Caught in a dilemma, I could only hand over more responsibilities to my former assistant, including matters from the company. I tried to delegate as much as possible, but after all, I was still a newcomer. If I didn’t manage anything, how was that different from being sidelined? When Mina returned, what would I have to show her?
In this conflicting situation, where I had to work hard despite everything, a week quickly passed.
I was worried about Mina’s situation and took the opportunity to call her over the weekend.
From her voice, I couldn’t discern her emotions, which itself was concerning. She had just gotten married; logically, she should have been happy to receive my call. Why was she so indifferent?
My intuition told me something was wrong, but no matter how much I asked Mina, she insisted that everything was fine.
Feeling anxious, I waited for Xiao Minxing to return that evening to discuss this matter with him.
He thought for a moment and said, “Perhaps she knows about Longwen’s family background and has some thoughts about it?”
I looked at him in confusion and asked, “What family background does Longwen have? Wasn’t he just a singer in a bar before?”
Xiao Minxing nodded and said, “Yes, that’s his hobby, but his family isn’t one that has always been involved in singing.”
It was then that I understood what he meant. I narrowed the distance between us and stared at him, asking, “I asked you a long time ago to help me look into Longwen’s background. You haven’t mentioned anything until now. Did you already know about this?”
Xiao Minxing replied calmly, “I didn’t investigate; what I know is what Longwen himself has said. If you ask him, he’ll probably tell you too.”
I didn’t believe that. If it were true, Mina might have asked him long ago and wouldn’t be acting this way now unless what he said differed greatly from reality.
But we were separated by distance and had no way of knowing what was happening over there.
The more anxious I became to know, the slower time seemed to pass. Almost every day, I wanted to call Mina and ask her if the wedding date had been set and how her meeting with Longwen's parents went.
I didn't receive any news from her, but I did get a call from Su Qian.
Every time I saw him or received a call from him, I felt inexplicably surprised. I didn't know why, but whenever we parted ways, I had the illusion that we would never see each other again.
So when he said on the other end that he wanted to come to the office to see me, I was stunned for a while and couldn't react.
Su Qian said on the line, "I have some news about Mina. How about I come over and tell you?"
I couldn't refuse this, fearing he wouldn't find it, so I repeated the address here.
Su Qian laughed and said, "I know; I visited a few times when Mina was there."
Oh right, his relationship with Mina was just as good as mine with her. So during those times when I was troubled by Xiao Minxing's issues, Xiao Zhe's matters, and everything else in life, he could still maintain normal contact with Mina.
Sometimes I think it's strange how our group of friends is. For instance, Su Qian and Zhuo Feng used to be such good friends, but now because of Mina, I hardly hear a word about Zhuo Feng from him. Of course, this has a lot to do with the fact that I'm not very close to him either.
Su Qian arrived around three in the afternoon.
I took him to the company's reception room. He looked around and smiled, saying, "Sitting here feels a bit like we're discussing work."
I awkwardly replied, "Sorry, I don't have a better place to host guests."
He just smiled and didn't say anything further as he accepted the coffee I handed him.
I sat in the chair next to him, eager to know about Mina's situation, so I spoke first: "Did Mina call you?"
He shook his head. "That girl wouldn't call me. It's hard enough to reach her; whenever I do, she hangs up after just a couple of sentences. I don't even know what she's busy with every day."
I was also curious about what she was busy with, so I looked at Su Qian and asked, "Then how did you find out about her?"
He smiled gently as he used to and then said, "A friend of mine happened to be there. Actually, he wasn't looking for news about Mina but rather about Longwen's family. However, I thought it might be useful for you."
I couldn't wait and urged, "Hurry up and tell me."
"Longwen is the young master of the Hong Kong Long Family business."
I had heard of the Long Family before; Xiao Minxing had mentioned them. This company is one of the leading enterprises in Hong Kong and has held a dominant position for many years. I've heard they started as a family business, but unlike other family businesses, they prioritize meritocracy.
What is most admirable is that the children of the Long family seem to inherit a talent for business; even though they hire capable people, they never exclude their own children.
I'm not quite sure what the internal dynamics are like, but the fact that Longwen is a member of this family is truly shocking.
Su Qian said, "I didn't expect it either. I just thought he came from an extraordinary background and found him a bit odd in Haicheng, but I didn't realize he had such a background."
I couldn't find the words to describe my feelings. If Mina had no idea and followed Longwen there, it would only leave her more at a loss.
She was used to the workplace where having control over all the data in her hands gave her confidence in winning cases.
That kind of naivety, where one forgets themselves upon seeing others with money, even if she could pretend otherwise, wouldn't feel good inside. What she wanted was honesty, not deception, whether it was well-intentioned or malicious.
I also know why she doesn't want to talk to us too much during this time.
She must really love Longwen, but she can't accept the outcome.
Su Qian shook his coffee cup and said, "So to put your mind at ease, I've decided to take a trip to Hong Kong soon."
"Huh? You're going too? Is there something going on?" I hurriedly asked.
He smiled and said, "Is that even a question? It's not a big deal. Mina is our best friend, and no matter what, I have to go and be with her."
If time were to move forward, and if Mina hadn't gone through so much, I actually think she would be fine with Su Qian. At least as friends, Su Qian treats each of us very well.
He put down his cup and asked me, "I'm leaving tomorrow. Do you have anything you want me to bring her?"
I had no idea what I could bring for Mina and just stared at him blankly.
Su Qian laughed and said, "Alright, I'll just bring her some junk food. I'll take your thoughts along too. Anyway, it's not far from here; they have everything."
I quickly nodded and said, "Mina loves spicy food. I heard that Hong Kong has mostly sweet treats, so I'll go buy some for you to take to her."
Su Qian stood up and said, "Great! Let's go together, and you can help me pick some out."
