"Oh, Director Jiang, you should have a few drinks too! By the way, is this your girlfriend?" Principal Hua pointed at Lin Yin.
"Hello, Principal Hua!" Lin Yin quickly greeted, neither confirming nor denying. Jiang Chen did not respond either; he simply pulled Lin Yin to sit beside him.
Principal Hua took it as confirmation that Lin Yin was Jiang Chen's girlfriend and thought to himself: She's really beautiful!
The others were presumably relatives of the bride and groom, whom Jiang Chen did not recognize, so he sat down without acknowledging them. Soon, all the guests arrived, and when the time came, the wedding ceremony officially began. The process was mostly standard: the host's introduction, speeches from the officiant, the reading of the marriage certificate by the witness, the exchange of rings by the bride and groom, three bows, speeches from representatives of both sets of parents, speeches from guest representatives, the couple opening champagne, cutting the cake, and drinking from a shared cup.
The wedding ceremony ended at seven o'clock, and the banquet officially began. Each table started feasting heartily.
Before long, the bride and groom began to toast each table. Since they were seated at the first table, they started toasting from the second table.
Toasting had its own rules; at some tables, the bride and groom could toast together, while at others they could not. At the second table, it was clear they had to toast one by one. Moreover, who they toasted first indicated who held more significance at that table rather than following seating order.
Jiang Chen was the youngest at this table and was theoretically supposed to toast last. However, for some reason Teacher Gong suggested to Wang Huanhuan that they should toast Jiang Chen first. Immediately, some people were unwilling.
"Huan Huan, I’m your uncle! You and Gong Shengli should toast me first!" said a middle-aged man. Jiang Chen understood that he was Wang Huanhuan's uncle.
"Teacher Gong, since he is Huan Huan's uncle, you all should toast him first! I’m your student; you should toast last!" Jiang Chen didn’t want to put Teacher Gong in a difficult position nor did he want to take center stage.
Since Jiang Chen said so, Teacher Gong and Wang Huanhuan had a way out and went to toast that uncle instead. They raised their glasses and said, "Uncle, thank you for coming to our wedding; we hope you will take care of us in the future!"
Because Teacher Gong and Wang Huanhuan were standing while toasting him, conventionally the person being toasted should stand up too. However, that uncle remained seated with a sullen face and said coldly, "Hmph! I don’t need you to toast me. Gong Shengli, you should toast your student first!"
It turned out that other relatives initially didn’t know what kind of person Jiang Chen was. After hearing Jiang Chen say he was Teacher Gong’s student earlier—including some relatives like the uncle—they felt quite uncomfortable. They thought it was inappropriate for Gong Shengli and Wang Huanhuan to want to toast a student first. Thus, the uncle got angry and wanted to put Gong Shengli in his place.
Gong Shengli felt truly embarrassed but as Wang Huanhuan’s uncle he couldn’t refuse to toast; he forced a smile and said, "Uncle, I was confused earlier; I wanted to follow seating order for toasting. I apologize!"
"Apologize? Fine! Drink three cups first!" The uncle still looked displeased.
Three cups? They had just started toasting and now had to drink three cups? How could they possibly finish all the drinks after that? It seemed likely that Teacher Gong and his groomsmen would end up drunk.
Jiang Chen knew Teacher Gong couldn’t handle those three cups; even if he could drink them, he shouldn’t! Because aside from Principal Hua, Jiang Chen, and Lin Yin at this table, everyone else were distant relatives like aunts and uncles. If they had to penalize Teacher Gong with three cups of liquor—what about their uncles? What about their aunts?
"Uncle," Jiang Chen quickly interjected, "since today is your niece's big day, why don’t you be generous and not make things difficult for her husband? As for the penalty drink, I can drink on behalf of Teacher Gong; how does that sound?"
"You? Why should you drink on his behalf? You’re not even a groomsman. But since you’re Gong Shengli’s student drinking for him is fine—but it has to be doubled! No wait—drink three times!" The uncle seemed already displeased with Jiang Chen; now that he spoke up he decided to make things difficult for him. Three times meant nine cups—let’s see how he handles that!

The uncle picked up his glass, finished the drink, turned the glass upside down to show everyone, and said, "Look, I've finished mine. Now it's his turn!" After saying that, he looked at Jiang Chen smugly, waiting for him to make a fool of himself.
Jiang Chen showed no fear and filled his glass with liquor before drinking it down. One glass, two glasses... nine glasses!
