I began to subtly reveal some "insider information" about Li Kai's company project to Wang Mei, of course, all of it was carefully fabricated.
"I heard that the market conditions haven't been great lately, and many projects are facing funding issues. I wonder how Li Kai's company is doing?" I asked casually.
Wang Mei took the bait, nervously grabbing my hand and asking eagerly, "Auntie, are you saying... that Li Kai's company might be in danger too?"
I feigned a deep sigh and shook my head. "Well... I'm not too sure. I just heard that many companies recently..."
I intentionally left my statement vague, allowing Wang Mei plenty of room for imagination.
Sure enough, Wang Mei was taken in by my words; her face turned pale, and she fidgeted anxiously.
A few days later, I invited Wang Mei out for tea again. This time, I deliberately wore a well-tailored professional outfit and applied light makeup, looking capable and confident.
"Auntie, you look beautiful today!" Wang Mei exclaimed as soon as she saw me, her eyes lighting up with admiration.
I smiled lightly. "Really?"
"Absolutely! You look several years younger!" Wang Mei said sincerely.
I pretended to casually play with my hair. "Maybe it's because I've been resting well lately; I feel much more energetic."
"By the way, Auntie, are those things you mentioned last time... true?" Wang Mei hesitated but couldn't help but ask.
I looked at her with feigned surprise. "What do you mean true or false?"
"About Li Kai's company..." Wang Mei's voice grew quieter.
I put down my teacup and said, "Oh, you mean that? I've recently heard some rumors, and it seems the situation isn't very optimistic..."
As I spoke, I observed Wang Mei's expression. Her face grew paler, and her hands were tightly clasped together, her knuckles turning white.
I couldn't help but chuckle inwardly. Little girl, you are still too inexperienced to compete with me!
I picked up the teacup and took a gentle sip, feigning a serious tone. "I'm not quite sure about the specifics, but..." I deliberately paused to gauge Wang Mei's reaction.
Wang Mei eagerly pressed on, "But what? Auntie, please tell me!"
I set down the teacup and sighed lightly. "I've only heard that Li Kai's company seems to be facing some issues with their recent project; the funding isn't flowing smoothly. I'm not sure about the details, so don't worry; it might just be a minor problem."
I spoke as if casually, but each of my words struck Wang Mei's heart like a heavy hammer. Her face was pale, and her lips trembled slightly, clearly frightened by what I had said.
"Auntie, what... what should we do?" Wang Mei's voice carried a hint of tears as she grasped my hand helplessly. "Li Kai... he has never mentioned these things to me."
I gently patted the back of her hand and said calmly, "Don't panic; maybe it's not as serious as you think. Li Kai is also doing this for your sake; he doesn't want you to worry."
"But..." Wang Mei wanted to say something more but ultimately held back. She lowered her head, her brow furrowed in deep thought.
Seeing her flustered state made me feel secretly pleased. Little girl, you are still too green to challenge me!
In the following days, Wang Mei seemed like a different person, lost in thought and burdened with worries. She frequently called Li Kai, subtly probing for information about the company, but Li Kai always responded vaguely, avoiding the topic.
Wang Mei's unease grew stronger; she began to suspect that something was truly wrong with Li Kai's company and even worried about her own future. She constantly sought updates from Li Kai, who became increasingly stressed by her suspicions, causing a rift in their relationship.
Wang Mei noticed the change in Li Kai's attitude but was unwilling to accept it. She came to my house, hoping to find some comfort and support from me.
"Auntie, do you think Li Kai doesn't love me anymore? Why won't he tell me anything?" Wang Mei sat on the sofa, her eyes red and clearly having just cried.
I handed her a glass of water and gently reassured her, "How could that be? Li Kai loves you; he just doesn't want you to worry. Men often keep things to themselves and only share good news."
Wang Mei took the glass but didn't drink. She lowered her head and murmured, "But... he wasn't like this before. He used to tell me everything; we never had secrets..."
Seeing her dejected expression filled me with both satisfaction and sympathy. I understood that Wang Mei's love for Li Kai was genuine, but she was too young to know how to nurture a relationship or face life's challenges.
"Xiao Mei," I said, looking into her eyes with sincerity, "love isn't everything in life. You need to learn to be independent and strong. Even if one day Li Kai is no longer by your side, you must have the ability to take care of yourself, understand?"
Wang Mei paused for a moment, seemingly touched by my words. She looked up at me, her eyes filled with confusion and helplessness.
I knew my opportunity had come.
