The dress is ready, and now it's time to head out.
The three of them took a car to Liu Lao's Manor, with Yuling driving.
Originally, Lin Feng didn't plan to let Yuling drive. After all, they were going to a public event. Although Lin Feng usually didn't care much about appearances, he didn't want others to look down on him. That was his thought.
So, Lin Feng intended to rent a driver; it wouldn't cost much anyway. However, Yuling refused and volunteered to drive them, simply stating that there was no need to waste money.
"Yuling, you're wearing such an elegant evening gown; it doesn't seem appropriate for you to drive. How about I drive instead? My outfit is more casual, so it won't be a problem," Lin Feng said, looking at the hem of Yuling's gown that she had rolled up and tossed onto the passenger seat.
"Since it's already like this, just relax and enjoy the ride. You're the boss; even though you don't act like it, you still need to pay attention to your image. It would be even more inappropriate for you to drive," Yuling naturally ignored Lin Feng's suggestion. Now that they were here, she wasn't going to give up.
"Well, I understand your point, but..." Lin Feng wanted to persuade her further. It felt a bit awkward for two men to sit in the back while a girl drove them.
"Alright, stop talking and let me focus," Yuling interrupted Lin Feng before he could finish his sentence, her reasoning sounding quite grand.
Fine, since Yuling had said that, Lin Feng couldn't stop her anymore.
Eventually, their car arrived at Liu Lao's Manor.
After getting out of the car, Lin Feng helped Yuling open the door and then held her gown for her. At first, she was reluctant, but Lin Feng didn't care about that. Given the length of her evening gown today, he figured if he didn't help hold it up, she would end up getting it dirty and that would truly be embarrassing.
"Hey, Lin Feng, I see everyone else has their invitation cards out. Did the President of the Jade Association give you an invitation?" At that moment, Chen Sheng asked as he watched various jade merchants enter with their invitation cards.
"Huh? An invitation? Do we need one of those?" Lin Feng thought for a moment and confirmed he didn't have an invitation card before asking back.
"No invitation? Lin Feng, you can't be serious!" Yuling was startled by Lin Feng's reaction. They had rushed over; if they were turned away because they lacked an invitation card, Yuling couldn't even imagine the consequences—she would be ridiculed by her peers.
In the jade business, appearances were crucial; Yuling understood this very well.
"I'm not joking! Ah forget it; let's just go in. If they dare not let us in, we'll leave. I don't even want to go in anyway," Lin Feng thought again and confirmed he hadn't received any invitation card. He wasn't particularly interested in this Jade Exhibition and said this nonchalantly with an indifferent expression.
"Alright then; if you as the boss don't care, I care even less. Let's go," Yuling thought about it too; since they had come all this way, it would be unsatisfying not to at least take a look inside. Besides, leaving now would feel almost as bad as being turned away at the door. At least if they were denied entry, others might think they had courage; but if they didn’t even dare to try entering, it would make them seem timid.
"Alright, at this point, let's go." Chen Sheng was also a bit worried. He didn't mind losing face since everyone attending this exhibition was more capable than him. However, Lin Feng had already made a name for himself in the Jade Industry; it would be too embarrassing if he were mocked because of this.
"Yeah, let's go. No need to worry," Lin Feng wasn't particularly concerned. To him, this exhibition was optional; he wasn't very keen on attending in the first place.
When they reached the entrance, Lin Feng noticed that Hou Qian was actually in line ahead of him.
Hou Qian was still accompanied by Hong Dou. This couple, known for their exceptional qualities, had just been arguing but were now reconciled.
As soon as Lin Feng spotted Hou Qian and his companion, they also noticed Lin Feng and his group.
Lin Feng saw that they were holding invitation letters as well.
Soon, the guard at the entrance checked Hou Qian's invitation letter and allowed them to enter.
"Wait a moment, let's wait for our friends to go in together," Hou Qian said with a sense of superiority after his invitation letter was checked, addressing the person verifying the invitations.
He had already noticed that Lin Feng and his group did not have invitation letters, so he was eager to see them make fools of themselves.
Although Lin Feng tripping him hadn't caused much harm—just a little pain—he had never been treated like that before and naturally wanted to get back at him.
"Sure, take your time," the guard replied politely since Hou Qian had an invitation letter and was a guest of Liu Lao. They wouldn't make things difficult for him; on the contrary, they were quite courteous.
"Thank you," Hou Qian felt great knowing he could laugh at Lin Feng later for not having an invitation letter. He even became polite towards the guard.
Of course, his politeness stemmed more from the fact that this person was associated with Liu Lao; anyone from the Liu Family deserved his respect.
"Lin Feng, show your invitation letter so they can see it. I'll wait for you to go in together," Hou Qian said to Lin Feng as he reached the verification point. While he pretended to wait for Lin Feng, he was actually reminding the guard to check whether Lin Feng had an invitation letter.
"Sorry, the person who invited me didn’t mention anything about an invitation letter," Lin Feng replied dismissively to the guard without paying any attention to Hou Qian.
"Lin Feng, you actually don’t have an invitation letter? Oh come on, you should have said something earlier! If you want to see the world, you can't just sneak in like this. Let me take you in!" Hou Qian nearly burst out laughing after hearing Lin Feng's words and quickly scolded him.
Kicking someone when they're down was something Hou Qian excelled at.
The jade merchant in the surroundings also focused his attention on Lin Feng and his group, with some people pointing and whispering about them.
"Miss Yuling, since Lin Feng doesn't have an invitation, how about this: you accompany me inside. I have an invitation and can bring someone in," Hou Qian suggested, noticing that Lin Feng indeed lacked an invitation. He glanced at the somewhat nervous and embarrassed Yuling, realizing that this was another opportunity for him.
Hong Dou, who was beside Hou Qian, had learned to be smarter this time. Instead of mocking Lin Feng, she refrained from making any derogatory comments about Yuling, even when Hou Qian extended the invitation to her.
Clearly, after what happened that morning, she had a better understanding of her position in Hou Qian's eyes. She accepted her self-positioning and turned a blind eye to Hou Qian's attempts to flirt with Yuling, even though Yuling was the woman she most wanted to surpass in her life.
However, considering the money and status that Hou Qian could provide her, Hong Dou endured it. She knew that even if she voiced her opposition, it would be futile.
"Hehe... no need," Yuling said, although she felt somewhat embarrassed. She still moved closer to Lin Feng and declined the offer.
"Oh, what's your name?" To Hou Qian's surprise, the person responsible for checking invitations did not immediately ask Lin Feng to leave upon hearing he lacked an invitation. Instead, he asked Lin Feng directly.
"Shuangmu Lin, call me Lin Feng," Lin Feng replied honestly despite his own surprise.
"Oh, wait a moment..." The person looked Lin Feng up and down before speaking again.
Then he picked up his walkie-talkie and began explaining the situation over it.
As a result, the invitation-checking process came to a halt. However, the people behind did not feel impatient; first of all, they were at Liu Family's event and could not act recklessly. Secondly, they were entertained by the unfolding drama and did not find waiting here boring.
Soon, a plump man rushed out from inside. His face glistened with sweat from running quickly; he didn't bother wiping it off as he hurried towards Lin Feng.
"Mr. Lin, sorry for the delay. Please come in," the plump man unexpectedly said respectfully to Lin Feng.
"Oh, you know me?" Lin Feng asked without paying attention to the astonished expressions around him.
"Yes, I've seen your photo. You are a distinguished guest of Liu Lao and naturally do not need an invitation," the plump man finally had a chance to take out a handkerchief to wipe his sweat as he answered.
"Oh, well then, thank you." Upon hearing this, Lin Feng finally understood that he was indeed a distinguished guest. Although he didn't know why that was the case, since no one stopped him, he proceeded inside.
Just before entering, Lin Feng glanced back at Hou Qian, whose expression was quite unpleasant.
"Lin Feng, you're so impressive," Yuling said, feeling a mix of emotions as she followed Lin Feng inside, using this rare tone to address him.
"I don't know either," Lin Feng replied. He only knew that he had inexplicably become a guest of Liu Lao, and he wanted to know more about the situation.
For instance, why had he received an invitation from Liu Lao out of the blue? Why was he able to enter without an invitation? Why was Liu Lao treating him with such enthusiasm?
These were all questions Lin Feng wanted answers to, but he knew that he would find out soon enough.
Hou Qian had mentioned waiting for Lin Feng to enter together, but Lin Feng wasn't in the mood to wait for him. He couldn't be bothered with someone like Hou Qian anymore.
Hou Qian stood at the entrance, and although Lin Feng didn't say anything, just a glance made Hou Qian feel as if he had slapped himself in the face. It was extremely uncomfortable for him, but there was nothing he could do. Although he didn't understand why, he was certain that Lin Feng indeed didn't need an invitation to get in.
As Lin Feng casually strolled with Yuling and Chen Sheng, they encountered many jade merchants along the way. They were very polite and enthusiastic towards Lin Feng. He understood that their attitude was entirely due to the fact that the fat man had gone out of his way to greet him earlier, and they were all engaging in pleasantries. However, it was mainly Chen Sheng and Yuling who were doing most of the socializing.
Lin Feng wasn't incapable of socializing; he just found it tedious. He always felt it was too insincere, and after his rebirth, he didn't want to live a life filled with pretense.
Of course, another reason for letting Yuling and Chen Sheng handle the socializing was that Lin Feng wanted to push them into the spotlight so others would recognize them as his representatives.
Finally, amidst the tedious social interactions, the Jade Exhibition began.
