He didn’t want Xie Wanting’s family to know about their relationship and figured she wouldn’t want to tell them either, so he made up an excuse for why Xie Wanting wasn’t there.
At this moment, it couldn’t be said that Xie Wanting didn’t want to come; it could only be said that she couldn’t get away. Otherwise, her family would have objections.
In rural areas, Xie Wanting might even be accused of being unfilial.
