didn't give me a chance. After waiting a few seconds, seemingly having exhausted his patience, he reached over and took my bag, walking directly toward his car.
I had no choice but to hurry a few steps to catch up and then remembered to ask him, "How did you end up here?"
Xiao Minxing had already opened the car door for me. As I got in, he casually said, "Just taking a stroll."
Before I could ask anything else, he closed the door and got in from the other side, driving the car away.
