Indeed, Lin Feng's judgment was correct. The beast had just hunched its body to launch itself, clearly not intending to be polite with Lin Feng and the others who had intruded.
"I can't run anymore, Lin Feng," Lin Mei suddenly said as they were running at this critical moment.
"Just hold on a little longer. If it catches up to us, we're all done for," Lin Feng replied, feeling a bit confused by Lin Mei's words. Miss, this is a very serious time; if you can't run, we're in big trouble.
"Forget it, Lin Feng. You all go ahead without me. Just remember to bring back the Ginseng for my Grandpa. Grandma is still waiting to take it," Lin Mei seemed to realize the consequences of her inability to run and began to "arrange her affairs" with Lin Feng.
"You idiot." Hearing this, Lin Feng felt both touched and angry. After cursing, he picked up Lin Mei and flipped her onto his back.
This woman was actually thinking about gathering Ginseng at a time like this. Didn't she know that life is precious?
So, Lin Feng unceremoniously carried her away, disregarding any notions of propriety; at this moment, they were irrelevant.
As Lin Feng carried her, Lin Mei instinctively struggled but seeing how serious he was while running, she gave up. If possible, no one wanted to die; after all, she still had a bright future ahead and many wishes yet to fulfill.
At this point, Lin Mei wasn't heavy at all. With her on his back, Lin Feng was still able to run without any impact on his speed. Eventually, he reached the place where they had parked their vehicle.
Earlier, for convenience in entering the mountains and not anticipating how dangerous gathering ginseng would be, they had left some heavy weapons in the car. Now that they knew there was a giant snake nearby, they naturally needed to retrieve their weapons.
Seeing that the giant snake had not followed them any longer, Lin Feng and the others let out a sigh of relief and took a moment to catch their breath.
"Damn it, that thing is really powerful." Even now, just thinking about the giant snake made Lin Xing break out in a cold sweat. That snake didn't even flinch at bullets; it would be no easy task to deal with.
"Lin Feng, you've seen a lot; what is that creature?" Lin Xing asked Lin Feng, recalling how he might have been done for if not for Lin Feng's repeated warnings.
"If I'm not mistaken, that creature should be the legendary Spirit Beast," Lin Feng thought for a moment before responding.
"Spirit Beast, like those mentioned in novels?" Everyone had heard of "Divine Beasts," but those were only found in stories, so they asked for clarification.
"Hehe... although it's called a Spirit Beast, it's not as formidable as those described in novels. It's just tough-skinned and meaty. The firearms we brought should be able to handle it," Lin Feng explained as he noticed everyone associating it with the mythical creatures from stories.
Upon hearing this, everyone finally relaxed. If they really encountered a novel-like Divine Beast capable of turning mountains upside down, their mission to gather ginseng would become far too difficult.
"I see that with this guy delaying us, it's getting dark soon. When night falls, it won't be much of a problem for us since snakes can't see. We might as well set up camp here and wait until early tomorrow morning to deal with that creature properly," Lin Feng suggested, noting the dimming light. According to their original plan, they should have already returned with the ginseng, but now that the giant snake had disrupted their plans, they had no choice but to wait until tomorrow.
"Yeah, that's fine. Today wasn't a total loss; at least we know that creature is out there. We'll have a better idea of what to expect tomorrow, which will increase our chances of success," Lin Xing agreed after glancing at the sky and realizing Lin Feng had a point.
Seeing that both Lin Xing and Lin Feng were in agreement, the others naturally had no objections, so they decided to stay put.
Since they had driven there, they didn't need to set up tents or anything; they could just sleep in the car.
They opened the car doors and settled inside. Everyone took out some prepared food and began to eat ravenously. After a long day of work, everyone was hungry.
As they were eating, Lin Feng suddenly noticed that Lin Mei wasn't eating.
"Lin Mei, why aren't you eating? Aren't you hungry?" Lin Feng asked.
"Oh, I didn't prepare anything. You all go ahead and eat," Lin Mei replied vaguely.
"Didn't prepare anything? Isn't this food? You should eat something; after all, it's been a whole day without food, and we just ran for our lives. How can you have the strength to gather ginseng if you don't eat?" Lin Feng didn't understand Lin Mei's reasoning and handed her a vacuum-sealed chicken leg.
"Right, Mei'er, I didn't consider that. Your stomach isn't great as it is, and after today’s scare, you probably can't handle these cold foods right now," Lin Xing chimed in while munching on his food, realizing that Lin Mei shouldn't eat cold food at this moment.
However, they hadn't planned on camping outside, so they only brought some prepared food as a backup. Now being in the mountains without any heating tools made things difficult for Lin Xing.
"How about this, Mei'er? Why don't we head back? We've figured out the situation here anyway. Next time my brother Lin Feng and I can come back," Lin Xing suggested after thinking it over.
To be honest, Lin Mei really wasn't suited for this kind of hardship; if she couldn't even eat cold food, how could she participate in such a risky endeavor?
But when Lin Mei heard Lin Xing's suggestion, she immediately stopped him. "I'm fine; I just need to rest for a bit. You all eat."
After saying that, she ignored whatever else Lin Xing had to say and simply sat back in her seat, pulled her jacket over herself, and closed her eyes.
Lin Feng understood that this was just how Lin Mei was. Since she insisted on coming along initially, there was no reason for her to go back now.
Looking at Lin Mei's stubborn face, Lin Feng suddenly found her stubbornness somewhat endearing.
"Alright, since we're here, there's no need to go back. You all eat, and I'll go find something warm for Lin Mei." With this thought in mind, Lin Feng decided to get some food for Lin Mei. He was sure that Lin Mei was hungry; she had just been afraid to say so earlier because Lin Xing might insist on taking her back.
"Lin Feng, it's late. I'll go with you," Lin Xing said upon hearing this, knowing that Lin Feng was about to head out.
"No need, it will only take a moment. You should stay in the car to protect our young lady," Lin Feng replied, waving his hand dismissively. Catching a small animal was nothing new to him, so he opened the car door and stepped out.
Seeing that Lin Feng was insistent, Lin Xing didn't press the issue any further. He had noticed earlier that Lin Feng seemed quite familiar with surviving in the forest, so he let it go.
Once outside, Lin Feng picked up a few medium-sized stones from the ground. To catch wild game, having some stones was essential; using a gun would be less effective since they would need to eat the game later. If he shot it, he would have to deal with removing the bullet afterward.
Compared to a gun, stones were much more suitable. They could knock out the game without leaving anything behind that needed cleaning up—perfect.
However, throwing stones required both strength and precision. But Lin Feng wasn't worried about that at all. With his current mastery of Internal Energy and strong Mental Power, hitting a target with stones was very easy for him. In fact, he could even control whether the stone penetrated the animal's body.
It was clear that Lin Feng had a good grasp of his strength now.
Today, luck was on Lin Feng's side. Just after getting out of the car and not walking far, he spotted a squirrel and a rabbit.
After thinking it over, Lin Feng decided to catch both of them. After all, not only did Lin Mei need something warm to eat, but he and the others wouldn't mind having a bit as well.
Since he was here, Lin Feng didn't hold back and quickly took down the two unfortunate animals.
Aiming carefully, Lin Feng threw two stones with precision and knocked down both small creatures.
After dispatching them, he went to a nearby stream to skin and clean them before carrying the prepared game back to where Lin Mei and the others were.
On his way back, he also gathered some dry branches. Of course, he stored them in his magic ring since there was plenty of space inside. He made sure to collect enough firewood for warmth tonight.
In the middle of winter, having a fire for warmth was certainly better.
"Someone come help; I've brought back the food. The rest of you stay alert," Lin Feng called out as he tossed the dry branches onto the ground after retrieving them from his magic ring.
Upon hearing this, Lin Xing got out of the car while his other two subordinates had already been on guard nearby. After all, they had just encountered that large snake and were not about to let their guard down.
Seeing Lin Xing approach, Lin Feng directly handed him the cleaned game meat, then started preparing for the barbecue himself.
Lin Feng had done this kind of work many times during his past life as a mercenary. Over time, his grilling skills became exceptional; after all, practice makes perfect, and Lin Feng was no fool.
After setting up some dry branches and lighting a fire, he completed the entire process smoothly, which made Lin Xing nearby admire him and say, "Your movements are quite nimble."
"I used to play around a lot as a kid, often going out to roast sweet potatoes in the wild. Later on, I also grilled these animals to eat," Lin Feng replied while tending to the fire.
Once the fire was going well, Lin Feng took the live animal from Lin Xing's hands, skewered it on a stick, and began roasting it over the flames.
Of course, at first, he didn't need to hold it; earlier, Lin Feng had set up a simple wooden rack where he could just place the animal on top to cook.
Seeing that Lin Feng was all set up, Lin Xing handed him a cigarette and lit one for himself, starting to puff away.
Taking the cigarette from Lin Xing, Lin Feng lit it as well. It had been a long time since he smoked, but at that moment, he didn't refuse.
After all, with Lin Feng's current body, the saying that smoking is harmful to health didn't apply to him.
"Brother, I rarely admire anyone, but you are one of them. Thank you," Lin Xing said solemnly to Lin Feng after taking a few puffs.
