The ambulance rushed in, taking Zhou Ziran and the shaken Gu Yu to the hospital. The glaring red lights flashed in the hospital corridor as time ticked by. Gu Yu anxiously paced back and forth at the operating room door, her hands tightly clasped together, her nails digging deep into her palms.
"Xiao Yu, don't worry too much. Ziran is blessed; he will be fine," Zhou Ziqi comforted her, though his own face was pale and his palms were sweaty.
Lin Wei stood in the corner of the hospital corridor, watching everything unfold with a ghostly complexion and trembling body. She had witnessed the entire car accident and saw Zhou Ziqi rush towards Zhou Ziran without a second thought. In that moment, it felt as if her heart was being tightly squeezed, making it hard to breathe.
"How could this happen? How could this happen?" Lin Wei murmured to herself, tears streaming down her face. She never imagined that her moment of impulse would lead to such serious consequences.
Finally, the lights in the operating room went out, and the doctor walked out, removing his mask and wearily saying, "The patient is out of immediate danger, but..."
"But what?" Zhou Ziqi and Gu Yu asked in unison.
"The patient sustained a significant impact while protecting his companion, resulting in spinal damage. There is a possibility..." The doctor paused, his tone heavy as he continued, "There is a possibility of paralysis."
"What did you say?" Gu Yu felt darkness closing in around her and nearly fainted.
"Doctor, is what you said true? Is my brother really at risk of paralysis?" Zhou Ziqi grasped the doctor's arm, urgency lacing his voice.
The doctor gently patted Zhou Ziqi's hand for reassurance. "We will do our best, but you must also prepare yourselves mentally."
Gu Yu leaned weakly against the wall, tears blurring her vision. She could not accept this cruel reality; Zhou Ziran was injured while trying to save her. If he truly became paralyzed, she would never find peace for the rest of her life.
In the hospital room, Zhou Ziran lay quietly on the bed, his face pale and brows furrowed. Although he remained unconscious, his fingers twitched slightly.
Zhou Ziran slowly opened his eyes, looking around in confusion.
"Brother, how do you feel? Is there anywhere uncomfortable?" Zhou Ziqi asked anxiously.
Zhou Ziran moved his lips, his voice hoarse and weak, "Xiao Yu... where is Xiao Yu?"
"I'm here." Gu Yu stepped forward, holding Zhou Ziran's hand, her voice choked with emotion.
"Xiao Yu..." Zhou Ziran tried to lift his hand but found he had no strength at all.
"Don't move around. The doctor said you need to rest," Gu Yu pressed down on Zhou Ziran's hand, tears falling like pearls from a broken string.
"Xiao Yu, I'm sorry..." Zhou Ziran looked at Gu Yu, his eyes filled with guilt and self-reproach.
"You fool, why are you saying sorry? You saved me; I should be thanking you," Gu Yu shook her head, tears dripping onto the back of Zhou Ziran's hand.
Zhou Ziran wanted to reach out and wipe away Gu Yu's tears but realized he couldn't even manage such a simple action. He closed his eyes in despair, two lines of tears sliding down from the corners of his eyes.
"Brother, don't worry. The doctor said it's just temporary paralysis. As long as you cooperate with the treatment, you'll definitely get better," Zhou Ziqi comforted him, though his own voice trembled slightly.
Zhou Ziran opened his eyes, looking at Zhou Ziqi and then at Gu Yu. He opened his mouth as if wanting to say something but ultimately said nothing.
Zhou Ziran weakly closed his eyes again, tears slowly sliding down the corners of his eyes, leaving faint traces on his pale face. He turned away from Gu Yu and Zhou Ziqi in a posture of avoidance and spoke in a low, hoarse voice, "You both go out; let me be alone for a while."
Zhou Ziqi wanted to say something more but was stopped by Gu Yu. Gu Yu shook her head, signaling for Zhou Ziqi to go out first. She walked to the bedside and gently held Zhou Ziran's hand, her tone soft yet firm. "Ziran, I know you're feeling very sad right now, but you have to pull yourself together. We're all waiting for you to recover."
Zhou Ziran's fingers curled slightly, but he did not respond to Gu Yu's words. He kept his eyes tightly shut, as if trying to seal himself off in a world isolated from everything.
Seeing Zhou Ziran's despondent state filled Gu Yu with pain and worry. She released Zhou Ziran's hand and turned to leave the ward with Zhou Ziqi.
In the corridor by the window, Zhou Ziqi paced anxiously. "Brother, he..."
"He will be okay," Gu Yu interrupted Zhou Ziqi, her tone resolute, though her eyes betrayed deep concern. She looked out the window, her gaze resting on a lush sycamore tree in the distance, lost in thought.
A few days later, Lin Wei arrived at the hospital with a large basket of fruit. Her face was pale, her expression haggard, and her eyes were filled with regret and guilt.
"Ziran, are you okay?" Lin Wei entered the ward and saw Zhou Ziran lying on the bed, his face ashen. Her nose tinged with bitterness as tears nearly fell.
Upon seeing Lin Wei, a flicker of disdain crossed Zhou Ziran's otherwise expressionless face. He turned his head away and coldly said, "What are you doing here?"
Lin Wei bit her lip and placed the fruit basket on the bedside table. Lowering her head, she said, "Ziran, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said those things that day. I didn't mean it; I just..."
"Enough!" Zhou Ziran suddenly turned his head and interrupted Lin Wei, his voice laced with anger. "What’s the point of saying this now? Just leave; I don’t want to see you anymore."
Lin Wei's body trembled slightly as she raised her head to meet Zhou Ziran's icy gaze, her heart filled with bitterness and regret.
