Wedding Night Bliss The sound of music filled the air, and the exquisite decorations adorned the banquet.
Xing Ruyi set down her eyebrow pencil and secretly glanced back at the mirror, only to see Deer Lady seriously scattering something onto the bed. Red dates, peanuts, longan, and lotus seeds, all symbolizing the auspicious meaning of "early offspring." She lowered her gaze and clutched the hem of her dress, feeling a sudden sense of panic about becoming a wife.
Marrying a fox was a natural thing; she had never felt nervous about it even before Deer Lady entered. After all, this was something she had been planning for a long time. But now that the moment had come, everything felt surreal, as if what lay before her was merely an illusion.
Breathe, deep breath. Close your eyes, then open them again. She examined herself in the mirror to mask her inexplicable anxiety. It wasn't until Deer Lady stood behind her that she snapped back to reality and shyly asked, "Where's the fox?"
"According to human customs, the bride and groom cannot meet before the wedding. The shopkeeper is different from Lord Yin, but even so, we cannot mix things up," Deer Lady replied with a smile, pointing outside. "To be honest, Lord Yin has prepared another courtyard outside for this occasion. The bride's departure and the groom's arrival cannot happen in the same place. Right now, Lord Yin is waiting there with Lord Chang and the young master. When the auspicious time arrives, they will come to escort you. You need not worry; just wait calmly."
After tidying up the room, Deer Lady turned and left.
Xing Ruyi watched Deer Lady's retreating figure and sighed softly twice, but unfortunately, Deer Lady did not hear her and quickly disappeared from sight. In the joy-filled bedroom, only Fox Demon remained. She first looked at the festive decorations in the room and then at the neatly arranged dates, peanuts, longan, and lotus seeds on the bed, unable to help but smile.
Since this wedding chamber was not set here, it seemed that what Deer Lady scattered on the bed would not be needed after all. With these thoughts in mind, she approached the bed and noticed how plump the red dates were and how full the peanuts looked. Feeling a bit hungry and seeing no one around, she directly picked up two large ones from the bed and swallowed them whole. In no time at all, half of what had been scattered on the bed found its way into her stomach. Just as she was contemplating how to conceal this from Deer Lady, she heard Pixiu Uncle's voice: "The auspicious time has arrived; Fox Demon should prepare now."
Startled, half a peanut got stuck in her throat, making her face turn even redder. While adjusting her Xipa, she struggled to ease her throat with her hand. Just as she managed to swallow it down, faint sounds of joyful music began to reach her ears.
The joyous sounds echoed down the street, drawing out women who usually preferred to stay at home. A procession of brides adorned in red could be seen stretching from one end of the street to another in an orderly fashion. Beside each carriage walked figures resembling fairies who scattered colorful flower petals they had gathered from who knows where. As a gentle breeze rose, petals danced in the air; if it weren't for the sound of hooves nearby, people would truly believe that deities had descended.
Such a spectacular wedding procession was something even those townsfolk at Yun Family Gathering or Chang Tai had never witnessed.
Early that morning, he and A Niu had gone to prepare at the new courtyard set up by the fox. As soon as they entered, they were greeted by a courtyard full of ethereal young women. Though their attire differed slightly, they all wore simple colors that complemented their otherworldly aura and beautiful features—truly making one think they had just descended from clouds.
Later on, they learned that these young women were not actually celestial beings but were foxes invited from Qingqiu, belonging to the same Nine-Tailed Fox Clan. This was also a surprise gift from the fox to Fox Demon, as well as an acknowledgment of her identity from Qingqiu.
On the street, curious crowds began to gather; especially those unmarried girls craned their necks to catch a glimpse of this groom-to-be. Meanwhile, men were equally eager to see what kind of beauty this new bride would be since every girl scattering petals beside carriages looked like a fairy—what kind of beauty would this new wife possess?
In Ruyi Rouge, it was no surprise that Xing Ruyi sneezed several times in succession. Looking around and seeing that Deer Lady was gone, she reached into her Xipa and rubbed her nose vigorously. Fortunately, she had made her own Rouge and Face Powder, so no matter how much she rubbed it wouldn’t smudge.
When leaving home to avoid attracting unwanted attention or causing disturbances that might delay the wedding procession, both the fox and Yin Yuan wore disguises. It wasn't until they reached in front of Ruyi Rouge that father and son returned to their original appearances.
Then an unexpected scene unfolded before them. They first heard an unending chorus of screams followed by a riot of colors—red, orange, yellow, green, blue—and various voices calling out excitedly filled the air.
Yin Yuan furrowed her brows, touched her beautiful face, and then directed her gaze to the fox's face, saying, "While being good-looking isn't a fault, will our appearance together cause such a commotion that we might get scolded by the Fox Demon’s mother?"
The fox lowered his gaze, slightly curled his index finger, lightly touched his nose, and then gently cleared his throat.
"Are you suggesting that to accommodate these people, I should use a disguised face to marry the Fox Demon?"
"It seems that's not possible!" Yin Yuan replied, also touching the tip of her nose.
A gentle breeze carried a faint scent of gardenia from the entrance of Ruyi Rouge. The fox raised his eyebrows; his dark eyes, smiling gaze, and slightly raised lips all fell into the sight of a woman. The woman's vibrant red makeup, half-lifted Xipa, and the pair of lively eyes beneath it were all absorbed into his own gaze. Their eyes intertwined, and Xing Ruyi chuckled, waving at the fox: "Hi! Dear Future Husband, your wife couldn't wait any longer and came out first."
With that, she hurriedly lowered her hand that had been lifting the Xipa and inwardly scolded herself.
What did she just say? Was she too eager?
Seeing this, the fox also raised his eyebrows and smiled, saying, "Just right; I couldn't wait either."
With that, he gently raised his right hand, and everything in Yun's family gathering except for his wedding procession was frozen in time.
The fox rode over to the Fox Demon, reached out to pull her onto the horse's back, and whispered to her through the Xipa: "Originally, I wanted to follow human customs and give you a grand wedding. But it seems I forgot that my Fox Demon is not an ordinary mortal woman and won't adhere to these earthly rules. Since we are both eager, why not skip those tedious wedding rituals and come home with me right away?"
Xing Ruyi felt a sense of rejection in her heart but found herself nodding involuntarily. Thus, a second unexpected event occurred during the wedding ceremony. The groom rode off with the new wife while Yin Yuan and Chang Tai awkwardly continued with the remaining wedding rituals.
When Chang Tai and Yin Yuan returned to the new residence, the fox was leading the Fox Demon to meet a young couple who looked no older than thirty.
"Who are those two?"
"They are the current Fox Emperor and Empress of Qingqiu. By their appearance, they should be my Father Fox's father and mother—my grandparents. Tsk tsk, there truly isn't any woman in this world as fortunate as my Fox Demon mother. Not only does she have a husband with both looks and talent like my Father Fox, but she also has such an extraordinarily handsome son. Even her future in-laws are so young; it saves many worries for women newly married."
"Worries for newly married women?"
Chang Tai looked at Yin Yuan with some confusion.
Yin Yuan tugged at her lips and said a few words: "The conflicts between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law! First, they bowed to the ground, then to the high hall, and for the third bow, it was the couple's exchange of vows.
At this moment, Xing Ruyi had just exchanged greetings with the fox and was waiting for Pixiu Uncle to announce that the ceremony was complete when she suddenly heard an unexpected voice. "Thank you for your concern, Supreme Deity. Master is doing well; however, Dao often whispers in her ear about matters concerning the young master and Fox Demon," Mo Xu You replied with a smile.
Fox Emperor and the Empress exchanged glances, their expressions changing.
A moment later, Fox Emperor stood up and instantly appeared before Mo Xu You. Grabbing his clothing tightly, he spoke in a cold voice, "I will not make the same mistake again. Go back and tell her that if she dares to have any thoughts about my son again, I won't hesitate to clear out Qingqiu."
