Xing Ruyi, though not afraid of ghosts, respected them. After all, some ghosts were unreasonable and quite difficult to deal with. For her, it was better to avoid trouble; in this desolate wilderness, it was best not to kill ghosts if she could help it, to conserve her strength for dealing with Wei Shumou.
As she contemplated this, her hands swiftly gathered the scattered bones around her and placed them all into the grave pit she had inadvertently created with her foot. Just as she was about to cover the decaying earth, she spotted the old Rouge Box.
Xing Ruyi was familiar with Rouge, being a practitioner herself. So when she saw the box, she instinctively picked it up and opened it.
At that moment, a gust of wind rose from the ground, and the eerie blue Ghost Fire flickered before extinguishing completely.
When Xing Ruyi reflected on everything later, she realized that she had fallen into a ghost's trap, and the item that lured her in was this broken Rouge.
"How dare you even scheme against your great-aunt!"
Xing Ruyi was furious, gripping the Rouge Box tightly as if she were squeezing someone's throat. Yet her expression looked surprisingly adorable—her lips slightly pouted and cheeks puffed up, resembling a three-year-old child throwing a tantrum for no reason.
The fox gently rubbed her face. "You're not really angry, are you?"
"How do you know? I am very angry! I am truly, truly angry!" As she spoke, Xing Ruyi deliberately placed her hands on her hips in a show of anger, but the next moment, she faltered because of the fox's words.
"Not at all! You just feel embarrassed for being outsmarted by a ghost."
"It is quite embarrassing! Besides, any ghost that can outsmart me must be very powerful." Xing Ruyi's eyes sparkled as she looked at the fox with a pleading expression. "Yin Chensi, can I defeat her?"
"You can!"
"Are you so sure?"
"Because I'm here; you won't suffer any losses!" The fox was quite confident, especially in matters like this.
"Yin Chensi."
"Um?"
"Has anyone ever said you're really full of yourself?"
"What do you mean?"
"Nothing, just praising someone for being amazing." Xing Ruyi covered her mouth and chuckled.
"This is definitely not a compliment but an insult." The fox shook his head helplessly and lightly flicked Xing Ruyi's forehead with his finger. "You, tsk tsk!"
"You are the one! You were clearly pretending to be asleep, deliberately letting me go out on my own for an adventure." Xing Ruyi pouted in grievance. "Now look, I've ruined my looks. Are you satisfied?"
"I actually think those two patches of Post-Mortem Staining suit you quite well!" Seeing that Xing Ruyi was fine, the fox smiled and stood up.
"Hey! Yin Chensi, what do you mean by that?" Xing Ruyi angrily threw a soft punch, but in the end, she couldn't bring herself to hit him. It landed softly on the fox. "And why did you carry him out in the middle of the night? Even if you're worried about me, you could have asked the chef from Backyard to help."
Hearing the disdain in Xing Ruyi's tone, Yin Yuan rolled his eyes with a humph.
"Wei Shumou has turned into a demon!"
The fox stated this fact calmly.
"Turned into a demon? Wei Shumou!" Xing Ruyi's beautiful eyes widened as she murmured after a moment, "So it's that easy to become a demon? You just need to eat a few children?"
"You've got it wrong!" The fox reminded her.
"Right, considering the number of children going missing in the city, even if he didn't eat hundreds, he must have eaten dozens. Wei Shumou really should be killed!" Xing Ruyi rested her chin on her hand and seriously asked the fox, "If I also ate children, would I be able to become a demon too?"
"I see, you misunderstood!" The fox patted Xing Ruyi's head. "So, about that baby bowl, do you dare to eat it?"
"What’s there to be afraid of?" Xing Ruyi snorted, then added, "It's just that I don't want to!"
The fox smiled, its eyes filled with increasing affection.
Clapping its hands, it conjured a wisp of Ghost Fire and illuminated the spot where the bones had just been buried. Sure enough, among the weeds, it found half a stone tablet. The characters on it were only partially visible, but one could vaguely make out the character "Wei."
"It seems to be a Village Stele!"
"But this place is quite a distance from Wei Village. How could a perfectly good Village Stele appear here?"
"Just ask, and you'll find out," the fox suggested, indicating for Xing Ruyi to look at the Rouge box in her hand.
"This?"
"The thing that can bring you into an illusion certainly isn't the scattered bones on the ground. This Rouge is infused with human resentment; if I'm not mistaken, it should be the legendary Blood Rouge."
"Blood Rouge! Made from blood?"
"To be precise, it's made from the heart's blood of a virgin girl, and those who can create this Blood Rouge must have been extremely beautiful in life. When mixed with blood and applied to the skin, it allows one to take on the appearance of the deceased. It is said that this is a secret technique from the southern regions that rose to prominence in the Central Plains area a hundred years ago but only lasted for a few years before disappearing."
"Yin Chensi, did anything happen when you came here?" Xing Ruyi recalled his disheveled state. "Is it related to this Blood Rouge?"
"There's some connection, I suppose?" The fox did not deny it but also seemed unwilling to confess openly.
Seeing his reluctance, Xing Ruyi did not press further. She simply closed her eyes and activated her ghostly powers to search around. In the southwest direction, a faint white light began to emerge, growing brighter until it became somewhat blinding. Suddenly opening her eyes, she saw through the thick black mist a shadowy figure standing—a female ghost.
She is a ghost, not a human, because Xing Ruyi did not sense any human anger, only a powerful aura of the dead.
As the shadow approached, it became clear that it was a girl dressed in white with white shoes, holding a white umbrella. The umbrella was held low, as if she did not wish to reveal her appearance to others.
"Xiu'er greets the young lady. Thank you for the kindness of picking up the bones."
"You are called Xiu'er? Are you the owner of this Blood Rouge?"
The white umbrella swayed gently: "To be more precise, Xiu'er should be the Rouge in your hand."
Xiu'er said this as she lifted the umbrella, revealing a slightly pale yet beautiful face beneath. However, upon closer inspection, one could see that the face was marked with numerous scars, crisscrossing like a sparse spider's web.
"Why did you lure me into an illusion? What is your connection to that Wei Shu?"
"You are mistaken, young lady. It was not Xiu'er who lured you into an illusion, but rather the lingering resentment that has filled the skies above Wei Village for a hundred years. As for the person you mentioned, Wei Shu, Xiu'er does not know who he is."
"Then who are you?"
"I have already introduced myself to you. I am Xiu'er, the white bones you just buried. My blood is mixed in with the Rouge in your hand." Xiu'er said as she bowed slightly: "I am merely a wandering soul in Wei Village. Knowing that you are not of common people and that this young man is a Celestial Being from Qingqiu, I earnestly request both of you to lend a hand and help me escape my predicament. As for your face, I will help restore it."
"Are you negotiating terms with me?" Xing Ruyi raised an eyebrow.
