Of course, while Lin Feng thought of Dong Jie, he did not share what he had just recalled with Chen Li. He knew that he and Chen Li were still far from being that familiar.
"Sister Li, there's something I want to ask you." Since Chen Li insisted on following him home, Lin Feng didn't mind asking her a question he was curious about.
"What question?" Chen Li was quite surprised that Lin Feng wanted to ask her something. She remembered that it was she who insisted on coming to his house; why was Lin Feng now asking her a question? But she still inquired.
"Well, Sister Li, please don't take this the wrong way." Since the question Lin Feng was about to ask might be a bit abrupt, he decided to give Chen Li a heads-up.
"Okay, I'm listening." Since she had already decided to let Lin Feng ask, she wouldn't say anything at this moment and simply responded.
"Then I'll ask now, Sister Li." Lin Feng felt a bit uncertain and spoke again.
"I can't believe a grown man like you is acting like this with a woman." The more Lin Feng hesitated, the more interested Chen Li became in his question, prompting him impatiently.
"Alright, here goes. Is your way of doing business always like it was that night?" This was a question Lin Feng had been wanting to clarify for a while but had never found the opportunity.
"Uh... are you asking about that?" At first, Chen Li was curious about what question could make Lin Feng so hesitant to speak, but now that she understood what he was asking, she found herself unsure how to respond.
She naturally understood what Lin Feng meant; what happened that night indeed gave off a frivolous impression, as if she disregarded shame for the sake of business.
Chen Li understood this point and did not blame Lin Feng for having such thoughts.
"Lin Feng, if I say yes, would you immediately kick me out?" After thinking for a moment, Chen Li did not answer Lin Feng's question but instead posed a counter-question.
"Sister Li, perhaps you don't understand me. Saying I would kick you out is an exaggeration. However, we certainly cannot be friends. I can't control how others behave; it's a mutual agreement. But the people around me—those I consider friends—cannot be like that." Lin Feng directly responded to Chen Li's words. This was his true thought; he couldn't stand such behavior. Whether one called him naive or immature didn't matter; as someone who had been reborn, he really didn't need to make things so complicated for himself.
Since his rebirth, Lin Feng had tried to live freely. He cherished those he could be friends with and did not intend to get to know those he couldn't be friends with. As for those who opposed him, he felt no need to be polite.
This might be what it means to act on impulse. One must ask, how many people in the world can truly do this?
Others may not be able to, and Lin Feng cannot guarantee that he can either, but he always tries his best to live freely.
Therefore, he does not mind sharing his true thoughts with Chen Li.
"Lin Feng, you and I are different. Your world may have many things that I don't. Everything I have is earned through my own hard work. I come from a rural area, and since the first day I arrived in this unfamiliar city, I've been living with a thick skin," Chen Li said, as if recalling memories triggered by Lin Feng's question.
In fact, rather than speaking to Lin Feng, it was more like she was speaking to herself.
Lin Feng did not say anything; he knew that this was not the time for him to speak. His role was simply to listen attentively.
"I am very fortunate to have parents who love me dearly. At that time, everyone in the village thought I shouldn't go to college. They believed that there was no use for women to attend university and that I should just help out at home and wait to get married," Chen Li reminisced.
"But my parents insisted otherwise. They said that since I had passed the entrance exam, they would do whatever it took to support my education, even if it meant selling their blood. You know? I was filled with hope about the outside world, which is why I studied so hard, hoping that one day I could have the life of those city dwellers portrayed on television," Chen Li continued.
"Everyone has dreams when they are young; it's completely normal," Lin Feng replied.
"Later on, my parents supported my education, and I came to Dream University. However, as soon as I got off the train, I started feeling looked down upon. First of all, my clothing made me feel out of place. This city was strange to me," Chen Li continued.
"Hehe... Sister Li, your experience is quite similar to mine," Lin Feng said upon hearing this.
"How so? You and I are alike?" Chen Li thought Lin Feng was a wealthy young man from a well-off family, so she found his words quite strange.
"Hehe... Like you, I had a Foster Mother back in the village who worried every day about how to pay for my tuition. The difference is that I'm an orphan and only had one Foster Mother," Lin Feng recalled his past. He was similar to Chen Li—an outsider in this city without family or relatives, and initially without a place to stay.
"Ah! Is that so?" Chen Li was completely taken aback by Lin Feng's words. How did he suddenly have such a difficult past?
"Why would I lie to you? Yes, this house is mine, and I belong to the car-owning class now. But six months ago, I was still working hard at School just to make ends meet," Lin Feng said as he continued since they were already discussing it.
"Well, it seems like you and I are quite similar. Can you tell Sister Li how you managed to achieve such a transformation?" After hearing Lin Feng's words, Chen Li became even more curious and asked.
"I can't really say, and it's hard to explain. What I can assure you is that my way of making money is completely in line with my conscience," Lin Feng replied with a mysterious smile. Although he and Chen Li shared a similar past, they were not close enough for him to feel the need to fabricate a lie to deceive her; he spoke directly.
"Oh, I see. It seems that agreeing to your earlier request was a wise choice," Chen Li said cleverly. Since Lin Feng didn't want to share, she naturally wouldn't press further, even though she was very eager to dig deeper.
Her curiosity about Lin Feng continued to grow.
"Alright, enough about me. Let's hear more about you," Lin Feng then remembered that his sudden interjection had interrupted Chen Li's story and shifted the topic back.
"My life continued much like yours—no dating, just studying and working part-time, striving to secure a good job after graduation so I can repay my parents. It's that simple," Chen Li explained.
"Is that it? Nothing more?" Lin Feng felt that what Chen Li was saying was somewhat disconnected from what he wanted to know and asked.
"Next comes starting work. You know I'm different from Liu Yan; she's great at advertising design and has already won several design awards at our school before joining the company. I don't have her creative talent, so I can only focus on client acquisition. Honestly, it takes some guts to do that," Chen Li said when she noticed Lin Feng seemed dissatisfied with her answer.
"And then?" Lin Feng pressed on, still not satisfied with what Chen Li had shared.
"I can answer your earlier question directly, Lin Feng. While I do have to put myself out there to acquire clients, I'm not at the point of selling myself short. In this industry, you still need to maintain a good facade; if you walk around with a cold face all day, how can you conduct business?" Chen Li continued.
She wasn't sure why Lin Feng was asking her these direct questions today, but she found herself wanting to clarify things and avoid any misunderstandings.
"Sister Li, are you tired of this kind of life? Do you want to engage in business purely? Or do you want to take the initiative in negotiations—where others seek you out instead of you seeking them? Is that what you want?" Lin Feng asked, pleased with Chen Li's response.
"Of course I want that! Who wants to spend all day putting on a smile for others?" Without hesitation, Chen Li answered Lin Feng's question.
"That's good." Lin Feng knew Chen Li would give him this answer but chose not to elaborate further; some things are better left unsaid.
"Lin Feng, it seems quite late now. Thank you for the coffee," Chen Li said as she glanced at her watch and stood up to address Lin Feng.
Out of curiosity, Chen Li had taken the initiative to ask if she could visit Lin Feng's home. Now that her curiosity had been somewhat satisfied, she felt a bit embarrassed to continue imposing on him. She knew that in the future, there would be plenty of opportunities to interact with Lin Feng, so she would have time to get to know him better.
"Okay, then. I'll walk you down," Lin Feng said as he stood up when he saw Chen Li getting ready to leave. He didn't feel the need to pretend or insist she stay; it was late, and they had both been drinking, so it seemed inappropriate to linger any longer.
"No need to walk me down; I know the way," Chen Li replied when Lin Feng offered.
"Heh heh... Sister Li, don't be so quick to refuse. Knowing the way is one thing, but you should let me show my gentlemanly demeanor," Lin Feng said, maintaining his politeness.
"Heh heh... Lin Feng, I'm suddenly very curious. If my answer doesn't satisfy you, will you still show your so-called gentlemanly demeanor in front of me?" Chen Li teased as she prepared to leave.
"Undoubtedly, I will treat you differently," Lin Feng replied confidently. After all, he was a reborn individual and not someone easily teased by Chen Li.
"Do you treat every woman like this?" Chen Li found herself at a loss for words. She could call him naive like a child, but his abilities were impressive. At such a young age, he had earned everything she saw around her now, which truly impressed her.
It's worth noting that while Chen Li considered herself a successful young professional in the city, she still couldn't afford a house like Lin Feng's.
In the end, Chen Li could only smile helplessly at Lin Feng and allowed him to escort her downstairs.
After going to the garage together to fetch his car, Lin Feng waved goodbye to Chen Li.
