“Supreme Deity, this is serious. Times have changed, and even if Master and Dao still have that intention, they likely lack the ability to do anything. Today, I have come purely to congratulate the newlyweds. What you just said, Supreme Deity, will only make this pair of newlyweds feel anxious.”
Mo Xu You lowered his head.
“Qingqiu has many matters to attend to, and Supreme Deity’s Yuan Shen should not linger in the mortal realm for too long; it is time to return. As for Dao, after congratulating the newlyweds, it should also take its leave, so there is no need for the two Supreme Deities to worry.”
The Fox Emperor snorted lightly, walked up to the fox, looked into his eyes, and said, “Mo Xu You comes with ill intent; you and Fox Demon should be cautious. Moreover, both I and your mother are very pleased. Although you and Fox Demon have ended a past relationship, in our eyes, we still see you getting married. In the future, if you find some free time, do come back to Qingqiu. You know that my time with your mother is not far off.”
The fox's gaze darkened but ultimately said nothing.
Xing Ruyi stood aside, listening to the conversation between father and son, feeling vaguely strange. However, as a new wife and daughter-in-law, she felt it was inappropriate to interject. When she saw the Fox Emperor turn his gaze toward her, she hurriedly bowed her head in respect. When she looked up again, she was surprised to see a smile on the Fox Emperor’s face. Just as she was about to return the smile, a flash of white light suddenly passed before her eyes. The fox quickly covered her eyes with his hand; through his fingers, Xing Ruyi saw that both the Fox Emperor and the Empress had transformed into white light and disappeared from the courtyard.
“Father and Mother did not come.” The fox lowered his hand and explained to Xing Ruyi: “Qingqiu has many matters; Father and Mother cannot leave easily. Besides, Qingqiu and the mortal realm each have their own places of belonging. So today’s visit was merely their respective Yuan Shen manifesting as illusions. Fox Demon, do you mind?”
“Of course not!” Xing Ruyi grasped the fox’s hand and stood beside him: “For Father and Mother to come today is already a great honor for Fox Demon. You know I was worried they wouldn’t take a liking to me; it seems I was overthinking it.”
“You are my choice; how could they be dissatisfied?”
The fox’s indulgent tone nearly made Fox Demon swoon with happiness. Yet a sliver of clarity remained in her heart; she had not forgotten that an uninvited guest had attended her wedding with the fox.
The couple turned together and directed their gaze at Mo Xu You. Mo Xu You was slightly taken aback but then waved his hand: “Could you two please stop looking at me like that? I truly did not come here to cause trouble today. Moreover, I am here alone, while in this courtyard, besides your husband and this Qingqiu’s Supreme Deity, there are also Lord Pixiu, the thousand-year cultivator Deer Shulu, and you.”
Mo Xu You pointed at Yin Yuan and then bowed slightly.
“Among these people, any one of them could easily overpower me. So can you two feel at ease now?”
“No!”
Xing Ruyi showed no mercy toward Mo Xu You; she directly sent a glance toward Deer Lady.
"To have the Father of Qingqiu and the Empress address you as Mo Xu You shows that your origins are more mysterious than we imagined. Today, your uninvited presence suggests that it is not simply to offer congratulations. Let’s not beat around the bush; what exactly do you want?"
"I assure you, I only came to deliver a gift. If the Fox Demon does not believe me, perhaps you could have this Deer Lady and Lord Pixiu keep an eye on me," Mo Xu You said with a squint and a smile. "Please do not let my uninvited arrival disturb your festivities. After all, this A Moment of Spring Night is Worth a Thousand Gold. It is time for the Wedding Chamber to be lit with flowers and candles."
As he spoke, Mo Xu You extended his hands. The Deer Lady was not polite and immediately produced a rope to tie him up securely before pushing him toward Pixiu, saying, "Watch him! Make sure he doesn't interfere with the good fortune of the shopkeeper and Lord Yin."
Bound tightly, Mo Xu You was taken away, and the wedding ceremony that had been interrupted by his arrival continued. However, with Lord Pixiu absent, the phrase "the ceremony is complete" was naturally omitted. Xing Ruyi and the Fox were pushed into the new house by Yin Yuan and others, while Chang Tai remained outside this unexpected commotion, quietly observing everything happening before her.
Inside the new house, there was neither the groom's awkwardness nor the bride's shyness, only a sense of bewilderment.
The Fox broke the slightly awkward atmosphere with a chuckle.
"Are you still worried about Mo Xu You's arrival?"
"A little. But with Pixiu Uncle personally watching over him, I don't think he will cause any trouble tonight."
"Then..." The Fox raised an eyebrow, revealing a slightly mischievous smile. "What are you planning to do with me next?"
"Oh?" Xing Ruyi's mind momentarily blanked but quickly reconnected. Her face flushed as she finally displayed a hint of what a new wife should look like.
"You still haven't told me how you plan to devour me tonight."
The Fox leaned in, firmly encircling Xing Ruyi and pressing her against the door panel. The Fox Demon could clearly feel the heat of the breath escaping from the Fox becoming increasingly intense; her earlobes turned red, her ears flushed, and even her neck felt warm. Unable to help herself, she tugged at her collar, unexpectedly revealing a glimpse of spring.
The Fox lowered his head, placing his warm lips against her delicate collarbone and gently asked, "Are you inviting me to tempt fate?"
"No! I just... just feel a bit hot."
Xing Ruyi broke free from the fox's grasp and instinctively ran to the bed.
The fox smiled again.
"It seems that my lady is not only feeling hot but also a bit tired. Just right, I am quite busy myself and feel tired too. How about we just rest together?"
Xing Ruyi bit her lip, feeling her heart racing in her chest. She then picked up a pillow and threw it at the fox, exclaiming, "Stinky Fox, you're being lewd!"
The fox caught the pillow and looked at Xing Ruyi with an innocent expression, asking with a smile, "Today is a joyous occasion for us. According to the customs of Qingqiu or the Golden Tang Dynasty, the bride and groom are supposed to share the same bed. Could it be that in your world as a Fox Demon, newlyweds are meant to be separated on such a wonderful day?"
Xing Ruyi fixed her gaze on the smile at the corner of the fox's lips and realized she was being teased by her new husband. She took a deep breath, composed herself, and then lay down on the bed in a rather alluring manner, beckoning to the fox, "If you hadn't mentioned it, I would have truly forgotten. Today is a day of harmony; we should certainly go to Wushan together."
Seeing the Fox Demon strike back, the fox felt pleased, knowing that she had momentarily set aside any unnecessary thoughts. He approached her with a wicked smile and asked, "Do you know where Wushan is?"
Xing Ruyi first hooked her right leg and then twisted her waist, quickly pinning the fox down on the bed. The fox frowned slightly and pointed at the items beneath him, saying, "Even if you are eager to go to Wushan with me, you should at least let me clear these things off the bed first. Honestly, it's uncomfortable."
Xing Ruyi looked at the red dates, longan, peanuts, and lotus seeds pinned beneath the fox and couldn't help but laugh out loud. This laughter broke the tension and dispelled any lingering ambiguity from their newlywed status. The two returned to their usual way of interacting.
As Xing Ruyi helped clear away the items scattered by Deer Lady from the bed, she also picked out some good red dates and peanuts that had not been crushed by the fox to eat.
"Now that I'm married, I realize that brides in the Golden Tang Dynasty are much more pitiful than those in my world," Xing Ruyi remarked as she waved a red date in front of the fox's eyes. "In my world, brides have something to eat before they leave home or when they first arrive at their in-laws'. In rural areas, I remember having a bowl of dumplings or something similar; if it's in the city, it's even better with some wedding feast leftovers."
"Is there really nothing to eat in this Golden Tang Dynasty?"
"There is!" Xing Ruyi pointed at the gathered red dates and peanuts. "You can eat these; they symbolize early childbirth. Of course, you can also eat you."
The fox's eyes darkened as he pinned down the Fox Demon who was munching on a red date: "In that case, let’s eat me then. Your appetite is big; I reckon these dates won't be enough to fill you up."
Xing Ruyi widened her eyes, about to retort, but her lips, still slightly moist with the taste of jujube, were captured by the fox. Thus, in the enchanting spring light, even the moon shyly hid behind the clouds.
Newlywed bliss had been interrupted by the fox for half the night. Although Xing Ruyi should have been sleeping in, she found her eyes opening before dawn. The room was cool, and even the fox was not on the bed. She wrapped herself in the blanket and got up, only to see the fox standing by the window with its back to her, seemingly listening intently to something.
“Fox?”
“Shh!”
The fox turned around and instantly reappeared on the bed, bringing along the clothes of the Fox Demon. Just as the Fox Demon began to dress, she heard some sounds coming from above on the roof. The sounds were faint; if one did not listen closely, they might think it was morning birds playing and frolicking.
“Is it a person or something else?” Xing Ruyi wondered to herself, focusing her gaze on the fox's face.
The fox could read minds and thus heard her thoughts, but she could not do the same. She needed to interpret the fox's facial expressions to find her answer.
It’s a person!
Xing Ruyi saw that answer reflected on the fox's face. Upon further reflection, it made sense; only a person would be so cautious. If it were Evil Spirits, they would have likely slipped into the room silently and engaged in a struggle with the fox. The reason the fox had not gone out was likely due to concern over falling for a trick designed to lure it away from its post.
