"Actually, it can't be called a Medical Hall; it's just a Prescription," the Bearded Man said, glancing around to ensure no one was paying attention to him. He lowered his voice and continued, "To be honest with you, I once tried to get that Prescription from the Hu Family, but it only contained a few common herbs."
"Common herbs?" The Fox's expression changed. "Common herbs could have such miraculous effects that people flock to them?"
"I knew you wouldn't believe me. To tell the truth, I didn't believe it at first either. I thought the Hu Family had seen through my intentions and was deliberately deceiving me with fake medicine. But later, I secretly sent someone to buy it, and the medicine I received was exactly the same. By the way, I even took that medicine to a doctor in Town for examination; it was just ordinary herbs with no miraculous effects. So when I said the Hu Family's medicine had miraculous effects, it's likely that the effective part isn't the medicine but something else entirely.
Just look at the Hu Family's funeral scene; they use large urns for the dead. This isn't just a sign of guilt. I'll tell you secretly—don't mention this to anyone else—I suspect that there are some strange creatures kept in the Hu Family's inner residence. The wives and concubines claim to have been possessed by ghosts and committed suicide by hanging, but they might have been feeding those creatures instead. Since there are no remains left, they deliberately use these large urns as a smokescreen. The Hu Family must be hiding something unspeakable."
The Bearded Man's mouth twitched slightly at both corners.
The Fox listened intently, taking note of everything regarding the Hu Family.
"Is there a young lady with the surname Bai at this Yun Family Gathering?"
"The surname Bai? You really hit the nail on the head there. Although we call it the Yun Family Gathering, there aren't many people with the surname Yun; most are surnamed Hu or Zhao. For instance, I'm fourth in my family and called Zhao Si. The Bai surname is quite rare here; there's only one family with that name. However, it's not a young lady but rather a young Woman who has deep ties with the Hu Family. I've heard that the Hu Family's Prescription came from this Wife." The Bearded Man pointed in a direction. "If you drive along this way, you'll soon see a Dumpling Shop. Although it's not large, it has a steady stream of customers. The owner of that Dumpling Shop is the Bai Woman you're looking for."
"Thank you!"
The Fox replied and drove into Town. Sure enough, as described by the Bearded Man, after traveling a short distance, he spotted a Dumpling Shop similar in size to Si Niang's Tavern at Rouge Shop. A young Woman dressed in white with blue floral patterns was bustling around inside and outside, carrying trays filled with Dumplings being boiled in pots.
As the Fox observed the White-Clad Woman, she noticed him too. She first looked up and examined him closely before smiling and saying, "What a pleasant surprise to meet an acquaintance in a foreign land! With your demeanor, you must be from Qingqiu?"
The Fox recognized her true identity; like Moxuyou before her, she was an adult White Snake and was comparable in cultivation level to himself.
"I indeed came from Qingqiu," the Fox replied as he stepped down from the Carriage.
The woman lowered her head slightly, "This is not Qingqiu, so Bai Jiao won't indulge in any empty formalities. It seems there is another young lady in your carriage. If she doesn't mind, she can rest at the inn for a while and try some of my dumplings, which are truly a taste of home."
The fox glanced inside the shop, where the small space was crowded with customers eating dumplings.
"Is there a quieter place here? My wife is unwell and cannot tolerate all this hustle and bustle."
"If you don't mind my humble establishment, please follow me and your wife to the back hall for a meal."
Bai Jiao said, handing the dumplings in her hand to a servant, and led the fox to the back hall. Just as they crossed the threshold, Bai Jiao's expression suddenly sharpened. With a flash of white light, a snake tail lunged straight at the fox.
"You are of the Azure White Fox clan, sent by the Fox Emperor to capture me and take me back? I tell you, although I, Bai Jiao, hail from Qingqiu, I have long severed ties with you Qingqiu."
"Capture you? I have no such intention." The fox nimbly dodged, using its spirit energy as a sword aimed directly at the White Snake's vital point.
"You Fox Clan are the most cunning!" Bai Jiao exclaimed. With a phantom-like movement, she evaded the fox's sword and dashed toward the dumpling shop's carriage.
"Damn it!" The fox cursed under its breath and immediately transformed into a White Shadow, rushing toward the door.
With a loud bang, the carriage exploded. Xing Ruyi faced off against Bai Jiao, their palms meeting. One radiated a bright spirit light while the other exuded dense dark energy.
"You are from the Ghost Domain? No! Who exactly are you?" Bai Jiao had considerable cultivation; although her last strike was not meant to take her opponent's life, she infused it with some of her power. Yet this seemingly frail girl from within the carriage caught it barehanded.
"And who are you?" Xing Ruyi glared displeasedly. She had been feeling unwell and had just managed to close her eyes for some much-needed rest when she was startled awake by killing intent. Instinctively reaching out to catch the wind from the palm strike near her ear, she opened her eyes to see her carriage had been blown apart.
Xing Ruyi was furious. For someone who "valued money above all," and had just gone through a life-and-death ordeal, having her belongings destroyed at this moment was akin to courting death. Her gaze turned icy as powerful ghostly energy radiated from her entire being.
“Fox Demon, calm down!” The fox leaped forward but was momentarily halted by the Eerie Aura. At that moment, Xing Ruyi had one eye turned a ghostly blue while the other glowed a blood red, her body enveloped in dark energy that spread out like flowers from beneath her feet. She swung her hand forcefully, causing the townspeople to scatter in all directions, and half of the Dumpling Shop was crushed.
Bai Jiao was also enraged; she transformed her hand into a palm and summoned wind as she lunged at Xing Ruyi once more.
Seeing this, the fox quickly positioned itself in front of Xing Ruyi, blocking Bai Jiao's attack and then grasping Xing Ruyi's shoulders urgently, calling out, “Fox Demon, calm down! You need to regain your composure!”
“Yin Chensi, get out of the way! I’m going to destroy this snake! Damn it, how dare she destroy my Carriage!”
Though Xing Ruyi was in a furious state, she still did not forget to accuse the fox of the other party's crimes.
“You can’t kill her!” The fox insisted, quickly tapping Xing Ruyi's forehead.
“Why not? Are you interested in her?” Xing Ruyi shot back, glaring at the fox. “Get out of the way, or I’ll take you down too!”
“I can’t let you! At least not right now! Fox Demon, look closely at her; she might be your ancestor.”
“What nonsense are you talking about!”
Before Xing Ruyi could react further, Bai Jiao spoke up first. She looked at Xing Ruyi with confusion while still maintaining a defensive posture.
“I don’t even know when Qingqiu’s tactics changed. Capture if you must, kill if you will; why go through the trouble of finding such absurd and ridiculous reasons?”
“I wish everything were a lie!” The fox turned to Bai Jiao. “You betrayed Qingqiu because you fell in love with a mortal man? That mortal man’s surname is Yun, and you even had a Daughter with him. To protect your Daughter from being discovered by Qingqiu and because you had given up on that mortal man, you secretly fostered your Daughter with another family.”
“So what if it’s true? You’re sent by Qingqiu; finding out these things is no surprise,” Bai Jiao replied, glancing at the fox. “For Qingqiu to send someone as skilled as you over is already giving me face as Bai Jiao. It’s just a pity that I don’t want to return to that place. If you win today, I’ll die here; if you lose, please take your lady or helper and leave. I won’t make things difficult for you.”
“Yin Chensi, she looks at you and actually thinks you are the Constable of Qingqiu!” Xing Ruyi wrinkled her nose, becoming increasingly displeased. “Step aside, let me peel off her Snake Skin, extract her snake tendons, and then cook a pot of snake soup for you. This reckless snake demon dares to be so self-important as to think you came for her; how shameless.”
“Fox Demon!” The fox sighed helplessly. Seeing Xing Ruyi's pupils return to black, he finally relaxed. “What I just said is true. According to some vague lineage, you are a descendant of her and the old master of the Yun family, so this snake demon can be considered half of your ancestor. If you kill her, it would be akin to killing your ancestor, and those above will definitely take note of it.”
“It’s just another death!” Xing Ruyi said, conjuring a Ghost Fire and throwing it at Bai Jiao. “I haven’t had barbecue in ages; I wonder what grilled snake meat tastes like!”
Bai Jiao dodged and looked at Xing Ruyi with a mix of amusement and confusion, unable to grasp what this seemingly crazy young girl was all about. She seemed human but was filled with ghostly energy, as if she had been cultivating in the Ghost Domain for hundreds of years. Was she a ghost? Yet the spell she just cast carried a hint of demonic energy that felt strikingly similar to her own. Was she a demon? But she clearly appeared to be an ordinary human with a physical body.
Just as Bai Jiao was lost in thought, she suddenly felt a weight on her shoulder. When she opened her eyes again, she saw an exceptionally beautiful child perched on her shoulder. Although just a young child, they held her body firmly in place from afar, rendering her immobile.
“It’s just a White Snake. Look at how angry Mother seems; she might just tear down the Yun family estate,” Yin Yuan said while suppressing Bai Jiao, tilting his head to wink at Xing Ruyi and the fox. “By the way, when I arrived earlier, I saw many people panicking and running out of this town, shouting that monsters were coming. I thought there would be a nice meal to enjoy, but when I got closer, I realized the monsters they were talking about were Mother, Father, and this White Snake. Hmm, a White Snake that has cultivated for nearly a thousand years can barely be considered a feast!”
Bai Jiao was stunned. After nearly a thousand years of cultivation in Qingqiu and almost a hundred years in the human realm, this was the first time she encountered someone who neither wanted to capture nor kill her but instead shouted about wanting to eat her.
“What about those people? You didn’t let them escape to report back, did you?”
“Don’t worry, Mother; how could such a secret as you being a monster be easily revealed? I’ve already put those people to sleep; by the time they wake up, they’ll have forgotten everything. By the way, this snake must be the White Maiden mentioned in the Demon Path, right? She doesn’t look like much of a girl; compared to Mother, she seems much older and not very good-looking.” Yin Yuan examined Bai Jiao’s features honestly; indeed, she bore three or four similarities to the Fox Demon. “Father Fox, could this snake really be an ancestor of Mother Fox?”
“What on earth are you two babbling about?” Bai Jiao exclaimed anxiously, releasing an even stronger demonic power.
