"Yes, it was her. I mistook her just now."
The police chief looked at Sister, intrigued.
Sister glanced at the police, positioning herself behind me.
The police chief smiled at Sister.
"You are smarter than your sister."
He looked at Sister and touched her face.
I pushed Sister aside and faced the police.
"I am Jin Ming's girlfriend, and I know where he hid the company secrets."
I looked at the police and began to lie.
"If you let them go, I'll tell you."
The police stared at me, narrowing his eyes.
"You are lying to me."
The police punched me in the nose and started hitting me.
He grabbed my hair and struck me with a baton.
He kicked me, stomped on me with his feet.
Governor led his men to beat me for a long time until I fell silent, then he stopped.
He waved his hand, instructing his subordinates to throw me onto a motorcycle.
"Retreat," he said.
I lay on the motorcycle and opened my eyes.
I saw people running toward the city gate.
Turning my head, I saw many soldiers.
Hope ignited within me—could reinforcements be coming?
Before long, shouts of battle erupted from the hillside in the distance.
A group of people in simple protective gear rushed down, unarmed like a tide.
I widened my eyes as I recognized them.
It was Volunteers.
They charged toward the city gate with wooden sticks and tools in hand.
The Volunteers ignored the guns held by the Invaders and lunged forward.
Gunfire erupted, and many fell to the ground.
But there were too few Invaders; they stood no chance against the overwhelming tide of Volunteers.
The invading commander glared at the Volunteers, gritting his teeth.
He grabbed me by my hair and lifted me up forcefully.
"Don't come over here!" The Invader looked at the Volunteer and began to retreat. "Or I'll kill her!" The Volunteers stopped in their tracks, afraid to advance. The invader leader grabbed me and mounted a motorcycle. "Hurry, let's go!" he shouted. I lay on the motorcycle, clutching the hairpin tightly. I turned around and stabbed the invader leader in the waist with it. He winced in pain and loosened his grip. We both fell off the motorcycle. I landed on top of him and started hitting his face. The Volunteers rushed forward and subdued the invader leader. I collapsed on the ground, my vision starting to fade, and my legs lost feeling. I closed my eyes and drifted off to sleep. But in that final moment before closing my eyes, I saw a familiar figure. He held a rock and struck the invader leader in the eye. I smiled at him before losing consciousness.
"Zhao Di!" I heard a voice and opened my eyes. Sister was holding me, covered in blood. "Sister." I looked at her and smiled. I had been unconscious for a long time. The Volunteers took me to the community clinic. The doctors examined me, shook their heads, and told me to go home. Kind neighbors pooled their money together to arrange for my transfer to another hospital. Sister refused to give up; she stayed by my side. She wiped my hands and face, fed me medicine, and talked to me. She told me that if I died, she wouldn't be able to live either. We were both trafficked together, fled together, endured beatings together, and suffered from hunger together. We relied on each other for survival.
She cannot lose me.
She is talking to me, mentioning General Wang.
"Do you know, Zhao Di?"
"General Wang is not dead."
"The people sent by the company did not seize his family business."
"General Wang fought back; he reclaimed the company."
"Now, the company is undergoing massive layoffs; they are too busy to care."
"General Wang is so smart."
"He has not been defeated."
"Zhao Di, please wake up soon."
"I miss you so much."
"I want to buy you a lot of delicious food."
"If you don't wake up soon, I will eat everything myself."
My sister's words echo in my ears. I want to open my eyes; I want to sit up.
But I can't move; it's as if I'm trapped.
I struggle desperately; I shout with all my might.
But I cannot make a sound; my whole body is immobile.
I hear hallucinations in my ears.
I hear my mother's voice.
Mom softly hums a song while holding me.
She shakes me gently and sings.
I feel her embrace; I smell her scent.
The scent of my mother envelops me, but then she pushes me away with force.
