Thinking about these issues gives me a headache. Mina's situation is not good either. Even if she doesn't go out and stays in Haicheng, how can I let her take care of me?
There’s no other way; I can only ask Sister Liu if she has anyone suitable to recommend.
She thought for a moment and said, “Let me ask around. There are a few people we worked with before who have taken care of postpartum women, but since it coincides with the New Year, most of them will be going home. I’ll check back with you, and if there’s someone, I’ll have Xiao Zong contact them.”
After thanking her, I couldn’t relax either. I opened my phone to look for housekeeping companies and check the information on postpartum caregivers.
On the surface, everyone seemed fine, but ultimately I needed to meet them in person to finalize anything. So, I called Xiao Minxing to discuss this matter.
He replied calmly, “You don’t need to rush. I’ve already arranged it. Yi Heng’s hospital has postpartum services now. We won’t need to find any caregivers; we can just stay in the hospital for two months. After the New Year, when Sister Liu comes back, everything will be settled.”
“Ah, staying in the hospital for two months? Won’t that drive someone crazy?” I said anxiously.
He laughed on the other end, “It’s more convenient than at home. Both the child and the adult will be taken care of, and everything is provided scientifically. Aside from paying a bit more money, there’s really nothing to worry about. I've checked it out; if you’re still concerned, I can take you to see it this weekend.”
Paying more? He made it sound so easy, but does Xiao Minxing have that kind of money right now? Although he appears to still be a company president on the surface, he must have spent a fortune on his old man.
As soon as I brought it up, he chuckled and said, “You don’t need to worry about that. Even if we have one child or three or five, we can afford it.”
I really don’t know where his confidence comes from. Since he came back last time, I haven’t heard any news about the Xiao family. I don’t know if Xiao Minxing’s marriage has ended or if it’s still at a standstill.
And what about the big hole left by Old Master Xiao? I have no idea how that’s being dealt with.
While lost in thought, I unexpectedly received a call from Bai Xiaoqing.
I almost screamed. Recently busy with various things, I nearly forgot about this matter—not only had I not completed a single drawing but also hadn’t contacted her in a long time. Now she was reaching out personally, which made me a bit flustered.
As I answered the phone, I thought about how to explain my situation without causing any aversion.
Bai Xiaoqing was as polite and graceful as ever. After a simple greeting, before I could mention my pregnancy and injury, she spoke first: “The comic for this issue has been finalized and is currently being printed. I'm calling to confirm some details with you because there will be a brief introduction of the artist included. How do you think we should write it?”
I was stunned for a long time before I hurriedly said, "You all handle it; I trust you."
I could no longer express my gratitude. Since the day I started learning Comic, I had only considered it entertainment, a means of survival later on. But soon, it was disrupted by Xiao Minxing. I never expected they would bring me such good news at this moment.
At the same time, I felt pressure. If the results were good when I bought it, would I have to quickly finish the remaining parts? But recently, I really had no mood to do these things.
When Xiao Minxing came back in the evening, I couldn't help but tell him, urgently requesting, "From now on, when you wake up, call me too; I need to start working."
He just glanced at me and didn't say anything in response.
However, the next morning, when I woke up, I found the bed empty, and it was already ten in the morning.
Sister Liu had placed breakfast on the table and hurried to heat it up when she saw me get up. After eating, it was almost eleven o'clock, and she had already started preparing lunch, waiting for Xiao Minxing to come back to eat.
I sighed, unable to tolerate my current state of decline. But then I made excuses for myself: "It's okay; there's a baby on the way. Once he is born, I'll be free."
However, things always got busier towards the end of the year, especially for Xiao Minxing. He had to work overtime almost every day and came back late on weekends; eventually, he even stopped coming home for lunch.
Mina's resignation was delayed because their company hadn't found a suitable replacement yet. However, she wasn't working as hard as before; at least she would rest on weekends.
So many times she would come to my house under the pretense of taking care of me for Xiao Minxing.
The two of us were best at lounging on the Sofa, snacking while watching TV.
Mina looked at me disdainfully and said, "You're going to get so fat after having a baby! Look at you now; your face is round. You don't look anything like the beautiful girl you used to be."
I rolled my eyes at her and said, "Xiao Minxing hasn't complained about me yet; why are you saying this?"
Mina retorted, "Does he dare? If he says you've gained weight and look ugly, unless he wants to sleep outside?"
It's not about whether he dares or not; it's that Xiao Minxing really wouldn't say that. Every time I mentioned feeling fat, he comforted me by saying it was fine. No matter how I looked, he loved me.
I found it really strange. In the past, when we were at odds with each other, everything I did was wrong. Now it's different; everything is right and justified.
It really is as others say, when a man doesn't love you, being good to him is wrong, being bad to him is wrong, even breathing might be wrong.
And when he loves you, hitting him every day and scolding him, he still thinks that is a manifestation of love.
It's a bit cruel, yet it's the truth; this world has always been unfair, and giving does not necessarily guarantee a return.
I look at Mina; her eyes are glued to the television, and she seems no different from before, but her smile has clearly diminished. If I don't tease her into talking, she will just keep watching TV and might not say a word for a long time.
I don't dare to ask her about Zhuo Feng's situation, but from the news I got from Xiao Minxing, it seems they are getting along well. I heard that during the Spring Festival, they might even meet each other's parents.
Mina turned to look at me and asked, "What's wrong? Why are you looking at me like that?"
I shook my head and said, "Nothing, just thinking you are getting more beautiful."
She pouted and said, "I'm getting old; I'm not like I was back then."
It is a bit lamentable, but it seems she isn't wrong. She does look a bit haggard; even with makeup on, her gaze and the corners of her lips reveal it.
"Well, if Zhuo Feng can't find anyone for a long time, will you keep working there?" I asked her.
Mina tilted her head and thought for a moment before saying, "There's nothing wrong with it. After all, I have shares in there. Even if I'm not working inside, I still have to deal with him. Anyway, this job is something I'm familiar with; I don't hate it that much. So I'll just do it."
