As the Drought Demon leaped towards Lai Qi, Xing Ruyi instinctively darted out from behind the fox and quickly pushed Lai Qi and the Village Chief back into the Barrier.
The Drought Demon's claws barely grazed Xing Ruyi's hair. When she regained her senses, the first thing she saw was the fox's furious eyes, followed by the Drought Demon’s expression that seemed ready to swallow her whole.
"I'm sorry! I got a bit anxious and forgot about you, Husband!" Xing Ruyi clasped her hands together and pouted at the fox. Once the fox's expression softened slightly, she turned back, hands on her hips, and scolded Lai Qi and the Village Chief: "You two can do whatever you want, but not in front of me. Your lives may not be worth much, but my reputation is valuable. If you don't want to die, stay put in that circle. If you jump out again, I won't need the Drought Demon to catch you; I'll just throw you both to it myself!"
After finishing with Lai Qi and the Village Chief, Xing Ruyi glanced sideways at her hair. A few strands had fallen on her shoulder; it was definitely because of that ugly Drought Demon. She glared angrily at it.
"And you! Instead of being a proper Corpse, you had to turn into a zombie. Do you think being a zombie is fun? You’ve turned an entire village into a drought; how satisfying is that?" She squinted and reached out a hand towards the fox: "What about the Confining Immortal Lock? Can it be used to bind him?"
"What do you want to bind him for?" The fox asked while still using a Spell to restrain the Drought Demon.
Even though this thing hadn’t harmed the Fox Demon just now, he was still very angry. He was upset with himself for being overly confident and forgetting that the Fox Demon was not the type to stand behind him as a delicate woman needing protection. On another note, he was furious at this Drought Demon for daring to attack his woman right in front of him.
Clearly something that could be torn apart with one hand, yet the fox chose to hold back because he understood his woman’s character too well. Xing Ruyi was definitely someone who would take revenge herself, so he couldn’t steal her fun.
Xing Ruyi also knew that the fox could easily eliminate this Drought Demon but understood that he wouldn’t personally deal with it right now; instead, he would use his Spell to keep it in check while allowing her to vent her frustrations.
"Is there any way to deal with this Drought Demon besides burning it alive? For example, something that can make it suffer as a zombie without leaving any future troubles?"
As she asked, Xing Ruyi rolled up her sleeves, looking like she was just short of holding a whip.
The Village Chief squatted inside the circle, torn between not wanting to watch his father suffer and fearing that if he went out now, his father would be clawed to death. He felt so conflicted… especially since Lai Qi wouldn’t let him off either, staring at him with eyes like those of someone seeking revenge for their father’s murder, making him feel uncomfortable all over.
"There is indeed a method, but the process is a bit disgusting!" The fox said leisurely while glancing at the Drought Demon. This Drought Demon didn’t seem natural but rather designed by someone. However, he decided to wait until after venting his anger before revealing this discovery.
"What method?"
First, soak a rope in Child's Urine, then loop it around the Drought Demon's neck and hang it upside down from a tree. Finally, splash it all over with Child's Urine. As for how effective it will be, you'll find out when the time comes."
"What's disgusting about that? Urine comes from corpses and water; it makes sense. In later generations, it's referred to as Reincarnation Wine or Restoration Soup—it's an idiom. This is an explanation about Child's Urine found in a medical text from later times. It means that children are pure Yang bodies representing infinite vitality and energy throughout their bodies; thus this urine is also produced from Yang energy warmed by the kidneys. Although it's a metabolic waste product, it still retains true essence energy. In some folk practices, Child's Urine can ward off evil spirits. For example, if one is confused by Ghost Fog or trapped in Ghost Wall, simply sprinkling some Child's Urine can break the spell."
"My Fox Demon knows quite a lot!"
"That's right. After all, I am the head of the Ruyi Rouge shop in Luoyang, and in my spare time, I also help people with their ailments and write Prescriptions. If I didn't understand such basic things, how could I survive in Luoyang? Besides, just look at who this Wife is. If I didn't have some impressive skills, how could I have married you?"
"That's true!" The fox's expression finally softened.
Xing Ruyi sighed with relief and walked up to the barrier, addressing the person she had spoken to earlier: "I need you to go back to the village and find some Child's Urine for me. It should preferably be from a boy under one year old; if that's not possible, then a girl will do."
"Don't worry, miss. We may not have much in our village, but we can definitely find some Child's Urine," the man replied as he stepped out of the circle. He glanced at the Drought Demon before quickly jumping back inside and cautiously asked Xing Ruyi: "Can we leave this circle?"
"The Drought Demon is already subdued by us. Are you planning to stay here for the winter?"
"Of course not! Staying in this circle would either freeze me to death or drive me mad." The man chuckled as he switched his iron shovel to the other hand. "Let's all go together and gather more Child's Urine. Let's see if this Drought Demon is still so arrogant!"
The remaining young men, who were all strong and eager, were encouraged by his words. Seeing the Drought Demon subdued by the fox, they were curious about how Xing Ruyi and her companions would deal with it. They quickly agreed and rushed back to the village.
Seeing that the Drought Demon was captured, Manager Sun took his sister and those young men back to the village. At this point, only the fox, Xing Ruyi, the village chief, and the chief's father—who had turned into a Drought Demon—remained by the grave pit.
"So you're Village Chief Gou? I didn't expect you to share my surname! Is it common around here?"
"Common? Not at all! In this large village, we're the only family with the surname Gou. I know what you're thinking, miss. To be honest, our ancestors originally came from the same village as your sister's Maternal Family. You know about the Gou Family Mansion, right? My ancestors lived there too, but they were servants rather than masters.
The male head of that Gou Family Mansion was named Gou Hai. My ancestor was his assistant. Later on, when Gou Hai fell ill and died, his wife gave my ancestor some silver to send him away. This isn't really a secret. My family didn't go far; with just that little bit of silver from the Gou Family's lady, we couldn't go very far. So we bought a house and land in this village and settled down. Eventually, we married and had children, continuing our lineage. However, in my generation, we have become a single branch."
Xing Ruyi had only asked casually but was surprised to learn that Village Chief Gou had some connection to Gou Hai from the Gou Family Mansion. However, one was a manager while the other was an assistant; one relied on borrowed life to continue living while the other buried his father in someone else's grave—both had taken dubious paths.
"I'm not interested in your family's matters regarding the Gou Family Mansion. I merely recognized your surname and asked out of curiosity. Right now, what we need is information about your father."
"Miss, you can't be seriously thinking of using that thing against my father? There's an old saying: 'When it comes to death, it's paramount.' Even if you've suffered some grievances at the Gou Family Mansion, it shouldn't fall on us! It's been over a hundred years since our families had any connection. I'm begging you—let my father rest in peace."
"Village Chief, are you joking with me? Take a good look at your father's condition; it's not that we're preventing him from resting in peace—it's that he himself doesn't want to stay buried! By the way, I'd like to ask you something: why isn't your biological father buried in your family's ancestral grave but instead in someone else's coffin? Do you know what that's called?"
"What is it called?" The chief asked earnestly.
"It's called occupying someone else's grave!" Xing Ruyi stated clearly.
Village Chief listened and smiled helplessly, "I have no choice in this matter!"
"What do you mean you have no choice? Looking at you, Gou Village Chief, you don't seem like someone who can't afford a coffin to bury your father," Xing Ruyi said as she walked over to the opened coffin. At the bottom of the coffin, there was a layer of white bones. From the remaining bones, it appeared to be a joint burial for a man and a woman. The two skeletons crushed beneath Village Chief's deceased father were the original owners of this coffin, namely Lai Qi's parents.
"A grave within a grave, a coffin within a coffin, the dead embrace mountains of gold and silver. It seems Gou Village Chief has fallen for the rumors spread by others, hoping to use his father to bring fortune to future generations. Unfortunately, rumors are just that—rumors. Gou Village Chief, you've been deceived!"
"This is impossible! When I asked that Taoist priest to help me with divination, he had no idea that he would—"
"He would what?"
"He... he had no idea I would actually follow his Method to bury my father. If he didn't know, why would he deceive me?"
"As for why he would deceive you, that answer can only be known by Gou Village Chief himself. Right now, based on what we see, burying your father in this coffin has not only failed to bring you wealth but has instead brought misfortune to your village. The prolonged drought in your village over the past six months is caused by your father, and the reason your father cannot rest in peace is due to you, Son. It was you who buried your father in this coffin, turning him into what he is now."
"Are you saying that my father became this monster because he was buried in Lai Qi's coffin? So then, Lai Qi is the root cause of this matter!"
"Hmph! At this point, you're still trying to shift the blame onto innocent people. No wonder your ancestors could only be Gou Hai's Clerk, because even their descendants lack accountability!" Xing Ruyi snorted coldly and pointed at the opened coffin: "If it's Lai Qi's responsibility, then tell me—was it Lai Qi who moved your father's Corpse into this coffin? Who was it that buried their own father here seeking wealth? Was it Lai Qi?"
"I—" Village Chief was momentarily speechless, his face turning red: "I was deceived by others too!"
