"I dare not. Xiu'er is merely a wandering soul, how could I negotiate with you, Miss?"
Xiu'er lowered her head, the lines on her face becoming more pronounced under the glow of the Ghost Fire.
Xing Ruyi touched her own face and glanced at the fox. Seeing that the fox's expression remained unchanged, she replied, "So, what do you want me to help you with?"
Xiu'er stared at Xing Ruyi for a moment before softly saying, "Miss has matters to attend to tonight; Xiu'er's affairs are not urgent at this moment." With that, she bowed slightly and vanished into the night along with the white umbrella.
Xing Ruyi moved closer to the fox and nudged him with her shoulder, asking, "What does she mean?"
"What do you think?" The fox countered with a question, while Yin Yuan in his arms lazily yawned.
"I think it's not that simple. It feels like this ghost named Xiu Xiu is trying to set a trap for me."
"It seems my Fox Demon isn't too foolish," the fox said with a tone of pride as if he were speaking of his own daughter coming of age. However, Xing Ruyi did not appreciate it. She lifted her foot and stomped down hard on the fox's toes.
"Stinky Fox, you dead fox! Knowing she wants to set a trap for me, you're just standing there watching coolly. Are you in cahoots with her? Did you take a liking to her when you first arrived?"
"Fox Demon," the fox said, his handsome face slightly drooping. "Are you perhaps being overly jealous?"
"Who would be jealous of something like that!"
"Then are you feeling possessive?" The fox smirked. "No wonder I can smell something sourer than usual."
"You've smelled others?" Xing Ruyi grabbed the front of the fox's clothing and glared at him fiercely as if she were about to eat him alive. "Who is that person?"
“Fox Demon, I’m still holding the child.” The fox gently patted her hand. “On a dark and windy night, in the wilderness, a girl should pay attention to her image. You should know, when it comes to gossip, ghosts are much more terrifying than people.”
“Stop dodging. Answer my question honestly.”
“Which one?”
“All of them!”
“Without entering the tiger's den, how can one catch the Tiger?” The fox lightly held Fox Demon’s hand. “The wind is strong in Wei Village, hold on to me, or your heart might get blown away!”
Xing Ruyi struggled slightly but quickly settled down. As the fox said, she wasn’t foolish nor was she the kind of girl who only knew how to be willful and spoiled; even when throwing a tantrum, she would use her brain. The fox's earlier words were quite obscure, but with just a little thought, it wasn’t hard to understand the meaning behind them.
After the fox pulled Xing Ruyi away, Xiuer appeared again, just like before, dressed in white clothes and white shoes, but the face beneath that white umbrella was devoid of skin.
She watched the two from behind and let out a low ghostly laugh.
The fox heard it and frowned slightly, while Xing Ruyi dug at her ear and complained to the fox, “That ghostly laugh is worse than crying; hers is the most unpleasant of all.”
The fox patted her hand but remained silent. Meanwhile, Yin Yuan in the fox's arms lazily opened her eyes. Her lips parted slightly as she poked out her soft pink tongue and gently licked along her lip.
They passed through overgrown grass and stepped over graves until Xing Ruyi was finally pulled by the fox into Wei Village. Before them, Wei Village was brightly lit yet unusually quiet.
“Heart, Wei Shu has turned into a demon!”
As soon as Xing Ruyi moved her foot slightly, she was immediately pulled into the fox's embrace.
"I know, I understand." Xing Ruyi looked up at the fox, whose eyes appeared even more beautiful in the night: "Yin Chensi, what is a demon like?"
"You'll find out soon." The fox held Yin Yuan in one arm and took Xing Ruyi's hand with the other, slowly walking toward the village.
It was a village, but it resembled a camp made of stone piles, with houses scattered among blacksmith forges, some of which still had fires burning. As they passed by one forge, Xing Ruyi stopped because she saw half a person—specifically, a head inside the forge and feet outside, belonging to a dead man.
"Is it Wei Shu's doing?"
"We're late!" The fox looked up; at some point, the thick dark clouds had dispersed, revealing a crescent moon that glowed red, as if just stained with blood.
"What a strange moon," Xing Ruyi murmured, completely unaware of the large shadow creeping up behind her.
"Fox Demon, watch out!"
As the shadow lunged at Xing Ruyi, the fox elegantly spun around, protecting her in its embrace. Meanwhile, the baby in its arms stretched out its arms and legs.
From the pitch-black shadow emerged a pair of equally crimson eyes.
Xing Ruyi realized that this person was indeed Wei Shu. However, his current appearance resembled that of a wolf dog trapped in a cage and starved for a long time.
Xing Ruyi couldn't hide her disappointment as she poked the fox: "Is this what becoming a demon looks like?"
"Well, it's not great," the fox replied honestly and added an explanation: "In life, he wasn't much of a person; after becoming a demon, he can only be this way. But remember, a dog that bites doesn't bark. Just look around; those harmed by him are not few."
"So what should we do?" Xing Ruyi asked lightly, but her expression was tense. In her right hand, she held a Ghost Fire flower, which burned not only in ghostly blue but also in bright red.
"You can do whatever you want; at least I'm here, and I won't let you fall into someone else's trap," the Fox said, taking a step back.
"Stinky Fox, even at a time like this, you're still letting a woman fight!" Xing Ruyi retorted, her right hand quickly flipping up to make a missile gesture. The red flame at her fingertips was aimed precisely at Wei Shu's forehead.
The Fox shrugged and glanced at Yin Yuan, who was sitting cross-legged on the roof opposite them, smiling as he watched Xing Ruyi struggle to fight the demon in the center of the arena. If it weren't for the fear of startling his Fox Demon mother, he would have opened his mouth to cheer her on. She was fighting so slowly that his once-full stomach was now growling with hunger.
"Yin Chensi, what kind of father are you? Not only are you not helping me fight, but you've also thrown your child onto the rooftop!" In the midst of the struggle, Xing Ruyi looked up and saw Yin Yuan. A surge of anger rose from her dantian, and without caring about appearances, she grabbed an iron rod nearby and swung it toward Wei Shu's head.
With three parts anger and seven parts demonic power, there was a loud clang as Wei Shu fell to the ground.
Not bothering to check if the demon was dead or alive, Xing Ruyi quickly walked under the roof and reached out her hand toward Yin Yuan. "Come down, Yin Yuan!"
Yin Yuan looked at Wei Shu behind her, who was swaying with his sharp teeth bared, and adorably shook his head. Before Xing Ruyi could say anything else, he shot over like an arrow.
Everything happened so fast that when Xing Ruyi turned around, the fierce Wei Shu had transformed into a shriveled Human Skin.
A chilling wind rose, swirling around the dried skin like autumn leaves tumbling and rolling away.
"Yin Chensi—"
"Shh!" The Fox grasped Xing Ruyi's hand and pulled her behind him. The playful glint in his eyes turned cold.
