We were active for a while in the nearby open space when suddenly, a melodious song floated over from not far away.
" Bright Moon, Calm Wind, the leaves cover the window frame.
Crickets chirp, just like the sound of strings.
Sound of the Qin tight, Sound of the Flute gentle, Rowing Boat ferrying lads.
Delicate Flower, Flowing Waters, more rippling than Spring Water..."
As I listened to the song, I found it a bit strange; it sounded like a children's rhyme. How could anyone in this small town be singing such a song?
Following the sound, I looked over and saw an old man sitting on the ground not far away. He appeared to be in his sixties, with white hair and a white beard.
He wore a coarse cloth robe, with a fabric belt tied around his waist, and simple cloth shoes on his feet. He looked very plain.
Next to him was a bamboo basket filled with Zongzi, and beside it was a small charcoal stove with a pot of thin porridge simmering and steaming.
The old man sang as he picked up a Zongzi from the basin beside him, peeled off the bamboo leaves, dipped it in some sugar syrup, and began to chew on it.
The Zongzi was clearly freshly made, fragrant and enticing, and combined with the sweetness of the sugar syrup, it emitted an irresistible aroma.
Sister Thirteen caught a whiff of this delicious scent and couldn't help but exclaim, "It smells so good! I want to eat Zongzi!"
I chuckled and said, "Then you should go ask that old man if his Zongzi is for sale."
Sister Thirteen responded with a cheerful acknowledgment and quickly walked over.
The old man stopped singing when he saw Sister Thirteen approaching, smiling warmly at her.
Sister Thirteen reached the old man's side, looked at him, and sweetly said, "Grandpa, your Zongzi smells so good."
The old man clearly appreciated Sister Thirteen's words and replied with a smile, "You’re quite the charming little girl. Here, give it a try."
Sister Thirteen exclaimed happily, "Sure!" As she spoke, she picked up a Zongzi, peeled off the bamboo leaves on top, dipped it in a bit of Sugar Syrup, and took a bite.
The Zongzi was fragrant and chewy, and surprisingly filled with Candied Fruit, making it incredibly sweet and delicious.
Sister Thirteen finished the Zongzi in just a few bites and looked at the old man with eager eyes, saying, "Grandpa, could you give me a few more?"
The old man laughed heartily and said, "Little girl, while this Zongzi is tasty, you shouldn't be greedy."
Sister Thirteen pouted and replied, "But I really want to eat more."
After thinking for a moment, the old man said, "Alright then, since you want it so much, I'll give you another one."
Sister Thirteen joyfully exclaimed, "Thank you, Grandpa!"
With a smile, the old man handed another Zongzi to Sister Thirteen.
Sister Thirteen accepted the Zongzi and said gratefully, "Thank you, Grandpa!"
The old man smiled and said, "No need to thank me, just eat."
Sister Thirteen nodded and returned with a Zongzi.
I looked at her and smiled, "Why did you only bring one?"
Sister Thirteen seemed a bit embarrassed and said, "Grandpa said we can't eat too much."
I chuckled and replied, "I see."
Sister Thirteen looked at me and said, "Sir, this Zongzi is really delicious. Would you like to try some?"
I nodded and said, "Sure."
Sister Thirteen exclaimed happily, "I'll get it for you."
I shook my head and said, "No need, I'll go myself." With that, I jumped off the horse and walked up to the old man.
Seeing me, the old man smiled and said, "Young man, come try some too."
I smiled back and said, "Thank you, sir." With that, I picked up a Zongzi, peeled off the bamboo leaves on top, dipped it in some sugar syrup, and took a bite.
