In Yun Village, it began to snow.
Xing Ruyi leaned against the window, her gaze passing through the swirling snowflakes and landing on the distant mountains.
The Fox approached, draping a cloak over her shoulders and then wrapping it around herself: "What are you thinking about? Moxuyou, Yun Family, or Tower of Floating Enlightenment?"
"I don't know!" Xing Ruyi raised her slightly confused eyes: "Yin Chensi, I always feel like we are being used by someone."
The Fox patted Xing Ruyi's head: "So what do you want? Do you want to continue being used, or do you want to ignore it and leave those who intend to use us helpless?"
"Can you think like that?" Xing Ruyi widened her eyes.
"Of course!" The Fox smiled: "No matter why we came to the Golden Tang Dynasty, we are already here. Tracing back won't solve any problems. Since we are here, we should make ourselves comfortable. If we don't want to, even if there are countless traps ahead, we can step over them or go around them, leaving those who try to use us staring in disbelief."
Xing Ruyi smiled, opened her arms, and hugged the Fox tightly around the waist: "My fate is in my own hands. No matter what Moxuyou wants to do or who is behind him, as long as we don't want to do it, what can they do to us? Yin Chensi, am I weak? Just because of one sentence from the other side, I got stuck in a dilemma?"
"It’s not that my Fox Demon is weak; it's that my Fox Demon is too kind." The Fox tapped Xing Ruyi's nose: "Do you still want to get involved with the Yun Family's matters?"
Xing Ruyi shook her head: "Knowing it's a trap, should I foolishly jump into it?"
"Not at all. It's precisely because the Yun Family has traps that we need to see what Moxuyou really wants to do. Fox Demon, Moxuyou wouldn't do those strange things for no reason, like transforming into your Grandfather's appearance or finding people who all resemble you."
"That person seems a bit off; maybe he's just bored." Xing Ruyi nuzzled her head against the Fox's chest: "I don't want to deal with these trivial matters anymore. Can we go home? Whether it's to Qingqiu or back to Rouge Shop, let's live peacefully as a couple and have children."
"Alright, we'll live peacefully as a couple and have a little Fox Demon!" The Fox said indulgently, holding Xing Ruyi a bit tighter.
"Why not a fox?"
Xing Ruyi muttered softly, but the fox just smiled. He leaned down and whispered in Xing Ruyi's ear, "So my Wife wants to have two children!"
Xing Ruyi pushed the fox away, her ears turning red.
Just as they were about to leave Yun Village to reunite with Chang Tai and Si Niang, Chang Tai suddenly appeared in Yun Village. Without any pleasantries, he said directly, "Si Niang and Bell are in trouble!"
Last night, the fox had followed Yun Madam, also known as the Fake Village Chief, back to Yun Village with Xing Ruyi and heard some dubious nonsense from Moxuyou.
Chang Tai and Li Mao were originally guarding outside the Village Head's House, but just before those puppet dolls burst out, they saw a sneaky shadow that resembled Bai Luoshui's Old Wei the Grave Robber, so they chased after it.
Yin Yuan was playful and spent the whole night capturing those puppet dolls. As for Si Niang and Bell, they were left in the Carriage outside the village to guard their belongings.
Worried about the Fox Demon, Si Niang had not slept and lit a lamp inside the carriage while slowly doing some needlework. In the middle of the night, an unexpected event occurred. First, a fierce wind swept outside the Carriage, followed by the heavy cotton curtain being blown up, extinguishing the candlelight.
Li Siniang squinted her eyes and leaned out to pull down the curtain that had been lifted by the wind when she suddenly saw an old man dressed in white approaching.
Si Niang's heart sank immediately. She realized she was seeing a ghost.
As she pondered what to do, the White-Clad Elder had already reached her side, even leaning half of his body into the carriage. Although Si Niang was bold, she had never encountered such a terrifying scene; her eyes widened as she sat there, feeling her body grow increasingly stiff.
The White-Clad Elder ignored Si Niang and gradually approached the sleeping Bell. Then right in front of Si Niang, he reached out and grabbed Bell by the neck, opening his gaping mouth to bite.
Si Niang stared in horror, wanting to rush over, but no matter how she struggled, her body wouldn't move an inch; she couldn't even make a sound.
Creaking sounds filled the air as Bell's blood stained the quilt, his neck muscles shattered, revealing white bones beneath.
"Ah~"
Si Niang finally let out a piercing scream, realizing that she was lying on the table. The outside of the carriage was calm, and there was no smell of blood inside either. She wiped the sweat from her forehead, aware that those terrifying scenes might have just been a nightmare.
After calming herself down, Si Niang fumbled to find a match and relit the candle, then reached out to check on Bell's condition.
The blanket was pulled over her head, revealing only a slight bulge. Si Niang shook her head and pulled the blanket down, only to be horrified to discover that it was wrapped around a pile of white bones.
"What?" Xing Ruyi's body swayed slightly as she walked over to Chang Tai and grabbed his arm, asking, "What about Si Niang? Where is Si Niang...?"
"Si Niang is fine; she just suffered some shock and is staying in the carriage guarding that pile of bones."
Xing Ruyi closed her eyes: "Are those bones really Bell's?"
"At that time, Li Mao and I were chasing that shadow when we heard Si Niang's voice and rushed back to the carriage. Li Mao has seen those bones; they belong to a young woman. We also found this in the pile of bones."
Chang Tai took out a string of bells from his waist and handed it to Xing Ruyi.
Xing Ruyi looked at the string of bells, tears streaming down her face. Through her blurred vision, she seemed to see Bell in a pink dress rushing out from the tavern, smiling: "Aunt Ruyi, you’re here! I’ve missed you so much."
Xing Ruyi bit her lip tightly as tears continued to fall. She couldn't understand how Bell could have been taken by an evil spirit when everything had been fine. She clearly remembered that before leaving, she had specifically instructed the fox to set up a barrier around the carriage to keep evil spirits away.
"The fox—"
"I know what you're thinking; it's my oversight. I didn't expect that there would still be such things in this place."
The Fox Demon was hard-hearted, seemingly indifferent to anything other than Xing Ruyi. However, the longer this Fox Demon stayed beside Xing Ruyi, the softer his heart became, first towards Yin Yuan and then towards Bell.
He didn't spend much time truly interacting with Bell, but Bell didn't mind. Every time he saw him, he would cheerfully call out, "Uncle Fox Demon!"
Now, in this world, it seemed that no one would dare to call him Uncle Fox Demon so recklessly anymore.
His hand clenched into a fist. Ignoring Chang Tai still standing in front of him, he transformed into a white shadow and vanished from the room.
"Fox Demon, are you okay?" Seeing the Fox Demon leave, Chang Tai hesitated for a moment before stepping forward and softly asking. Xing Ruyi sniffled, remaining silent as tears quietly streamed down his cheeks.
Chang Tai had never seen Xing Ruyi so sad and distressed. He stood there helplessly, filled with heartache but unsure of what to do.
After a long while of sorrow, Xing Ruyi slowly got up and wiped his tears away forcefully. "Brother Chang, I'm sorry to worry you. The Fox Demon is fine."
"But you don't look fine at all."
Chang Tai regretted telling her about Bell's situation so soon.
"Young Master Yin has left, you..."
"It's okay; I know where he went!" Xing Ruyi said, clenching his hands. "I'm worried about Si Niang; please go back now and help me take care of her. Also, remind Li Mao and Yin Yuan to be cautious; that village is more complicated than we imagined. And Moxuyou is here; what he intends to do seems related to your court. As someone from the public office, you must be extra careful."
"Moxuyou? Is he that Daoist?" Chang Tai's expression changed slightly. "There's something I've been meaning to tell you. When I left Divine Capital that day, Lord Xie Xuan also warned me that Moxuyou is not as simple as we see on the surface; we must remain vigilant."
"Xie Xuan?" Xing Ruyi repeated the name. "Isn't he one of Moxuyou's people?"
Chang Tai shook his head, "For those in the officialdom, there are only eternal interests, not eternal relationships."
"These words don't sound like something you would say, Brother Chang."
Chang Tai smiled wryly, "Fox Demon, everyone has both a positive and a negative side, including Brother Chang. It's just that whether it's Brother Chang or others, they only want you to see our better side.
Being a good Constable was my childhood dream, but once I entered the public sector, I could only follow the rules here. Fox Demon, to protect those we want to protect and to pursue our ambitions, each of us will inevitably compromise in the face of reality."
"Brother Chang, I find your words today very strange."
Xing Ruyi felt a strange sensation in her heart; she instinctively ignored Chang Tai's earlier words and even deliberately tried not to think too deeply about them.
"I know where the fox is and who he is looking for. I'm going over there now. I need to ask that person why they wanted to kill my Bell."
"Fox Demon!" Chang Tai reached out and grabbed her arm, "Don't go!"
"Brother Chang?" Xing Ruyi looked into Chang Tai's eyes, "Let me go, please? I want to avenge Bell!"
Chang Tai hesitated for a moment but still did not let go. "I'm sorry, Fox Demon, but Brother Chang cannot allow it! You know that Brother Chang won't harm you. Moreover, deep down you understand that if you go, you'll only become a burden to Young Master Yin, distracting him and making him cautious. Come back with me first; right now, Si Niang needs you more than avenging Bell does."
Xing Ruyi looked at Chang Tai and suddenly felt that this Brother Chang was also unfamiliar to her.
