We stayed in the hospital for seven days, recovering well. The child is very robust, a boy, weighing over seven pounds.
The nanny and postpartum caregiver came, and Old Master Xiao brought my mother-in-law to visit as well, but they left quickly without showing any obvious happiness, looking rather indifferent, as if they were visiting someone else's child.
Fortunately, I didn't expect them to be overly enthusiastic; as long as I liked it and Xiao Minxing liked it, that was enough.
I hardly saw Xiao Minxing sleep at all; he was either with me or with our son. Mina told me that even when we both slept, he still had to make phone calls, seemingly directing work even during the New Year.
Mina said, "You used to say Xiao Minxing was very busy and tired. I thought everyone was about the same, but now it seems he has it tougher. According to him, he originally planned to work until two days before the New Year, but because of your childbirth, he wrapped things up early. So now he can't even take a break during the holidays."
"But others are supposed to take a break too. Who has he been calling?" I asked Mina.
She shook her head and replied with a teasing tone, "How would I know? That's all business secrets. If he were willing to tell me, wouldn't I be able to steal his thunder?"
I also didn't know what Xiao Minxing was busy with every day; I just knew he needed money. In this situation, working hard was expected. I felt sorry for him but also knew I couldn't persuade him otherwise, so I simply said nothing.
Instead, after Mina mentioned this matter, she asked about the Xiao family situation.
"Do you remember when I told you about Xiao Minhui selling her company?" She glanced at the entrance and whispered, afraid that Xiao Minxing would overhear.
Honestly, I was quite annoyed with the Xiao family now, so I said, "What's up? I'm not interested in their family news."
Mina smirked slightly before saying, "Do you know where my new job is?"
I shook my head and asked her, "Didn't Xiao Minxing say you went to a new company as a boss? Did you end up at Xiao Minhui's company?"
She nodded quickly and said, "Yes! That company is the one Xiao Minhui sold. I only found out recently that although the owner has changed, it still feels strange."
"Who is your boss?" I asked Mina.
She tilted her head and thought for a moment before saying, "I don't know. I haven't seen the real person yet. The one I've been in contact with is someone from Hong Kong named David. I've also heard that this big shot has recently acquired some failing companies in Haicheng, and he has seemingly become a new force in the city."
"Isn't that great? You have a big tree to provide shade, so you’ll have a good development path in the future."
Mina shot me a glare and said, "Where did you learn that official tone? I've never heard Xiao Minxing talk like that."
I just smiled at her, which made Mina feel frustrated. She waved her hand and said, "Honestly, knowing it's Xiao Minhui's old company gives me a strange feeling. You know, Old Master Xiao has been separated from the family for so long, and now he’s trying to find ways to pull the Xiao Family's assets back together. But the tide has turned; he probably can't turn things around now."
I thought about the situation of the Xiao siblings and said, "He should have realized it would end up like this from the moment they split."
"Yeah, while others are merging, they are splitting apart. A large enterprise suddenly falls into disarray. It's just a pity about the piece Xiao Minfeng had; it used to be quite valuable but has now been squandered away."
Not wanting to discuss their family matters further, I recalled how I once felt unfair for Xiao Minxing not getting good assets at the start of the split. Looking back now, it might have been better if they had divided earlier. If they hadn’t split by now, they would only be arguing more fiercely. And Xiao Minxing is probably the one suffering the most; he likely does all the hard work but doesn’t truly get any power or money.
It really is true that sometimes misfortune can lead to fortune. Although we are struggling a bit now, everything is developing positively. I believe Xiao Minxing will surely work hard to improve our lives.
The biggest advantage of having Mina here with me is that Xiao Minxing can take some time off and handle his own matters. Just like now, when he went out for most of the day. The Postpartum Caregiver returned after making dinner; she took care of me while eating before going out again.
We still have the postpartum room booked at Yi Heng's place. According to Xiao Minxing, it would be better to transfer there, but I really don’t want to go.
So when I saw him come back after dinner, I said, "Let’s cancel that reservation. I have nothing going on right now. We can just invite the Postpartum Caregiver and nanny back home. In a couple of days, we can go straight home instead of wasting money there and taking up someone else's resources."
Xiao Minxing looked at me and asked, "Are you sure you don't want to go?"
I nodded, and he said, "Alright then, I'll call Yi Heng and have him take care of it. But you can stay here for a few more days; I’ll feel more at ease knowing you're doing well."
"I’m doing well, and the baby is doing well too. Living here is actually inconvenient; they have to bring meals to us every day. It would be better to go back," I emphasized.
Xiao Minxing was silent for a moment before muttering to himself, "I always feel like I’m putting you through hardships."
I smiled and took his hand, saying, "Where’s the hardship? Look at those people outside; many husbands aren’t even by their wives' sides. Even when they are, they’re just playing on their mobile phones. My husband can accompany me while I give birth and stays right by my bedside. These days, you haven’t even had a proper shower. Luckily it’s winter; otherwise, you might have driven everyone in this hospital away with your smell!"
Xiao Minxing slightly curled the corners of his mouth and gently rubbed my hair, saying, "You’ve become my nemesis now."
Indeed, I didn’t know where that cold and domineering man from before had gone. The person in front of me was clearly a warm little man who prioritized me and was always accommodating.
After returning home from the hospital, I truly began the long journey of postpartum recovery. I finally understood how good it was to have postpartum care in the hospital as Xiao Minxing had said.
Because there, most of the time, the baby was taken care of by a postpartum caregiver and nurses. My day consisted of just looking at a few things, eating, and breastfeeding. If the baby cried, they would take him out to play.
But once we got home, chaos ensued. The baby seemed to struggle with the new environment and cried day and night since we returned.
The postpartum caregiver, the nanny, and Xiao Minxing took turns watching him, but I was even more helpless. Just seeing that little guy made me furious; if he weren’t my own child, I would want to give him a good beating.
Xiao Minxing, a big man, was sweating profusely. He took off his outer coat and wore only a thin shirt as he took the baby from the postpartum caregiver's hands and said, "You go cook for Anan; I’ll handle this."
He carried the baby into the living room, swaying him gently while soothing him. I listened as he spoke softly until the little one gradually stopped crying.
