He sighed.
He whispered, "We encountered a landslide."
I covered my mouth and trembled all over.
I silently recited, "Huang Xin, I am waiting for your return."
The entire city was engulfed in sorrow.
The government gave up the pursuit; they abandoned their southward advance.
They split from Governor.
Governor redeployed elite troops to the north and headed northward.
The northern army ran out of food. They couldn't even dig up wild vegetables.
There was no support.
The government ignored them.
In early November, the general in the north died.
Jin Ming died.
Huang Xin's Volunteer team was the last support; they were ambushed halfway and nearly all perished.
Out of fifty thousand soldiers, fewer than a few hundred survived.
The deputy general in the north broke through the encirclement with the wounded and came here, seeking refuge with the only general still resisting foreign enemies.
They were ordered to garrison here.
The general had less than twenty thousand soldiers left under his command, and they faced continuous defeats against Governor's attacks. Despite their desperate resistance, it was like striking a rock with an egg.
Outside New City, there were only Governor's troops.
They occupied key transportation routes, and people were going to be trapped here.
I closed the door and sat by the bed.
I gave Sister a sip of hot water.
Sister was ill.
She had been burning with fever for three days and was in low spirits.
I couldn't afford to cry.
I did my best to buy some food and medical supplies.
While Sister fell into a deep sleep, I drew two circles with Gousheng in the living room and burned some paper money for the general and Huang Xin each.
"Zhao Di..."
Sister woke up.
She weakly said, "Zhao Di."
She pulled her hand away.
She gave herself a hard slap.
She cried, "I caused you harm."
"Don't blame yourself."
I shook my head.
I sighed.
I sadly said, "This is a chaotic world; no one can predict anything."
"I..."
Sister opened her mouth.
She wanted to say something, but she didn't know what to say.
All she could do was wipe her tears.
I began to hum a tune.
I hummed the little song our mother taught us.
Sister was stunned.
She looked at me, her expression dazed.
Sister's eyes turned red.
She choked out, "Zhao Di, sing for me."
I nodded.
I continued to hum the song.
Another year passed.
In this year, New City experienced a financial crisis.
Many businesses went bankrupt, and many workers lost their jobs.
New City's grain production decreased, and food prices rose significantly.
The market in New City saw prices increase due to supply and demand imbalance.
Migrant workers took to the streets and alleys to make a living.
They took on odd jobs.
Sister and I also took on odd jobs.
We earned very little, just enough to get by.
We endured the harsh winter.
We survived the spring.
We made it through the summer.
But we couldn't withstand the autumn any longer.
We were bullied, and we fought back.
We couldn't defeat them.
I protected my head and curled up my body.
I was kicked all over, feeling pain everywhere.
I had a nosebleed and a cut on my lip.
Sister got into a scuffle with someone.
She was beaten until she was covered in blood, collapsing to the ground.
I carried Sister to the hospital.
The doctor told me, "Just take her home to rest!"
In the evening, Gousheng went to the bathroom, and suddenly he let out a heart-wrenching scream.
I rushed out of the room and saw Gousheng kneeling on the ground, holding Sister in his arms, crying uncontrollably.
Sister stood up, holding a bloody pair of scissors in her hand, with hair scattered all around her feet.
Her face was covered in countless scratches, blood flowing down her neck.
I walked towards Sister and struggled to speak, "Sister, does it hurt?"
Sister smiled at me, "It doesn't hurt; I know what I'm doing."
Sister smiled again, "I want to be our family's protector."
With her face full of scars, Sister walked out of the house.
Sister went with me to the outskirts of the city.
Evergrain City is in a bad location; there is no food left in the city.
