Mother-in-law sat behind me the whole time, and every time Xiao Minxing turned to ask me something, she would glance at him.
She never asked me anything or said a word, remaining as quiet as air.
However, because she was there, I felt particularly awkward talking to Xiao Minxing. I couldn't act spoiled in front of my mother-in-law, so I held back even the changes in my body and just said it was nothing, suggesting we wait until after the check-up at the hospital.
After going back and forth like this, it was almost noon.
The hospital was always crowded, no matter the time. Before getting out of the car, Xiao Minxing called Mina to ask her to come over when she had time.
Then he didn't let me walk anymore and just carried me into the elevator.
With my belly already big, being carried made those who were also squeezing into the elevator automatically make way for us, asking if I was about to give birth.
Xiao Minxing rarely acted aloof; he nodded and smiled at them, replying that it wasn't certain yet.
However, doctors in obstetrics and gynecology had seen this kind of thing many times and were not flustered at all. They first asked about the due date before taking me for a routine check-up.
The result was that my cervix hadn't opened yet, but it should be soon—within a few days. They asked if we wanted to wait at home or in the hospital.
Xiao Minxing immediately said, "Let's wait in the hospital."
The doctor replied, "The maternity wards are currently full. If you want to stay, you'll have to share with others. Some of them haven't been discharged yet after giving birth, so it might be noisy at night."
According to Xiao Minxing's preference for a private room, the doctor directly shook his head and said, "There are no available rooms; even the VIP rooms are occupied."
This was a specialized obstetrics and gynecology hospital, where both the doctors and medical equipment were superior to non-specialized facilities. It was safe and reliable, so despite the poor accommodation conditions, many people still came here.
We had no other choice but to follow their arrangements and squeeze into a three-person shared ward.
Inside, one person had already given birth—a grandmother, grandparents, and various relatives occupied most of the room. There were cries from the baby mixed with their laughter and chatter.
Another person in the room who hadn't given birth also had several companions with her.
Compared to them, it seems like there are fewer of us, and my mother-in-law hasn't shown much enthusiasm; she's been cold and distant.
I was annoyed by the noise, and my mind was troubled. Before Mina arrived, I said to Xiao Minxing, "Why don't we ask Mom to go back first? There's no baby yet, and there’s no place to stay here. It’s not good for everyone to be here."
He must have sensed my irritation, as he shifted his gaze to my mother-in-law.
However, she spoke first: "It's fine. There are plenty of people staying in the hallway outside. It's only for a few days, and it's better to take turns keeping watch at night."
This was the first time she had spoken so much since coming to our house, and it was concerning me. Although it still sounded awkward, I couldn't just rudely send her away; after all, she was saying it for my sake, so I had to endure it.
Xiao Minxing seemed to have been accommodating me for a long time, including when we transferred from one hospital to this one. But this time, he leaned towards supporting my mother-in-law's opinion. I didn't know if he genuinely thought she had more experience or if there were other reasons behind it.
In any case, I couldn't say anything and felt extremely frustrated inside.
When Mina walked in, she frowned as well and looked at the group of people before saying, "Isn't there a sign on the wall saying no loud talking? What's going on with them?"
I replied irritably, "They're happy because they just had a baby; how can they not talk? Maybe when my baby is born, it'll be the same situation."
It was meant as a sarcastic remark, but unexpectedly, Mina laughed and nodded, saying, "You’re right! Just seeing you makes me want to shout. Wow, my godson is about to be born! Hahaha."
Her strange laughter caught my mother-in-law's attention, and Mina quickly closed her mouth and glanced over at Xiao Minxing.
On either side of the bed, in the narrow passageway that could only fit one person walking sideways, stood Mina on one side and Xiao Minxing with my mother-in-law on the other.
He had just completed the hospitalization procedures and was looking at my prenatal check-up documents in his hands. He seemed unaware of our conversation but raised his head to say, "It really is too noisy here; there's no way to rest at night."
I didn't dare mention the nighttime situation; I just wanted to leave right now.
He put the documents into a document bag and said, "I'll go look for them again and see if they can arrange a private room."
I was so frustrated that I snapped without thinking: "Didn't we already ask the doctor when we were admitted? They said there aren't any available rooms. Asking again won't change anything. Why don't we just go home? We don't have to do this anymore."
My mother-in-law glanced at me without saying a word before turning her gaze away and standing silently.
Mina looked over at them and then advised me: "Are you experiencing pre-labor anxiety? It's normal, Anan. Everyone goes through this when having a baby. Why don't you two just book a room at the hotel across the street? It's close by; if you go into labor, you can come over immediately. It would be just like staying here."
Xiao Minxing immediately shook his head and said, "No way, it's dirty in there, the food isn't good either. With someone living in there, it’s better to go back home."
I got off the bed and squeezed past Mina to head outside. "What are we waiting for? Let's go home."
Mina hurriedly grabbed my arm and said, "Anan, don't rush. There must be a way. How about we look for someone we know?"
She couldn't help but start complaining herself, and her grip on my hand loosened.
Xiao Minxing and my mother-in-law followed us out, standing in the noisy gynecology corridor. I truly realized that giving birth is really not that easy; it’s incredibly frustrating.
But what can we do? My belly is already this big; it's hard to avoid it now.
It's strange to think that when I wasn't getting along with Xiao Minxing before, I was determined to protect this child, feeling like it was something connecting me to him. Now things have changed; they both cherish the baby while I find it increasingly annoying, especially after experiencing all the discomforts of pregnancy and the irritations in the hospital.
Once we were outside the hospital, things felt a bit better, but the air was too cold, and it looked like it might rain. Even though it was midday, there wasn't a hint of sunshine.
Xiao Minxing said, "Let's go eat first."
Actually, as the doctor said, it wouldn't be too late to come back when the contractions start. We aren't too far away; it's just a ten-minute drive. But we were worried that if we waited until evening and things progressed quickly—like what you see on TV where someone suddenly gives birth while walking—what would we do? That's why we thought about staying at the hospital early on, but we didn't expect things to turn out like this.
Another thing that annoyed me was my mother-in-law. The good feelings I had forced myself to have for her before had completely vanished at this moment. Seeing her indifferent and unconcerned expression made me feel uncomfortable.
