I opened my eyes; I had woken up.
"A miracle!"
"She actually came back to life!"
Sister held me, crying and laughing at the same time.
"Zhao Di."
"You finally woke up."
From Sister and the old doctor, I learned about the situation.
General Wang pressed on with his victory, and the entrepreneurs in the south supported General Wang's family business to restore their reputation.
I felt great.
I lay in bed, unable to move.
But I wasn't anxious; it was just a temporary inability to move.
Like dough, it becomes more resilient after being kneaded.
I stayed in the clinic for the entire winter.
As early spring arrived, I took my first shaky steps out of the clinic.
Sister stood in front of me, looking at me.
She burst into tears and knelt on the ground.
"Mom!"
"Thank you for blessing Zhao Di!"
She kept bowing her head, her face covered in tears.
She looked up at me and smiled again.
I walked out of the clinic, lifting my head.
A flock of migratory birds flew by, calling out.
I raised my head and opened my arms.
It felt like I had been reborn.
The war was over.
I carried a wooden basin to hang the clothes out to dry.
A young officer rushed into the camp.
"We won!"
"They signed the peace treaty!"
He held up Telegram and shouted loudly.
The soldiers cheered and jumped for joy, hugging each other and laughing.
I stood frozen in place, watching them.
It had been three years.
Sister and I had spent three years in the military camp.
We did odd jobs for the soldiers and helped with transfers.
We followed the troops as they moved from place to place.
We left New City and arrived at the front lines.
We witnessed the final victory with our own eyes.
The national leader secretly returned to the capital, and General Wang also led his troops back triumphantly.
He still remembered the Volunteers, distributing bonuses to everyone and arranging jobs for them.
"Two of you."
General Wang's confidant approached Sister and me.
He conveyed the national leader's wishes, instructing us to meet with General Wang.
Sister and I exchanged glances, confused.
We were just refugees; why would the leader want to see us?
We dared not refuse, so we got into General Wang's car.
General Wang sent a secretary and bodyguards to escort us to the capital.
Looking out at the scenery, we felt heavy-hearted.
We didn't know what awaited us ahead.
Upon arriving in the capital, we stood in front of the government building.
Our hearts were heavy as we walked with slow steps.
"Two of you."
General Wang was waiting for us outside the conference room.
He smiled at us, trying to comfort us.
"There's no need to be afraid."
"I will protect you."
He led us upstairs and brought us to the door of the conference room.
"Please enter."
He pushed open the door.
As we entered the conference room, we felt extremely nervous.
The secretaries instructed us to sit down and wait.
We sat in our seats, heads bowed.
The door opened, and the leader walked in.
We stood up, keeping our heads lowered.
"Which one of you is the Volunteer recommended by the General of the Northern Defense?"
The secretary's sharp voice rang out.
"That's me."
My Sister and I replied in unison.
"Hmph."
The leader snorted coldly, his face filled with displeasure.
We trembled in fear, not daring to speak.
He took his seat at the head of the table.
General Wang also entered; he simply nodded briefly.
General Wang stood to the right front and did not take a seat.
"Volunteer?"
The leader, seated at the head, looked at us with cold eyes.
He mocked Sister's face, clearly displeased.
"What kind of woman is fit to be someone else's mistress?"
Sister's expression changed, and she quickly knelt on the ground.
"Please, Chairman, grant us a meal."
She kept bowing her head, trembling all over.
