Thinking of this, I stood up from the low couch and said, "Sorry to disturb you. It's fine now, and you're busy too, so you should go back and rest early."
He didn't say much and immediately got up, picking up one of my clothes from the hanger and asking, "Aren't you going to see me off?"
I wanted to refuse in my heart, but seeing him off was better than continuing to argue with him here, so I said a word to Jin Ke and followed him out.
Once outside, Xiao Minxing draped the clothes over my shoulders and casually wrapped his arm around mine as we walked towards the elevator.
When the door opened, he pulled me inside without caring about my panic, his eyes focused on the descending elevator button.
The elevator went straight down to the underground garage, and he didn't let go of me but led me directly to the car.
I finally couldn't hold back anymore and clung to the car door, asking him, "Where are you taking me?"
Xiao Minxing didn't answer but glanced at the car door and said, "Close the door."
"I won't. You have to tell me where we're going; otherwise, I'm getting out right now." This kind of stubbornness rarely happened between us, so he paused for a moment before softening his voice, saying, "I'm taking you home to have a look."
This sentence seemed to come from deep within his throat—hoarse, low, yet soft. After saying that, he didn't let me close the door; instead, he leaned over towards me, his body crossing mine as he reached out to pull the car door shut and quickly drove away from the parking lot.
On the way to his home, neither of us spoke again; the atmosphere in the car was unusual.
I hadn't been back since the divorce and hadn't even come here to see it. Sometimes I really wanted to come and check out where he lived and how he lived at home. However, I was also afraid of seeing him, and this place was unpleasant for me. Just thinking about it would remind me of everything that happened here—the painful memories and our past of mutual torment.
Inside, there was no change at all; it was spotless. I didn't know if Xiao Minxing cleaned it himself or hired a cleaning service.
However, his personality was strange; he always hated strangers coming into his home and disliked others touching his things. So no matter how tired I was back then, I was the only one who tidied up here.
He placed a cushion on the back of the sofa and sat down next to me after I settled in. He said, "Just take a look; I'm planning to sell this place."
"Ah? Why?" I asked anxiously, unable to grasp his thought process again.
Xiao Minxing frowned as he looked around and said, "Probably because this place is filled with bad memories. Maybe if we change locations, people will be a bit happier."
It truly is a meeting of minds; the thoughts I had when I arrived are now being voiced by him. If this is really the reason, then I find it hard to persuade him otherwise. After all, I haven't been happy here, and he hasn't been much better off; otherwise, why would he be sick from stress?
"Then if you sold it, where will you live?" I asked.
Xiao Minxing suddenly smiled and said, "How about living with you?"
"Ah..." That was about the only reaction I could muster.
But he seemed to be in a playful mood, continuing to look at me and say, "I have no place to stay. Is it really too much trouble for you to take me in, considering our past friendship?"
"It's not too much trouble... I..."
"If it's not too much trouble, does that mean you agree?" Xiao Min interrupted my words with a question.
I was left speechless by his tactics. The most confusing part was not understanding why he suddenly had such a good mood to talk about this.
To be honest, if Xiao Minxing insisted on living with me, I wouldn't have a choice. Even though we are no longer together, that house originally belonged to him. It seemed like deep down, I didn't have the strength to stop him either. In situations like this, it usually ends in compromise.
He just changed the way he spoke to me, leaving me unsure of how to respond.
But if I agreed just like that, wouldn’t it mean I still had feelings for him? Although everyone knows this fact, the issues from the past would resurface again.
If I disagreed, I would feel particularly uncomfortable.
I was in a dilemma while he wasn’t. He continued the conversation: "Others have already come to see the house; it seems suitable. It might be sold soon, so you should take some time to move your remaining things out."
"I don't have anything left! When we... you know... I took everything with me," I hurriedly said.
Xiao Minxing looked at me and asked, "What do you mean by 'you know'?"
I had no choice but to mention the divorce again, as if reminding him of our relationship. So Xiao Minxing directly said, "Right, during the divorce, I remember you only took one suitcase and one bag. But you clearly have a lot of clothes, shoes, and jewelry in your bedroom. Are you really not taking any of those?"
"Those aren't mine..."
"Whose is that? If you don't want it, I won't take it either. Just leave it in this house; the new owner can handle it however they wish."
He said this without a care, not even changing his gaze.
It was as if those jewels and clothes he had spent so much money on were just a pile of trash, easily discarded.
I was different from him; I was greedy and reluctant to part with them, so I felt a pang of regret and could only say, "Alright then, I'll come by with Jin Ke to pick them up tomorrow."
Xiao Minxing nodded and said, "Okay, I'll help you call a car tomorrow, but there's a condition for the exchange."
I was almost dizzy from his words and turned to look at him weakly, only to see that Xiao Minxing's eyes were filled with amusement.
It was truly a rare sight; such a deep smile in his eyes. Even when we lived together every day in the past, I had never seen it, let alone after we went our separate ways and hadn't seen each other for a long time.
He waved his hand in front of my eyes and said, "I've bought my new house too, it's in the same Community where you live, seems like it's even in the same building. So tomorrow you can help me check it out as well. You should take over what you need to take over beforehand. Also, I think Jin Ke is quite good; why not give her some extra money to take care of both homes?"
Oh my, I had no idea where he got such an idea from; the more I listened, the chillier it felt.
There are so many houses in Haicheng and so many Communities. With his current capabilities, shouldn't he be living in a villa? At least somewhere more upscale? Why would he want to live together with me? And have my nanny take care of him? It was just too peculiar.
But when I stammered out my thoughts, he directly shook his head and said, "I found that the feng shui of that Community is quite good. Every time I go there, I inexplicably feel happy. You know I'm unwell; considering my recovery, moving there shouldn't be such a strange thing, right?"
