The fox wants to become human! The fox wants to become human!
How can this be?
Clearly, being a demon is much better than being a human, isn't it? Humans experience birth, aging, sickness, and death, while demons do not; humans have emotions and desires, and although demons also have them, they have much more time to forget. Humans need to walk to get somewhere, earn money for transportation, and pay for lodging, while demons only need to swoosh away in an instant. Since there are so many advantages to being a demon, why does Yin Chensi want to become human? Will he change for her?
Xing Ruyi's mind was in chaos, various scenes flashing through her head, finally settling on the image of a handsome fox that had aged and lost its beauty, causing her to shiver unexpectedly.
"Sister Ruyi, what's wrong?" A-Ling had no idea; in that moment, Xing Ruyi's brain was racing with thoughts. Seeing her shiver suddenly, A-Ling thought she had encountered something unclean in the Wang Family but couldn't find anything unusual.
"Nothing, nothing at all. I just suddenly thought of something very scary," Xing Ruyi forced a smile and patted her chest as a distraction. "A-Ling, can a human cultivate into a demon?"
"A human? Cultivate into a demon?" A-Ling shook her head. "How is that possible? Humans are humans, and demons are demons; they cannot be mixed together."
"That's unfair." Xing Ruyi pouted. "Demons can cultivate into humans; why can't humans cultivate into demons?"
"Sister Ruyi, have you heard of the Six Paths?" A-Ling extended her pale fingers and counted one by one: "Heavenly Path, Asura Realm, Human Path, Beast Path, Hungry Ghost Realm, Hell Path. As the saying goes, humans strive for higher places while water flows downward. Demons originally come from beasts and belong to the Beast Path, which is after the Human Path. Therefore, those from the Beast Path can cultivate into the Human Path, but humans cannot go back and enter the Beast Path. However, there are exceptions; those who did evil in life may be cast into the Beast Path after death. Still, even if you enter the Beast Path, becoming a demon is not an easy task."
"So becoming a demon is as difficult as becoming an immortal? Then forget it; I’ll just be an honest human," Xing Ruyi said with disappointment. A-Ling covered her mouth and giggled. Although she was a ghost, her laughter was charming; it's no wonder that later generations could write about ghosts like Nie Qian in such captivating ways.
"Sister Ruyi has asked so many questions; could it be that you want to be together with Brother Yin for eternity?" A-Ling tilted her head playfully. "If that's truly your goal, I have a method: you should be a bad person—really bad! If you become bad enough, you might just enter the Asura Realm. In turn, Brother Yin would also need to be a wicked demon so that he can fall into the Asura Realm with you."
"While it's a good idea, it's still quite a troublesome one," Xing Ruyi poked A-Ling's forehead. "Alright then, weren't you just asking me about that infant soul from the Wang Family?"
Upon hearing the words "Infant Soul," A-Ling's smile faded. "Ever since my sister went in, I've been waiting here, partly out of fear that something might happen to her, and partly because I want to know what will happen to that child as soon as possible."
"As for the child's situation, I haven't discussed it with the Wang Family yet. After all, there's still someone unconscious in that room. If I can't heal the child's mother, they won't believe me no matter how many I have. For now, we can only find the Daoist who performed the ritual and see if this Ritual of Moon Offering can be undone. As for the child's mother, we'll wait until she wakes up."
"At this point, that's all we can do," A-Ling nodded.
The process of finding the Daoist was not easy, as he was a wandering practitioner without a fixed residence. Even with A-Ling sending various wandering spirits to search for him, there was no trace. Just when Xing Ruyi was feeling frustrated, the Daoist unexpectedly showed up at their door, directly targeting A-Ling.
Inside Ruyi Workshop, Xing Ruyi raised her eyelids slightly and feigned surprise at the uninvited shabby Daoist before her. "Is there a ghost in my shop? I wonder where you heard such news. Are you here to ruin my Rouge Shop because you see it's doing well?"
"You misunderstand, young lady. I merely stumbled upon this place today and noticed that your maternal family has planted a Ghost Tree. It’s not good, so I thought I should remind you. Little did I know that this ghost has already occupied your shop for several days and is merely a Vengeful Spirit with some Daoist practices. Although you seem unharmed now, it’s hard to guarantee that you won’t be harmed by her later on. How can someone who cultivates ignore this?"
Xing Ruyi's eyes flickered as she secretly cast a spell to temporarily suppress the Eerie Aura surrounding A-Ling.
"If what you say is true and frightening, then please take a closer look in the Backyard. If there truly is an Evil Spirit causing trouble, I would need your help to deal with it." As she spoke, Xing Ruyi had already moved out from behind the counter and gestured for the Daoist to follow.
"Please," the Daoist nodded slightly and followed Xing Ruyi into the Backyard.
"There’s an old saying: 'Do not plant mulberry trees in front or willows behind; do not plant ghostly trees in the center of the yard.' I see that your yard has excellent Feng Shui, yet you have planted these ghostly entities, which has reversed the Feng Shui and turned it into a place that nurtures ghosts and monsters." Upon entering the Backyard, the Daoist shook his head repeatedly and pointed out what he deemed inappropriate to Xing Ruyi: "When poplars encounter wind, their leaves rustle like ghosts clapping hands. If planted improperly, it will surely bring misfortune to the owner. The cypress is a Ghost Tree and should not be planted in your courtyard; otherwise, it will invite ghosts inside. Also, this Sophora Tree can be planted in a yard but must not be a dead tree. You should move these things out as soon as possible."
"Thank you for your reminder; shortly, the Fox Demon will certainly arrange for someone to transplant these items." Just as she finished speaking, the Daoist suddenly exclaimed, pointing at a Hibiscus plant. "It's one thing to plant a Ghost Tree; how could you also plant this Ghost Flower in your yard? No wonder it has attracted Evil Spirits! That you are still safe at this moment is truly fortunate."
Ghost Flower?
Xing Ruyi had never heard anyone refer to Hibiscus as the Ghost Flower before. Upon reflection, it made sense. Hibiscus flowers fall directly from the branches, so they do seem to disappear all at once. If the Poplar, Cypress, and Sophora Tree were intentionally planted by Xing Ruyi, then this Hibiscus must have been inadvertently relocated to the yard.
Out of the corner of her eye, she caught sight of A-Ling standing hidden beneath the Hibiscus tree, her cold gaze fixed on the Taoist priest. The priest seemed to sense something and took a Compass from his Bagua Pouch, looking intently at the Hibiscus with a serious expression.
"Strange! Truly strange!"
"Has the Mage already found that evil spirit?" Xing Ruyi silently formed a hand seal and cast a white light onto A-Ling. A-Ling's face showed a hint of pain, and her gaze towards the priest became even colder.
