In the kitchen, Xing Ruyi was busy cooking porridge. The snow-white Japonica rice and round longan filled the air with a sweet aroma as they simmered for a long time.
"Ruyi, please, can you hurry and save our Brother Chang?"
Since entering, Shengzi had repeated the same plea countless times, but it seemed that Xing Ruyi had not heard him at all, as she continued to focus on her porridge. At that moment, she was adding a handful of unknown fruits into the pot.
"Ruyi used to insist on calling us siblings with Brother Chang, and usually addressed him as Brother Chang. It turns out all of that was just pretense; she wasn't sincere at all." Seeing that Xing Ruyi still showed no sign of moving, Shengzi's tone grew heavier: "Since Ruyi is so cold-hearted, I might as well act like I never came here and never asked for your help."
"You still claim you want to save your Brother Chang? If you can't even wait this little while, it's no wonder you can only be a Constable and not a great captain." As Xing Ruyi spoke, she poured the simmering porridge into a bowl.
"What are you still standing there for? Hurry up and take this bowl of soup back to your Brother Chang."
"This?" Shengzi stared blankly at her. "What is this?"
"Heart Medicine. It's your Brother Chang's Heart Medicine." Xing Ruyi placed the bowl in Shengzi's hands and brushed off some dust from her clothes.
"Heart Medicine? Ruyi, this bowl of porridge is my Brother Chang's Heart Medicine?" Shengzi asked repeatedly, his disappointment quickly turning into anger: "Ruyi, if you intend to ignore my Brother Chang, that's one thing, but why do you have to mock us? I..."
"Go ahead and break it. Try dropping the bowl. Sheng Demei, Shengzi, I warn you—this soup is the only bowl available. If you break it, your Brother Chang's life will be at stake." Xing Ruyi raised an eyebrow defiantly. Shengzi puffed out his cheeks but ultimately lowered his raised arm.
"Is this really the Heart Medicine for my Brother Chang?"
"Believe it or not." Xing Ruyi shrugged and turned to leave.
“Ruyi, my dear girl, is it not enough that I admit my mistake? I am just confused; this is clearly just a bowl of ordinary porridge. How could it possibly be the medicine to save Brother Chang?” Shengzi rushed over, holding the porridge in one hand and tugging at Xing Ruyi's clothing with the other.
“Do you see those fruits? They are called Fruiting Ziziphus. They have a sweet yet slightly bitter taste and possess miraculous effects for nourishing the liver and kidneys, benefiting the heart and spleen, and promoting black hair. However, these Fruiting Ziziphus are different; they were picked from the tree beside Yanniang's grave. Although the tree grows above ground, its roots extend deep into the soil. The branch I picked actually passes through the bottom of Yanniang's coffin, merging with her essence and blood. Would you consider this to be Heart Medicine?”
Whether it is Heart Medicine or not, Shengzi did not know, but upon hearing that the root passed through Yanniang's coffin, Xing Ruyi felt a chill run down her spine.
“Actually, to cure your Brother Chang, all you need to do is have him consume these Fruiting Ziziphus fruits. But since he has been ill for several days, he needs some rice and grains to replenish his strength. That's why I took the trouble to make this Fruiting Ziziphus Longan soup. Look closely; besides Japonica Rice, Longan, and Fruiting Ziziphus, there is also Pork. All of it is of the finest quality, washed and chopped, then boiled in clean water. And take a look at what I used to make the porridge; this is the root of that Fruiting Ziziphus tree—the very one that passes through the bottom of Yanniang's coffin.”
Hearing this made Shengzi’s scalp tingle; he dared not look any longer and hurriedly took the bowl outside.
“Ruyi, I'm going to deliver the porridge to Brother Chang.”
“You scared him,” said the fox as it elegantly strolled out from behind the stove.
“I was just speaking the truth. If I told him that what was in this Fruiting Ziziphus Longan soup was not Pork, but rather Yanniang's flesh, wouldn't that frighten him even more?” Xing Ruyi stuck out her tongue. “I hope this bowl of soup helps Brother Chang recover; otherwise, my midnight grave digging and skinning would be in vain.”
“Do you care about Chang Tai?” The fox shot her a sideways glance, its eyes filled with jealousy. “Do you like him?”
“Of course! He is honest and steady, plus he has great potential. I bet that before long, he will become a renowned general of the Tang Dynasty, known as the Qian Niu Wei General.” Xing Ruyi clasped her hands together, her half-closed eyes sparkling with starlight.
“You are not allowed to like him!” The fox declared domineeringly, its jealousy intensifying.
“Why not?” Xing Ruyi retorted, squatting down and poking her finger at the fox's back. “By the way, there’s something I haven’t asked you yet. When Brother Chang returned, I seemed to see you transform into an incredibly handsome man and even give yourself a name related to something like Yin Yang. What was that about?”
"Yin Chensi," the fox corrected through clenched teeth.
"Oh, right, that's the name," Xing Ruyi said, cupping the fox's face. "Tell me, did you really transform, or are you using your magic to create an illusion for me?"
"And you?" the fox countered, staring at Xing Ruyi's red Yan Yan lips.
"Me? If you ask me, it must be an illusion. How could someone as ugly as you possibly turn into such a handsome guy?" Halfway through her words, Xing Ruyi suddenly widened her eyes because that damn Stinky Fox had kissed her lips. Then, in a flash of white light, the fox's face transformed into an impeccable handsome face, and she found herself being held in his arms, feeling quite taken advantage of.
Oh no, how embarrassing and shameful!
Xing Ruyi shyly closed her eyes but heard the fox let out a soft laugh beside her. To her surprise, his warm and gentle tongue pushed open her lips, turning what was initially a light peck into a fiery French kiss.
Oh no, is there a veterinarian who can tell her if being kissed by a fox could give her rabies? Also, if she accidentally got intimate with the fox, would she get pregnant? And if she did get pregnant, what would she give birth to? A human? A fox? Or something half-human and half-fox? This question is so difficult to answer; there are no examples to refer to!
