After the meal, no better solution came to mind.
Xiao Minxing made several phone calls, and from the look on his face, it was clear that the results were not promising.
In fact, apart from knowing Lu Yi Heng, he had no one else to turn to. However, this hospital was not Lu Yi Heng's hospital; even if he had acquaintances here, they were limited.
I sat there feeling frustrated and asked Mina, "Do you have anything else to do these days?"
She widened her eyes and said, "You're about to give birth. What other big things can I do besides staying here?"
With Mina's assurance, I no longer cared about my mother-in-law's expression and turned to Xiao Minxing, saying, "Why don't you take Mom back first? This hospital is not a place for resting anyway. Besides, we don't know when you'll give birth. It's pointless for everyone to stay here; she can come when she wants to."
Xiao Minxing looked at me strangely, but at that moment, I couldn't pay attention to him.
After leaving the restaurant, he first drove me and Mina back to the hospital before really going to drop off my mother-in-law.
We didn't return to the noisy ward but sat downstairs in the inpatient department, wrapped in many layers of clothing to keep warm.
I watched Xiao Minxing's car drive away and quietly sighed in relief.
Mina lightened her tone and joked, "Xiao Minxing's cold aura must be inherited from your mother-in-law! Good fellow! He doesn't say a word; just standing there is enough to scare people. I wonder how Old Master Xiao can stand it?"
"She's not like that at home; she takes good care of Father too."
As soon as Mina heard this, she exclaimed, "So according to you, she still gives you a hard time? Why? After all, you're about to have a grandchild; wouldn't a normal grandmother be happy enough to jump for joy?"
"I've really never seen the Xiao family genuinely happy. They're either smiling with their mouths but not with their eyes or just cold as ice."
Mina rubbed her arms and said, "Why does it sound so scary when you say it?"
This is the truth. I never thought about it deeply before, but now I feel that this family is really quite bizarre. I can't believe they've managed to get along for so many years; each one of them is just so strange.
However, Mina quickly laughed and said, "You are part of their family now too! The way you got angry just now almost made me think Xiao Minxing had possessed you. You were never like this before; you used to be gentle and sweet like a little lamb in everything."
All I could do was glare at her; I didn't know what else to say.
But just thinking about going back to that noisy hospital room made my annoyance rise again. I stood up and walked a couple of steps, saying, "Even if I go home now, after the baby is born, I'll still have to stay here for a few days. Xiao Minxing even said he would hire a Postpartum Caregiver to take care of me. Look at this place; there's barely room for one person! Where would the Postpartum Caregiver even go?"
Thinking about it made me regret it even more. I said to myself, "If I had known, I would have just given birth at Yi Heng's Hospital. At least everything there was arranged. It's all my fault for making things complicated. When I thought of Guan Mingyue, I inexplicably backed down. It's so frustrating."
Mina glanced at me and asked, "What does this have to do with Guan Mingyue?"
I hadn't told Mina about the photo incident; all she knew was that Guan Mingyue was Su Qian's ex-girlfriend, so she thought my giving birth there had nothing to do with her.
If I tried to explain it to her now, it would only complicate things further, so I decided not to say anything.
Instead, Mina sat quietly for a moment and said thoughtfully, "I'll ask Su Qian. He has the most connections; maybe he can help you get a private room here."
"No way! I don't want to owe him any favors," I quickly stopped Mina.
She put down her phone and glanced toward Obstetrics and Gynecology, saying, "Fine, we won't owe him any favors, but look at that Hospital. Can anyone even stay there? Pregnant women crying in the hallway and the sounds of children... My goodness, you've really opened my eyes. I swear I'll never have kids in this lifetime."
I felt so wronged that tears were almost falling down. I echoed her sentiment, saying, "Now I'm regretting it too."
The two of us sat there in the cold winter wind, feeling sad one moment and angry the next, but we weren't making any progress in solving our actual problems.
When my phone rang from my bag, I thought it was Xiao Minxing calling and couldn't help but think of my mother-in-law again; I didn't even want to answer it.
Mina nudged me and said, "What are you dawdling for? Maybe Xiao Minxing has thought of a good idea! Answer it."
But when I took it out to look, the number on it was unfamiliar, still a landline.
I looked up at Mina, and she glanced at me and asked, "Isn't it from the Hospital? There might be something going on, answer it quickly."
I pressed to answer, but the other end was terrifyingly silent, not a single sound, completely unlike the Hospital.
I tried to make some noise, and then I heard a male voice inside asking, "Is this Qiu Yuhan?"
"Yes, who are you?"
There was silence again. I covered the microphone and asked Mina, "Who is this person who knows my name but isn't speaking?"
She shook her head to indicate she didn't know.
After a long time of back and forth, my patience was already thin. Hearing the hesitation on the other end, I said into the phone, "If you don't tell me who you are and what you want, I'm hanging up."
Finally, the other side got anxious and stammered, "Qiu Yuhan, it's Ye Guang."
Ye Guang? Alright, I managed to recall that silly young man Mumu. It seemed like I hadn't seen him since he got sick last time; it had been more than half a year in a blink of an eye.
I wouldn't have thought of him at all now, yet he unexpectedly called me; it was strange.
For a moment, I couldn't even respond, just staring blankly at my mobile phone.
On the other end, Ye Guang stuttered even more severely, taking a long time to finally say a simple Happy New Year to me.
I returned the same blessing and then couldn't help but ask how he was doing now. Had he recovered?
After another long silence, I finally heard him softly say, "No, I've been in the Hospital."
"Ah, you are in the Hospital? Then how did you call me?"
Ye Guang really struggled to explain.
I found that he spoke less fluently than before, his language organization was a bit off, speaking in fragments, and after finishing a thought, he seemed to realize it was wrong and would correct himself, but the corrections made it worse.
I used a lot of patience to listen to him finish, and I understood that he borrowed the phone from the Hospital to call me. His family didn't allow him to contact the outside world, especially me.
Ye Guang even started crying while talking.
I heard someone nearby comforting him, their voice was soft but sounded gentle.
After thinking for a moment, I said to him, "Is there someone next to you? Can I speak to them for a moment?"
After a long while, Ye Guang finally passed the phone to another person. From the voice, it seemed to be a middle-aged man with a rich and warm tone, who simply introduced himself as Ye Guang's Doctor.
I got straight to the point and asked, "What exactly is going on with him? Has he really been staying with you for more than half a year?"
The Doctor replied, "Yes, and his condition has not improved. I noticed he kept writing down a phone number on a piece of paper, which is why I encouraged him to call. May I ask what your relationship is with him?"
