Fox Demon looked up at him, feeling a bit embarrassed.
She was not the type of person to hold grudges, but for some reason, today she kept getting upset and irrationally jealous.
The fox saw through her inner turmoil and gently embraced her.
"Today's events are partly my fault for not being clear with you. It's just that Fox Demon encountered Sister Tiger, which made me realize something important. When we return to the Golden Tang Dynasty, it may be for more than just that one thing. Sister Tiger is the best example. Intentions can sometimes be elusive. The matter weighing on your heart, let it go."
Xing Ruyi understood that the fox was referring to Moxuyou and Chang Tai, as well as her existence in this world. She did not struggle with the meaning of existence; every individual inevitably has their own burdens upon arriving in this world. Living and being able to live according to one's own desires and thoughts is the most important thing. What she cared about was perhaps only Chang Tai, the man she once trusted and considered a Brother.
"I'm sorry, Fox!"
"It wasn't my intention to leave you behind in the market. I just didn't expect that saving Sister Tiger would take so much time. Sister Tiger is pregnant and injured by a blunt weapon, unable to use Spell for transformation; in her current state, she draws too much attention. I could only bring her here first, ensuring her safety before returning to find you. Fox Demon, today's events are ultimately my fault. But Sister Tiger still needs your help."
"I understand; I will do my best!"
Time was limited, and Xing Ruyi could not afford to linger with the fox any longer. She turned around and looked down at Sister Tiger's wound.
"If this were still within my Xing, I could perform a cesarean section first to deliver the baby, then clean and stitch up your current wound afterward. However, today both the fox and I made a last-minute decision to come out, so we have no tools or medicine with us. Therefore, Sister Tiger, I can only try using my unique abilities."
"Sister-in-law doesn't need to explain; Sister Tiger understands. As long as Sister-in-law can safely deliver my baby, my wound doesn't matter."
Though she said this, Xing Ruyi still lacked confidence and glanced back at the fox.
The fox nodded: "As long as the baby in Sister Tiger's womb is safely born, she can use Spell without hesitation to heal herself. I will also be there to assist her. Don't worry; she will be fine."
Then the fox added: "It's not that I'm confident in Sister Tiger or myself; it's that I have confidence in you."
Xing Ruyi was taken aback and then felt a sense of shame arise within her. It turned out that the fox had remembered every word of her earlier complaints.
Activating her Ghost Eye, she first checked on the condition of the baby inside Sister Tiger. It was a healthy and lively little one, though somewhat lazy. While his mother was in distress trying to save him, he seemed quite comfortable sleeping inside, even stretching his limbs when he sensed Xing Ruyi's presence.
The foot of the guy landed right near the injured area of Sister Tiger, causing her to flinch in pain.
"Just look at this guy who doesn't even care about his own Mother. Don't worry, in the blink of an eye, I'll catch this troublemaker, and then you can give him a good spanking."
Xing Ruyi took a deep breath and said, "I'm going to start now. The process might be a bit uncomfortable, so could you please close your eyes? Otherwise, I really can't bring myself to do this."
Sister Tiger wanted to smile at Xing Ruyi, but due to the pain, her facial features were slightly distorted. After glancing at Xing Ruyi again, she slowly closed her eyes and tried to relax her body as much as possible while lying on the ground.
With bare hands, she pulled a child from the mother's body. The scene looked somewhat terrifying, but for Xing Ruyi, who had done this before, it was relatively easy.
The child, newly separated from the womb, naturally felt a bit disoriented. After casting a resentful glance at Xing Ruyi, he began to cry loudly. Having experience soothing Yin Yuan, Xing Ruyi had some familiarity with these soft and squishy infants. She first took care of the infant briefly, then removed her torn outer garment to wrap him up before bringing him over to Sister Tiger.
"A mischievous little tiger cub."
Sister Tiger opened her eyes to look at her child but was surprised to find that he was crying even more intensely. In a panic, she reached out with her claws but then let them fall dejectedly.
She forgot that she was no longer in human form but was now a true mother tiger; her claws were no longer suitable for touching or comforting her child. A flash of hidden pain crossed Sister Tiger's eyes as she instinctively licked her claws.
"Fox, how is Sister Tiger doing?"
"She has been weakened and will need some time to recover," the fox replied as he injected a beam of light into Sister Tiger's body.
Sister Tiger's wounds healed at a visible speed under Xing Ruyi's gaze, and her tiger form gradually changed until she transformed into a young woman in white clothing, appearing somewhat delicate and fragile.
Once her human form emerged, Sister Tiger softly leaned against the fox's embrace. The fox noticed that Xing Ruyi shifted her gaze toward him and hurriedly explained, "I just used a spell to cover her wounds and transformed her into human form. In reality, her injuries haven't healed yet. This is just to ensure she can be settled down safely."
After speaking, seeing that Xing Ruyi remained silent while looking at him, the fox became anxious: "How about this? You support Sister Tiger while I hold the baby?"
Xing Ruyi smiled slightly and asked, "Can you hold him?"
The fox thought carefully. Although he had already adopted a Yin Yuan with the Fox Demon, Yin Yuan was not an ordinary child. Even in infancy, he behaved like a mature adult, and most of the trouble he caused was intentional. Moreover, Yin Yuan's infancy was very short; in just a few days, he had grown into a toddler because he felt restricted in his movements.
Sister Tiger's child, on the other hand, was a complete mortal. While there might be some residual tiger or Nine-Tailed fox genes within him, it was hardly different from having none at all. Such a fragile baby, who could only cry and fuss, was enough to make him frown, let alone hold.
"Forget it, I'll hold the child for now. As for Sister Tiger's injury, I can see that she is still unable to move well. How about you carry her while walking? That way, we can move faster."
"I won't carry her!" The fox immediately rejected the idea without thinking: "I can't carry her either!"
Sister Tiger endured the waves of pain in her abdomen and smiled faintly: "When I heard that my brother had found a girl he liked, I was puzzled, wondering what kind of girl could capture the heart of my brother, who is as free-spirited as the wind and seems to care little about anything. When I saw Consort Rui earlier, I didn't notice anything particularly special about her; I just felt she was somewhat different but couldn't pinpoint how. It wasn't until now that I understood."
"What do you mean?"
Xing Ruyi raised an eyebrow and looked at Sister Tiger.
"Every creature has its match. Consort Rui, you were probably born to tame my brother. Just look at how scared he was earlier. He doesn't not want to hold me; he simply dares not hold me. Forget it; I won't make things difficult for my brother anymore. I have some self-awareness and know that I am far less significant in his heart than you are, Consort Rui."
"That's good to know." The fox nodded and glanced at the Fox Demon with a somewhat affectionate tone: "Though you are my sister and the Nine-Tailed clan is known for being sentimental yet uninterested in continuing their lineage, you are still my only sister. However unique you may be as a sister, you cannot compare to a wife in terms of value. Moreover, your sister-in-law is named Xing Ruyi; she holds even more weight in my heart."
What the fox said should have been touching, but Xing Ruyi merely frowned and replied: "Why does it sound like you care more about my name than about me as a person?"
"Well! That's missing the point!"
Sister Tiger looked at the fox from the side and felt increasingly sympathetic towards her brother.
"Concern leads to confusion; I'm just worried that I care too much about you and that you'll overthink things."
The fox felt a bit embarrassed and realized that his reaction today was rather foolish—almost disgraceful for someone from the Nine-Tailed clan.
He found an inconspicuous inn in town and chose a relatively clean room to settle Sister Tiger and her child. Since Sister Tiger's injuries still needed attention, Xing Ruyi asked the fox to take care of them at the inn while she went out to buy some necessary medicinal herbs.
As soon as she arrived on the street and was about to ask a passerby where the pharmacy was, she suddenly noticed that all the people were gathering in one direction. Curious, she followed them to see what was happening. As she got closer, she realized that they were all there to watch something.
At the center of the commotion was a wooden cage, inside which was a young man with a refined appearance, seemingly a scholar. He wore a grayish-blue outfit that was stained with blood.
Xing Ruyi sniffed and found that the smell of the blood was similar to that on Sister Tiger.
"Excuse me, sir, could you please tell me why this person is locked in the cage?"
"Miss, you seem unfamiliar; you’re not from Bai Xia Town, are you?"
"You have a good eye; indeed, I am not." Xing Ruyi said, glancing at the cage again. "I’m just passing through and wanted to stop in this town to gather some commonly used herbs and some food for the journey. I ended up encountering this spectacle and became curious."
The man was quite friendly; upon hearing Xing Ruyi's explanation, he first pointed her to a place to eat and then indicated where she could buy medicine before turning back to discuss the situation of the young man in the cage.
"Don’t be fooled by his scholarly appearance; he’s actually a man-eating monster. Did you see the blood on him? According to people from the Government Office, he has actually eaten his own wife and their unborn child."
